Hit all the points but leaves something lacking

Such a highly anticipated drama with a great cast but leaves you feeling a little disappointed. But it could be that the drama was too hyped that it sets expectations too high as well.

After three years of wait, this drama finally aired! Love the cast, Yang Zi and Xiao Zhan. They act out the characters really well and the details are done really well. Although I prefer them in Xianxia dramas, they still did a great job with all the emotional scenes here. Not to mention how handsome Xiao Zhan is. There are those moments every episode where Gu Wei would smile in a way that just melts your heart and you HAD to go back just to relive the moment. However, personally, I found that the storyline lacks character development. Gu Wei and Gu Xiao had some development but the rest didn't feel like they had any. I feel that the characters had so many moments where character development could be showcased but was just glossed over :( The female characters frustrated me from point to point with their attitude and just their point of view. The side characters had so much screentime but it didn't feel like they did much to the show nor did they shine as well.

The first 15+ episodes were great. The storyline was strong. The characters were charismatic and very interesting to watch. The chemistry between the leads was so good and the strong family ties were very sweet to watch. However, the storyline thins as it continues and felt very shallow. There wasn't much to look forward to and I found that the pace was too slow or fast at times. The first portion made me really look forward to the next episode while I found myself skipping through the 30+mins long episodes towards the end.

This is a very weird feeling as I really love Xiao Zhan and Yang Zi and their relationship is so cute. At points, you will find yourself giggling as the characters ooze with their love for each other. However, the storyline is rather flat so I don't find it tugging my heartstrings or feeling for the characters. :(

In all, it feels like they ticked all the boxes like great acting and a nice storyline but somehow lacking in a way that gets you hooked. Although it is not the best, I would still recommend it as the relationship is really great and Xiao Zhan and Yang Zi on screen just makes you feel good. Great as an eye-candy, relaxing show but don't get your expectations too high with the hype.
