Yeon has a husband addicted to gambling and a son with autism. Jaegon, a loan shark confronts Yeon who is living her life dedicated to her son, asking her to repay her husband’s loan. Every time her husband chooses the wrong direction in life, Yeon’s life hits the floor too.
The subject of the movie is melodramatic and even though the story could have been lead to the typical tragic plot, this film focuses on the will of life of the characters. Instead of a metaphor towards the dis-formation of society, this movie requires sympathy of each character. Their hopeless and tragic life is expressed with much density.

Title I Have to Buy New Shoes Spoiler
I like the ending very much, it felt suitable and real. Like their own stories. Their time together was perfect for what it was meant to be: a chance encounter during a 3 day trip abroad. In a way they were both lost (figuratively and literally speaking). So it was no wonder they got close and felt attracted to each other, despite the age gap. They were both "dumped", him by his sister, she by her husband, child and cat... he was struggling to not lose himself / to not stray away too much from his artistic calling, she was struggling to rediscover herself, the one she was before her life took a turn for the tragedy.

Everything that happens between them is both realistic and like a dream in the same time, I mean I can see how things would develop in that direction, at that pace, but it also was meant to be a short lived experience from the get go. Let's face it: she had roots and her life there in France, despite being lonely, and he had his life back in Japan, as imperfect as it was... having them end up together would have defeated the purpose of their journey... which i interpreted as a re/discovery one, for both of them. She needed someone to remind her that she was alive and still an attractive woman and he needed a muse to inspire him for his true art...

See the title of the movie itself, to me it felt like a metaphor for "change". New shoes are supposed to take you to new places, new experiences and new beginnings. And that is why the ending, him sending her a new pair of shoes as gift, to me it was a way on his part to encourage her to move on from her pain, to let bygones be bygones.

It also could be interpreted as a token of his true feelings and who knows, a ray of hope that they might get together sometime in the near future?!? She did say at some point that she wanted to go back to Japan and that she always misses Tokyo Tower. She only had Eiffel Tower to lean on in France and she longed for Tokyo Tower... and remeber he says at some point that he would love to be her Eiffel Tower? Of course this is just me taking wild guesses, but that is how I prefer to read between the lines , the dialogues... cause in the end, all they did was tell us a story more in words than in actions, so I feel free to interpret the story the way I wanted it to go LOL

On my quest, stalking Mukai Osamu's movies and dramas...
Another character that was perfect for him. It looks like he plays all sort of artists, not that I complain about that, on the contrary, I love his choices... he was a writer in Yellow Elephant and in My Pretend Girlfriend, a mangaka in Gegege no Nyobo, a fashion designer in Paradise Kiss and here he's a photographer. Somehow these laidback characters are so charming and he does all of them justice.
As for his "partner in crime", her name says it all: Nakayama Miho. It's always a pleasure watching her/
So, about "I Have to Buy New Shows", what a pleasant surprise!!! it was right down my alley... quiet, slow paced, mostly dialogues, beautiful light and music... a man and a woman slowly opening up and taking us on a walk through Paris and through their own life stories. For some people this might be boring, but for me it was lovely, I had a smile on my face the whole time. Definitely a feel good movie!
Not to mention that I am a big fan (both in real life and in movies) of chance encounters, going with the flow, talking to and getting to know perfect strangers... I've met extraordinary people like this, over the years, so, whenever I see movies about such stories I get all excited, like it were me experiencing that "discovery adventure"...
