I envy you. My dad died several years ago. We used to watch old movies together. 🥲

Thanks for this - I may watch at least part of it with my dad next time I see him for nostalgic reasons.
It’s not long though it did drag in the middle. Maybe it was the beginning of the trope of forgetting to use the woman a title was named after?

If your dad likes wuxia this would be a fun one to see. So many of these old films didn’t survive to the present time. It’s a nice bit of history.

I’m surprised you could make sense of this review. I wrote this in a hurry last night right before falling asleep. Ugh. Found numerous typos and mistakes. 😆

These two were amazing together. Their body language spoke volumes. The question I have is did they finally consummate their love offscreen right before he left and was that his child?

Zhang Yi Mou is one of my favorite directors. I suspect there were too many cooks in the kitchen on this flick. I hope you are able to find it inexpensively on Prime in your region. ^^

I rented it on Prime. If you enjoyed the part you watched you might like how they wrapped it up. I found it to be an average fish out of water and now the fish has to help fight aliens movie. 😄

I was thinking the same, where is the whole octopus?! xD
Seriously, if there is going to be a giant monster we need to see it. All of it, not just the impossibly long tentacles 🐙

Just completed the 1st episode and your review captured the essence of my experiece so far. What a beautiful review.
Thank you. 😊 It may be a little too perfect world but I found it relaxing, especially after watching a couple of very intense titles recently.

What an interesting article. Thank you! Older people have all sorts of personalities and traits just like younger people. Are still viable and vital. It’s always nice when they are portrayed positively and when they get a little romance of their own! 😀

You know, you can't compare personalised ratings with the general rating of the dramas. The gerenal rating of dramas…
I have rated many dramas below a 7 and I’m not new either.

I’ll deal with it philosophically instead of statistically-If everything is great nothing is.

I was thinking of watching this but now I am thinking nope. Tyvm.
The second half was entertaining. Really helps if you’ve seen the first one because there is no help in identifying characters otherwise.

You are very kind, thank you. 🥰

I ran across this movie on Prime recently and was intrigued. I was ready for a slower, artistic movie and this was just the ticket.

At first I thought the wanderer was what you are talking about and that could still be what the director was going for. I searched a bunch of sites trying to see if anyone knew for sure, but couldn't find anything. The drawing of Sora was what really sold it for me, a picture of his granddaughter shown only through the love of a grandfather. And if felt like she had an "aha!" moment when she saw it. When he looked at the house as he left it felt like he knew they were going to be okay. I might be reading too much into it. I suppose it's up to the viewer to ascribe meaning to him.

The treatment of the recruited student scholars sounded like it was brutal.
:(

This was one of my favorites from the Nippon Connection 2021 and I've been meaning to write a review for this…
I enjoyed it as well. The scene at the end of the birthday party graded it slightly down for me.

I think the wanderer was her grandfather not only because of his response to reading the diary, but also the drawing of Sora and smacking the dad upside the head as he left. When Sora gave him the honorary gun salute he disappeared. I think she knew it was him after seeing the drawing.

I loved the monochromatic look along with the score. It gave it more of a magical feel to it which juxtaposed with the very realistic father daughter relationship was special. This one was very hard for me to rate. I thought it was well made, but certain elements gave me pause. May still bump it up in the near future when I've had time to properly reflect on it. I'm happy to have someone to talk about it too, not many people have watched it. Thank you for the flower. ^^

If you'd seen him drinking out of the oil container at the refinery headfirst, maybe he had tippled a little too much! XD
