I don’t agree with this statement at all. They’re written, acted, and produced by Koreans. They don’t look…
Yes, but they are forced to abide by american standards because they are funded by Netflix: - Lot of unneeded, vulgar sex scenes. - 45 minutes episodes (instead of 1h) - Usually 8 episodes (instead of 16) - Designed to be multi season from.the beginning. - Cliffhanger at the end to make sure people stay subscribed. - American style filmography. - Widescreen aspect ratio with black bands. - Simplistic plots (e.g., the "good" vs the "bad", superficial characters, lot of high budget action and special effects but lacking plot) - 5 minutes intro + credit at the beginning and ending of every episode (so the episode are actually 40mins long).
The problem is netflix "kdrama" which are basically american tv shows with korean actors. I can't stand them.
But to be honest, viewers are part of the issue with a lot having incredibly low standards.
When I see a show as uninspired as Serenpidity's Embrace being ranked this high, I can understand why production companies don't make much effort to produce high quality plots. If producing garbage is enough to satisfy the mass and generate revenues, why bother....
A lot of exceptional kdramas/movies in different genres also gets lower ratings despite being "true masterpieces…
Yeah, The Wailing is a perfect example. It's one of the best Korean thrillers and is rated only 7.8, while this generic, average romance drama gets an 8.3.
Actually, I don't think it has to do with popularity. You can get an overall 8.3 with 100 or 10,000 different ratings. I think the cause is that romcom watchers have lower standards and will rate anything that is just 'good enough' above 8. Meanwhile, for other genres, people are more cinephile and have higher standards (sometimes a bit too harsh tho).
Can't believe this drama got an 8.3 rating... It's enjoyable, but the plot is so mediocre and uninspired. This deserves a 7 at most imo.
I understand why some people like it: it's a very simplistic and accessible story, making it a light watch with no complex elements, which can be easily understood without much viewer involvement. But still, 8.3 is grossly over rating it and an insult to all the masterpieces drama which often have similar ratings.
If you asked an AI to write a generic romance K-drama, you would pretty much get this one. Everything is so cliché and has been seen thousands of times elsewhere; the screenwriter made zero effort to bring anything original or out of the ordinary.
Meanwhile, exceptional dramas (especially jdrama), including true masterpieces and pieces of art that you still remember years after watching them, are rated between 7 and 8. That's ridiculous.
It makes MDL search system so messed up as pretty average drama like this one will appear higher in the results as others which are really masterpieces. Random people searching for truly great shows will be totally missguided.
The candidates are talented but the show is a bit boring compared to other ones. It is not thrilling and there is no angst or tense moments. It feels flat. I could not finish all the episodes due to the repetitivness and lack of anticipation for next ones.
Objectively this doesn't deserve a 8.7. I mean, just compare this drama with other drama having a stabilized 8.7…
Here are some romance ones I really enjoyed (some are not comedies at all). - Todome No Kiss (2018) - Watashi wa douka shiteiru (2020) - Kimi No Hana ni Naru (2022) - Chugakusei Nikki (2018) - Byakuyako (2006) - 1 litre no namida (2005) - Saiai (2021)
Objectively this doesn't deserve a 8.7. I mean, just compare this drama with other drama having a stabilized 8.7…
There are only 8 episodes. There is not much time to improve... I agree with you that, sadly, a lot of mediocre dramas get good ratings on MDL nowadays. It seems to happen mainly with K and C dramas. For J dramas, on the other hand, it's the contrary. Even the very good ones tend to have not-so-high ratings on MDL. I guess, as J-drama are less accessible to the general public, their watchers are more dedicated and cinephiles, therefore having higher expectations, and rating more harshly.
Objectively this doesn't deserve a 8.7. I mean, just compare this drama with other drama having a stabilized 8.7 rating. It is a total uninspired junk compared to those. This drama is mediocre at best (mediocre does not mean not enjoyable, it means that it is a drama people will forget as soon as it ends airing because it bring nothing remotely innovative or special to the kdrama world...). It is like eating a fast food.
It's quantity over quality nowadays. They're becoming boring too. Almost like if you've seen one you've seen them…
yeah the plot looks like something generic written by ChatGPT. Nothing remotely original or inspired. It's like a fast food meal. It will fill your stomach for a bit but you will forget about it as soon as it ends. I think I'll pass.
For those that watched the first episode, how is this? The plot reads quite mediocre and uninspired. So I am a bit scared of starting this.... Looks like a total waste of time. So many generic drama nowadays (they are usually not that bad but totally forgettable).
Netflix: preparing to be disappointed..... I bet this will be pretty average, super westernized and with a cliffhanger at the end. And of course, lacking the particular feel that makes japanese drama so special.

Do you know if Yoon Chan Young is a part of this drama? He has no character name associated with him.
Is it that terrible...
