ep 18 was seriously so rage-bait, from the plot, to the editing & also to some of the comments i'm seeing…
Are people seriously using the SA incident to justify why she should not drink? A - she wasn’t drunk when the scumbag harrased her B - it was over 2 years ago so she’s likely moved on from it now. (2 years = If they have been dating for 4 years, then it’s her 5th year in Beijing. Donny’s scenes were from her 3rd year if I am not mistaken)
C- Luke was at the event so she obviously knew he would be there/ felt safe enough to cut loose (even Luke has told her previously she can drink when she’s with him)
Clingy relationship- the events with the obsessed ex + the misunderstanding in ep 5 when he came to return her…
TBH I cannot recall now. He did talk about this with his friend (or rather the friend said that he doesn’t like clingy relationshps) but I can’t recall if Luke explicitly told this to Tao.
The scenes i mentioned were before Tao understood how Luke reacts so I can see why she would think heha be the type who’d hate having a clingy girlfriend.
Idk exactly when it happened, but somewhere along the way, this show became a case study for me in just how much…
The novel actually has a note saying that the novel should not be considered as a romance. It’s supposed to be in a documentary style covering how life unfolds (in Tao’s POV).

He’s not a predator. In ep 5, their morning after scene, Tao did not look confused/ lost so she knew exactly what she did the previous night and it was with her consent. And from Luke’s side he kept asking her if she was sober/ at that point she did not look intoxicated. His mistake was initiating their next interaction in the worst way possible unintentionally.
That being said, I agree that the belittling really should stop. Saying rude things/ being tactless every time should not be brushed off as “a quirk”/ “poor Luke, he can’t help himself”/ “he’s just being honest”. He shouldn’t be infantilized either to the point where he needs Tao to tell him off every time he crosses the line.
Tao too should speak more openly since she knows how Luke is like/ Luke has explicitly told her he hates being left out. Continuing the same old habits won’t help anybody. It’s also probably why most are rooting for them to break up.
Flora was bothered by Zang Yao because of stories he had about them from lumi plus the flowers nothing about them…
Somebody below pointed out that Luke had no reservations hugging his childhood friend- even after she made her intentions explicitly clear/ Tao's insecurities about her were clear.
Also if the hug really bothered him that much, he could have asked Tao how her meeting with her ex went in more detail instead of concorting a fake date of his own 🙈

They had an amicable break up as they wanted different things. You don't stick to a relationship just because he is nice. That's just the basic thing you'd expect from anyone who claims to care about you.
I'm not saying that Luke has never complimented her but he does have a habit of unintentionally saying the worst thing to her. In fact, he only started to be more careful with his words after she asked him to be more nice to her.

Luke being jealous isn't new. He always hated the flatmate. As for the ex, he got insecure after her introduction/ it was clear the ex was still smitten. Idk if he'd remember their conversation from yr 1, but he already knows that Tao doesn't hate her ex so i guess it makes sense why he'd get jealous unfortunately🙈

While I'm glad Luke didn't say those hurtful things at the end of ep 18 solely out of jealousy, his bluntness is killing me as well as them🥲

In a sad way, it's his rough way of telling her she deserves better. Tao on the other hand might take it as she is not worth the effort. The voiceover towards the end of the episode was by future Tao right?

it's not like she joined a random app to date. A few episodes ago they showed the thought process behind the account. Both Sun YZN and Tao joined because Sun Yu was desperate. The accounts meant nothing else to them.
She explained it to Luke but he let his jealousy get the better of him even after that. He was already unhappy because she'd rather choose the investment event than be with him. Finding out it was a dating event just made him even worse.
While we don't know how Tao would react if Luke joined the app (and clearly explain later at least that it's to support his friend), logically he should get the same pass if he doesn't use the app for any other reason than support his friend's venture.

Hi sorry about that. Hope you are feeling more rested :) That’s definitely true. Emotions can’t always be clear cut and controllable. They both have their reasons. That’s what I love about TES since we get so many complex POVs.
In a way I guess why some viewers’ opinions can get a bit polarizing depending on the scenario is because they could relate to certain characters to a certain degree?
Like how you understand Luke’s position, from my end I guess I sometimes can see Tao’s POV a bit more clearly because Luke reminds me of my mum at times.😅 Just like him, she means well and is very protective (too much even at times) but because of how she has reacted 9/10 times in the past, she isn’t somebody I would usually seek for comfort. I know she means well but because of past incidents, I find myself hesitating even with simple things. Once patterns are noticed/ too many hurtful words have been said, it becomes an unconscious habit you can’t break. So I guess I might be projecting on Tao a bit too much because I know just like her, I too should be speak more without assuming the worst always. I guess it’s just hard.🙈
I am curious to see how the drama will tackle Tao’s lack of communication since this is just as important as Luke growth. Hope they don’t rush it!

Yes that's why I said it's understandable why he got mad and yes calling her out at first is understandable but after Tao kept telling she was exhausted, calling out to him, looking physically weak, and with what he knows from the email and the morning she came to see him, he could have softened abit at least for a moment towards the end. Instead of the cold detached tone he used.
In comparison, after her altercation with the corrupt agent, even if he was harsh, towards the end he made sure to check if she was ok. His voice and expressionswere filled with concern and wamth. But in ep 17, throughout he was quite chilling.
We know Luke cares about herand Tao probably knows too, but at that moment, it just felt extra harsh at the time since you know he could do better.
