I watch a few historical C dramas a year....and I do tend to watch earlier ones. I recently watched Empresses in the Palace, Story of Yanxi Palace, and Blossoms in Adversity. I tend to go for historical dramas with smart female leads. They all have that in common. Others like that that I've seen are Love Like the Galaxy, The Double, A Dream of Splendor...these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. One of my favorite Cdramas has been Reset. That's a modern one and I can understand why people might not like some of the repetition, but I just really enjoyed it.

Guys I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm on episode 33 of this drama and I don't get the hype. I mean, almost everyone is so beautiful and I do love to watch beautiful people, but that's apparently not enough for me. I can't even pinpoint what I don't like. I'm thinking I would have been fine if it had been 16-20 episodes. It's literally stubbornness that's keeping me from dropping it. It has such a high rating and it's so beloved, but I'm just not falling into its embrace. I've watched 2 longer dramas while I've put this on hold. Now I just want to finish it for the sake of finishing.

But you mean with all the danger and security he had around, he couldn't even put a couple of guys on Misa and his sister at the funeral???? That was too much of a plot hole for me.

And I dislike how helpless Misa continues to be. Jiwon had the common sense to check on her potential illness herself, to invest her money, and to learn self-defense. Misa was all like I want to take care of myself blah blah blah ...but did nothing to show she actually could.

I read the Webtoon and watched the Kdrama, both of which I loved. I'm on episode 3 of the Japanese version and it's just not giving the same thing.

It seems a little less fleshed out...like people's motivations are not convincing. I also don't like that she doesn't display enough disgust at the two people who killed her. In the K version, you can tell at every point she hasn't forgotten for one minute just what they did. In this version, she seems too complacent. It didn't make sense how she didn't try to even break up with him when she first came back. In the K version, she has enough proof that things are going to happen anyways, plus she saw how unhinged he would be if she just straight tried to break up. I didn't like her makeover, I thought she looked better before. Her after-makeover fashion also left something to be desired. In addition, the K version was also somewhat comic and more dramatic. This one seems more like just drama....which I guess is just a preference thing.

But to qualify all of this, I'm only on the 3rd episode, but I'll see how I feel after watching more. And I'm sure there's differences just based on the culture difference as well

I just told myself that she had that ability/cunning the whole time but her strong belief in the principles her father instilled in her kept those tendencies at bay. When she lost that, she lost the barrier. However, I don't disagree that a lot was still unrealistic. Same with stuff Yingluo could accomplish too. Some of it was super unrealistic, but since I wanted her to win, I didn't question too much 😅

Omg I hate when they dumb down a smart female lead out of the blue...even a villain. Yeah, they did it once or twice with Yingluo, but generally, she stayed on the up, so I was fine with it

I think I enjoyed Yanxi a little more than Empresses, but you're suggesting Nirvana in Fire as better than all? Well that's an exciting prospect. Though these things are pretty subjective. I remember I was excited to watch The Untamed because EVERYBODY was raving about it. 7 episodes in, I couldn't get into it. It wasn't bad or anything, it just didn't capture my attention like I expected

I just finished both Empresses in the Palace and Story of Yanxi Palace. How does this compare?

I read a couple of reviews on this drama and went in with low expectations. But I was pleasantly surprised and binged the first 4 episodes in one night. Yes, it was a little cliche, but I still enjoyed it. I didn't understand why I saw negative reviews. It was a solid 8.5 for me until somewhere past the halfway point. Then I understood. I've been in a smart female lead era, and this pretty much goes against that. Plus using the most cliche of cliches??????? Yeah, I'll rate it an 8 only because it had the ability to take me to my binging days in the beginning.

I watched this drama 2 years ago and remember thinking it was boring when I first started watching it. Boy was I wrong. Excited to rewatch. Probably next year so I can forget some more stuff lol

Have any idea where to watch it with Eng subs?

I haven't watched it since it aired in 2015. Can't believe it's almost 10 years ago now. I remember loving it, but needing an episode or two to get into it. Thinking of rewatching, but worried my 10-year older self won't like it as much

When I read the webtoon, I felt the same. Especially since they didn't reveal that he also time traveled until much later. He was really giving intense/stalker vibes

I'm on episode 3 and I just can't get into it. It feels like I've seen every scene/situation before. Like you said, it doesn't feel special or new

I saw it on Dramacool with proper subs. I'd watched the first 30 mins with weird subs on some site at first. But decided to keep looking
