lmao I agree with everything you said. Honestly I was just being petty because I didn't appreciate the comparison to eternal love. I love Eternal Love but not a huge fan of ELOD.
Had really high hopes for this drama because I love the two main leads and their chemistry together is everything (see The Eternal Love). However, it was so disappointing. After the major reveal the show starts dragging. The last 10 episodes were so poorly written after I was done I was so upset that I invested time to even watch it. Would not recommend.

Eternal love and Eternal love of Dream are both amazing dramas. Both shows deserve all the recognition they receive. In my opinion this one cannot hold a candle to those two but i'm glad you enjoyed it and found the story to be great!
I know I'm in the minority but this drama was so underwhelming. Watched it because of all the hype and comments here but was extremely disappointed. It's an alright drama to pass the time I guess...but I was bored at times with some of the side stories that I found unnecessary. If you're going to watch this lower your expectations, please!
I really can't explain to yall how amazing this show is... I have no words...none except wow...probably the best drama I've watched all year and I've watched a lot of good ones this year...the acting OUTSTANDING...every single person held their own...storyline...A Freaking mazing....a lot of people were complaining about the pacing but it was so well done... I enjoyed every single moment of this masterpiece. WATCH IT!...It'll be worth it trust me!
Hi! Have you watched many wuxia? I've just watched this for the second time and have seen Eternal Love and Love…
I think most wuxia at some point has a story line where they go to live on earth as part of a trial or first life kinda thing. I saw it in almost, if not all the ones I watched. If you haven't already watched The Eternal Love (its completely different from Eternal Love just the names are slightly similar) I would highly recommend, I consider it wuxia. Ashes of Love is a good one as well (Recently started it) and Eternal love of Dream (sequel to eternal love).
First things first..That was one of the most disappointing endings ever (yes it has a happy ending for the main leads) but overall the ending just left me feeling mad at and disappointed.
I would still however recommend this drama. At first, I was a little thrown by how it looked given its age but after a while, I got into it and I wasn't even noticing it anymore.
RANDOM THINGS I ENJOYED (Contains Spoilers)
Love how they explored the fickle nature of men during that period...like they outright spoke about how he fell out of love with the empress because she was old and then Xiangf did the same thing the empress did in her younger day to catch his attention and he became enamored with her...
Usually in harem dramas you see how things in the harem ultimately affect the imperial court but this one is the opposite...you get to see how things on the imperial court affect the harem.
It was also really refreshing to see the contrast between Hareem life as a concubine (Xiang) and the life of a somewhat ordinary woman (Xin yu)...they even directly speak to the fact that Xiang is caged and can go few places whereas female lead is free and can come and go as she pleases...you really get to see how claustrophobic harem life is. When you're watching Harem dramas you see from the perspective of the concubines...even though you're aware that they're restricted to basically 3 places all of which are in the harem, you never think about how truly confining that is until you watch shows like this one...
Also not alot of scheming in comparison to the other harem dramas...
Ps. I also feel like they never really told us why wanted to get close to the palace..they never explicitly said what her goal was!
Amazing drama...if you're wondering whether to watch it or not WATCH IT!!! The ending could have definitely been better. It honestly felt like the story wasn't really about what it was suppose to be about...Don't get me wrong..I loved it but given that the storyline that we assumed was the main storyline was literally wrapped up in like half of an episode...That was disappointing AF!...Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it!
RANDOM STUFF THAT I ENJOYED My favorite scenery was the mountains in the first story arch...the place where the upper class lived was so gorgeous...I just fell in love with how calming and beautiful it was...The houses made me want to go on vacation there.
My favourite story arc was the second one...Deep Water. That one had me laughing so much. I really enjoyed it! The other story arcs were good too but Deep Water will forever hold a special place in my heart. I absolutely loved the prime minister, his schemes were the best..hands down my favourite villains.
I loved this drama definitely watch it if you're scrolling through the comments looking for a reason to start it....
I tried rewatching it and I noticed the FL was really skinny (yes I know Asian actresses usually are) but she was really thin...I was so worried, every time she came on the screen I was worried...I was just wondering if she's okay the entire time.
I would definitely recommend this drama to pass the time. Its very fun and light and the lead actress really did a great job..I loved her smile, every time she smiled I found myself smiling too. Howeverrrr the last few episodes felt rushed and the ending was very cliche...which was extremely disappointing.
***SPOILER BELOW***
I'm sick and tired of that whole troupe in kdramas...somebody leaving to go abroad (either for "the good" of the relationship or simply just to "find themselves" (and other selfless reasons) and then coming back in the final episode..I was really hoping they'd weather the storm together and come out stronger for it!
First of all, fair warning, this drama is highly addictive. I was thinking about it all the time and couldn't get anything done. So I beg you to watch this in your free time otherwise it will ruin your life...If you're scrolling through these comments looking for a reason to watch this drama...this is it!!!
Everyone in the comments and review said everything that can be said about this drama..It was EXCELLENT!...However, I will say out of all the harem drama I've watched this is one of the few, where the emperor claimed to love the FL and was as consistent as an emperor can actually be (if you're a fan of historical harem dramas you'll understand what I mean). I watched Ruyi, where the emperor was supposed to be so in love with her but even in the first few episodes that wasn't shown by his actions (IMO) but in this drama, although the emperor is emperor and does what emperors will do (the most) he still favored the FL above all the other concubines and his actions portrayed that (to an extent) so that was a plus for me.
Honestly. I'm happy I finished this so I can finally focus on my work..this drama had me so bad...I'M FREEEE!
I felt this in my soul...I cant deal with the emperor..He tells Ruyi he loves her and then glances at another…
I ended up skipping to the last few episodes and i'm glad I did. The fact that he choose that girl over her and told her the girl was better than her...if I had watched everything I probably would have been in a worse place. She was the only one who genuinely loved him and when he found out the truth he couldn't even bring himself to apologize...The ending was satisfying to me...I didn't find it sad. He deserved nothing less than to live with his bad decisions.
Ps. Can you recommend any other Harmen themed historical dramas?
This drama was the most hilarious Asian drama I've ever watched. I was literally laughing each episode. And the acting was...wow...the female lead was outstanding...I loved her acting and the male lead held his own as well. The whole role reversal was just refreshing...if you're a fan of Asian dramas you'll definitely notice familiar troupes but like in reverse and its just perfection *Chef's kiss* If you're looking for a reason to watch this drama...this is it. It has romance and comedy...Just watch it! I would love to have a part 2 with them in the modern world!
WATCH IT!...It'll be worth it trust me!
