Adding explicit content to visually potray its effectiveness saying it catches the mature/adult audience is just…
You have major hangups about sex and the human body. There was ZERO "explicit" content in this movie. We saw HM and JS make love near the beginning, but everything was indicated, not graphically SHOWN. We saw some boobs twice and a gorgeous male ass at the end. What's your problem?
Why the worry about a few minutes of female breasts and a male butt? The human body is beautiful. HM and JS the characters have great bods and I wish we'd seen more.
3/10 this was just yikes...this movie was too male gazey and treated the female character as nothing but a sexual…
To me this movie is a 9/10. If you think HM was presented soley as a sex object you werent paying attention. All we saw of her were her torso and breasts and she is absolutely beautiful...her dance against the sunset while she was high/drunk/liberated was not about sex. It was about freedom and feeling your space and the world and the answers and just expessing yourself physically. We got a nice, extended butt shot at the end of JS walking back to the truck so I think we can call it even on female/male nudity here.
To anyone confused or looking for answers (after watching the movie) thanks to the ambiguity of the movie, read…
I don't think the facts are anywhere near as clear as you find them to be. There are about 50 other unanswered questions and plot oddities that make things not so crystal clear. I wrote a long spoiler up above full of questions. If you would check them out I'd appreciate it.
Jong Su is DEFINITELY jealous of Ben. That is indisputable. How could he NOT be? Ben has everything JS never will and maybe is even boffing the girl he's in love with.
Okay but am I the only one who thought it wasn't super confusing? Like, I connected the dots quite early, or at…
I don't think the story provides a clear-cut wrap-up at all...there are all kinds of possible explanations for a lot of things. We know what JS ended up concluding but that doesn't mean he is for sure correct. I love this movie, and I'm a lot more comfortable with less than clear endings than I used to be...I don't think what you think is the answer is necessarily the answer. lol
Like its literary forebears and the movie Parasite, this movie is about class resentment and alienation. Hae Mi…
So...did you happen to pick up on a possible murder/disappearance mystery amidst all this social and political commentary? Do you really think the film is THAT black and white in its messages?
Love the slow burn...excellent acting except that I wish Yoo Ah In would cut back on the mouth-breathing. I actually found that distracting after a while as it often made him look intellectually challenged and I began to wonder if his character actually WAS intellectually challenged. But I don't think so.
This is the type of movie I'll find myself mulling over for a few days and will probably come back for a second watch at some point after reading comments and maybe some reviews. I felt like I knew what happened by the end but loose ends and some creepy references here and there beforehand leave me less than a hundred percent sure.
There are a number of questions that seem left hanging which I'll put in the spoiler comment below. If anyone feels they have the answers, I'd love to hear them.

Early in the film, gorgeous Hae Mi said to Jong Su "back in junior high the only thing you ever said to me was ' you are really ugly'." She also mentioned early on that she had had plastic surgery. I immediately thought 'oh god, she's going to set this kid up to kill him or seriously fuck him over in some way for the way he and others treated her in her youth.' So maybe the entire plot line was HM setting JS up to murder Ben with the goal being that he gets caught and goes to prison fo life. We never actually SAW her dead body or any other confirmation that she was killed by Ben or anyone else. Ben's makeup fetish and the jewelry collection seem pretty conclusive...on the other hand...HM could have left that wrist watch there herself and there are other things... Ben never acted the least bit suspicious as far as I could tell, demeanor-wise. He never seemed guilty at all. He said a lot of enigmatic things of course, but that's not proof. Would Ben really agree to meet JS out in the middle of nowhere if he had really killed HM? If he killed her, he would have to know JS was on to him so he'd be on guard and probably carry a weapon to that sort of meeting. "Where's HM?" "I don't know, I thought she was with you." This was the exchange when JS arrived for the final meeting. .I'm not even sure which one said which words? It seems JS fully intended to kill Ben immediately, so why would HE ask where HM is? He believes her dead. Either way, the exchange doesn't make sense to me. Why wouldn't JS take Ben captive and torture him until he confessed what he did to HM? What's up with the disappearing/reappearing well by HM's house and how does that entire trapped in the well story relate to anything else in the plot? Why would HM's family lie about the well? And the man across the street said he didn't think here was one? Why did JS's mom show up out of nowhere after 16 years and then sit looking at her phone while she meets with her son? Just as a plot device to confirm the existence of a possibly non-existent well? That seemed clunky and highly unrealistic. She didn't even seem to really be after $$$. She seemed to not think JS would have any in the first place. Why would JS agree to cover some debt for her after she abandoned him 16 years before and then comes hinting around about money? Just because Ben has the cat doesn't mean it's HM's. How many cats come when their name is called? HM could have left the cat with Ben and made up some reason for him not to tell JS it was hers. He had never actually seen the cat at her place before, all though there were turds in the litter box. Who cleaned up HM's room and why? Why clean the room of someone you murdered and leave her suitcase there which indicates she did NOT pack up and leave? WHY would you keep the cat of someone you murdered?
