I was disappointed at this. I had hoped his character would be more complex or at least somewhat conflicted. After all he is presented as someone quite sophisticated and highly educated in Chinese literature (the caligraphy, the 3Kingdoms lore etc). But nope, he turned out to be just an immoral Chinese dude who betrayed his country over a woman. And he expressed disappointment with WYM. She is a rootless orphan but at least she knows how to love her country.

I think he is a Chinese national who met and fell for a Japanese girl while studying in Japan and that is how he got turned.

This is quite fun to watch.

I don't care about MDL ratings at all. I usually pick dramas based on the original IP/good scriptwriters, directors and actors who pick good scripts. I don't think FB is as good as RT but its still really good if you like black comedy like Fargo and it is also totally under rated here.

But he is not Japanese right? He just fell in love with a Japanese woman.

It wasn't the Sparrow like ending I had hoped for but it is still very good, one of the best spy dramas in a long while. Hope you enjoy!

Well they kind of tried to head fake us that Cheng Yi is Kunwu but it didn't work. It could have been better but it was still pretty good. Just no twist and the director hyped up the ending more than it turned out to be.

Ah ok I saw on the Chinese internet that it is not Xue Yue. It is Commander Duan who is a fictional character.

It also didn't help that the screenwriter and actors purposefully outright lied. This is not the first time the production team have tricked us. Note to self not to read Weibo/Chinese sites. The thing is, people who watch it after its done airing may find the answer obvious bc they didn't chase down every false lead the production peppered us with.

The guy at the end is Xue Yue or the Commander. He successfully defended Changsha against the Japanese 4 times from 1939-1944. The ending implies he was really a CPC spy, which of course the Taiwanese will not like and I don't believe is borne out by the facts of history.

So they are implying General Xue Yue who refused to abandon Changsha and successfully defended the city was a CPC member. But I believe in history, he ended up in Taiwan with Chiang Kai-shek.

It was a good ending. Bravo!
