So, double helix is definitely higher quality and more fleshed out than these movies. I remember enjoying them at the time, but things make a lot more since in the drama. Overall, the story is basically the same so far, so watching the movies wouldn't really add anything to your perspective. I felt like Lu Feng seemed more of a villain in the movies, but there's some very key moments that haven't aired yet, so it's hard to say how I'll feel by the end. Cheng Yichen was more mature in the movies though which I kind of prefer to the overly childish vibe. I definitely wouldn't watch them until you've finished the drama at this point, but maybe if you have a hole in your heart then, use the movies to fill the gap :)
It's kind of weird to me that they blame Hong Ye and the humans for the killing and war between the races. Because... weren't the demons slaughtering and enslaving the humans first? Like Ao Hen gets protected after killing Hong Ye's people, making him grovel, and almost killing him, but Hong Ye must die and repent for returning the favor and trying to protect his people? Logically, Ao Hen should have also received punishment in that case but ig we're supposed to just forget that. Seems a little biased but ok
It's crazy that nearly half the show and this girl has made no effort to get ml's attackers and help him regain his identity despite promising. Even proposing to him while withholding his identity ☠️

Haha I totally get that! The friendship tag does make me question it, too, and even Japanese audiences are not sure. But if it doesn't turn out to be a romance, I feel like they have really teased the audiences because why talk about 愛 (love) for a bromance? They definitely want us to think it's romance at least! Still, it's not a bad idea to watch knowing it might not be if that will disappoint you. Better safe than sorry! :)

Netflix Japan announcement states 3都市を舞台に二人の青年が歩んだ 10年に渡る魂と愛の物語 (The journey of two young men across three cities. A tale of soul and love spanning ten years). The connotation in Japanese suggests romance to me, but it gives me the feeling of a slow-burn romance with healing as the main focus. My suspicion is that it is not categorized as BL because it does not follow BL themes and the romance will likely be artsy or "understated" as Netflix says? In other words, not a direct/bold romance like most BL. Though I haven't personally seen exact confirmation of romance aside from a 2024 netflix article in English which calls it a "love story" (link below).