OK...that's enough questions, but I have more. If anyone would care to answer any of them I'd appreciate it. :)
The external contours of Park Hae Soo's eyes are strikingly distinctive and beautiful. The picture above doesn't really capture that, however. I'm a portrait artist and every time I see him from a three-quarter angle the elongated elegance of those eyes seize my attention. This is made all the more interesting because the rest of his face is so angular, large and monolithic. He's like a sharp-edged stone carving with contrastingly fluid eyes.
What a powerful but melancholy, bittersweet film, especially the ending. I wanted to be joyful for Joon Ho, but too many sad peripheral elements going on and he didn't seem particularly joyful himself. Maybe I'm reading this wrong.
Is the implication he trained himself? Not buyin' it. Anyway. loved many facets of this film and that last water sequence was gorgeous and inspiring. HATE the mom. Jesus, what a selfish bitch. Her fairly calm exterior (mostly) made her even creepier. She REALLY needs to take up a hobby of her own and get lots of therapy. Thank god for the dad.
My negative impression of Korean society continues to deepen. It seems the default mood for most people is anger, resentment, a feeling that everyone else is getting away with something except them and they are damn pissed about it. I have felt this from so many films that I guess that's the way things really are. It certainly explains a lot about the insanity of the K-Pop and Korean entertainment industries in general; both of which are very good at driving their talent to despair, burnout and often suicide. The general public feels is is OWED big-time for the success it has granted to its stars. So it watches for any sign of frailty, then pounces like a hyena.
Weird. I think this is the fastest I've soured on a series...ever. I'm just into the second episode, but now that the quirkiness and humor seems to be gone and it's devolving into a mystery/procedural with lots of awful Korean people standing around being beligerent and verbally abusive to each other, my interest has completely evaporated.
Dropped. I should have known to stick to the gay stuff. :D
Wow. I'm seriously liking this show, and this isn't really my type of thing. Or so I thought. Great acting all-round. Love the tempo, which keeps things moving pretty fast. I've only watched one episode, but can't wait to get back to the rest.
Yoon Kyun Sang is great in his part, but man, I wish they'd quit shoe-horning him into those ultra-small suits two sizes too small, with the high-watered pants and no socks. I get that's the thing right now, but he doesn't have a model's body and the look does him no favors.
The young man accused of the crime is an excellent actor as well. I can't think of anyone who's not doing a nice job. It was a bit weird how it started out so comical, almost slap-stick and then became a super-serious, intense crime thriller. I'm curious to see how much, if any, of the comedic aspect shows up later.
Stfu stop spreading fake shit first of all its a film. None of this shit is real
Are you for real? Shit like this and crap far worse goes down every single day all around the world. Are you on drugs? Awful, selfish, lying pigs are in positions of authority everywhere and much more interested in themselves and what they want than any silly notions of truth, justice and equality.
This story told an awful, unspeakable story, but none of it surprised or surprises me. I'm to the age where I believe that for every one basically "good" person on this earth, there are probably two "bad"ones. I also believe that the truth of what is done to others by those people is far more horrible than we care to grasp. We have to keep kidding ourselves or we'd go nuts.
A few things: I thought it was odd early in the film how the art teacher just stood there in that teachers' work room and watched passively as that one psycho beat the holy hell out of Min Su. What decent person would just watch that and not try to intervene? There was blood flowing, that asshole was kicking him with all his strength, it was easily a criminal assault and the art teacher reacted as though he'd seen it a hundred times before. I don't get that.
I hated what was allowed to happen to ___ ______ toward the end of the film. I don't care what really happened IRL, sometimes a movie needs to NOT suck ALL of your soul from your body.
I think the movie would have been better had the reality of what was happening at the school been allowed to reveal itself more slowly and suspensefully, through the eyes of the art teacher. The way it was scripted though, he kind of showed up for work there and shit hit the fan right away and it was clear what was going down.
This movie is so sad and heartbreaking. After hope this is the saddest movie I’ve watched. How can people be…
There have ALWAYS been people easily this cruel and worse who do horrible things to others. I think we kid ourselves otherwise just to keep making it through the day, otherwise we'd abandon all hope.
i really appreciate your warning. i hate going into things like that blind.
Back again to comment on the comment that was left on your comment on the comment that was so absurdly left in reply to your comment from four years after the fact, I see.
