So the materialism and shallowness is a hard core stereotype of Shanghainese people. I guess Wong Kar-Wai is portraying them in a brutally honest manner but it makes all of the characters very difficult to like.
Try Young Blood. I didn't like Zhang Xincheng in Go Ahead either but he is alright in YB and its an ensemble cast anyway so its not just about him.

I also dropped Douluo Continent - that bunny actress I just could not watch. Wang Juan also wrote Young Blood and Young Blood 2 if you haven't watched those.
I am at Ep 3 or 4 of Blossoms Shanghai. I am just watching with my friend who travels a lot so I have to wait for her to come back to continue. I love Hu Ge but I don't like the show. So far all I see is gloating over shallow Shanghainese values. Like who gives a sh*t which restaurant he eats at!🤦🏻♀️

I really don't like Gao Weiguang's acting so I am glad they didn't cast him but Liu Xueyi would definitely have worked as well. I do think there is something about LGX grumpiness that appeals to me a lot and I needed PA closure...

The production teams change around quite a bit and budget also has a lot to do with production quality. I think maybe only Daylight Entertainment (Nirvana in Fire) puts out consistently good dramas even though they are not all in genres I like. Wang Juan (Joy of Life) is the only screenwriter who consistently does a good job but he takes his time so best case you see one of his scripts adapted each year. Most of the better directors in China today are the old HK TVB directors. Sadly they don't really make HK dramas or movies anymore bc the mainland market is just so much bigger. There are lots of good directors around but unfortunately China is an idol actor market whereas HK was not so much. That is changing though bc the Chinese govt really doesn't like this k-drama influenced idol obsession and has really tried to discourage it as much as possible. So more good quality dramas are getting made these days. Not all of them are subtitled though.
13 Years of Dust was based on a novel that did quite well so they had good material to work with as a starting point. And this Director is very good but he tends to muck up scripts - notably The Rise of the Phoenixes. He did a good job with this one though.
I think my favourite bit was cluck cluck and lady Jin, while I think as a novel, cluck cluck bit kinda bored me…

In any case the drama’s big hook was always to reunite him with ZLY. So I don’t think anyone else was ever even considered. Mofang role was not well played and the character was just sad. I did get totally side tracked by the side stories and almost went with something like that for my title.

They offloaded all the angst on the side stories. I bawled at Dong Jie/Lady Yun's story the most bc it reminded me of her iconic performance in Butterfly Lovers. Liu YI and Feng Lai were so sad as well. I am thinking about making a video about Xiao He/Ye Shi.
