That would be understandable if he was just arrogant, but he's been described as NARCISSISTIC, which is a much stronger word. A narcissistic person is like a magnet. If the other person were to move away, he or she would just increases their field of force, and not actually change or take any effort to improve themselves so that the other person would want to come closer to them.
Though I would be happy if it would be the way you said it.
