A Thriller That Forgot to Thrill

By the time JoongDunk reached their fourth series together — Star & Sky, Hidden Agenda, The Heart Killers, and now Dare You to Death — it was clear they’re one of GMMTV’s safest bets. Loyal fandom? Locked in. Built-in hype? Guaranteed. But star power and fan devotion can’t replace tight writing, tonal discipline, and convincing performances — especially in a genre that demands it.

On paper, Dare You To Death sounds promising. A university student, Puifai, dies under suspicious circumstances after a party. A seemingly close-knit friend group begins receiving ominous truth-or-dare notes. Enter rival detectives Kamin (Dunk Natachai), the sharp but restrained newcomer, and Jade (Joong Archen), the instinct-driven senior officer. Forced to work together, they navigate secrets, revenge, and escalating deaths — with a slow-burn romance simmering beneath the surface.

It should have worked.

The core concept — a fractured friend group hiding horrific secrets — is genuinely compelling. Puifai’s psychological unraveling and the moral corruption within the group had real dramatic weight. For moments, especially in the latter half of the finale, the series hints at something darker and smarter. Those glimpses are frustrating because they show potential.

The problem is consistency.

Tonally, the series never commits. It swings between grisly psychological manipulation and soft-focus romantic comedy. Just as tension begins to build, we’re pulled into flirtation, beach dates, or extended lovey-dovey exchanges that stall the momentum. The romance isn’t inherently the issue — it’s the placement. In a thriller, pacing is everything. Here, urgency evaporates mid-crisis.

The investigative thread is also weak. For a crime drama, deductions are minimal, forensic work feels surface-level, and logic often bends for convenience. Characters make baffling decisions purely to move the plot forward. Suspense relies less on clever unraveling and more on characters behaving unrealistically. When viewers start questioning basic actions instead of the mystery, immersion breaks.

Performance-wise, the supporting cast carries significant weight. Pahn as Puifai delivers the most textured portrayal, grounding the revenge arc in emotional trauma. Ohm, Chimon, and Sing add credibility and tension where the script allows. They elevate scenes that might otherwise fall flat.

As for JoongDunk, their chemistry remains intact — that’s never been the issue. But chemistry alone doesn’t sustain a thriller. Emotional peaks require range and intensity. Too often, dramatic confrontations lack depth, and quieter moments feel one-note. It’s not that they can’t grow into stronger performers — it’s that this material demands more than what’s currently delivered.

Technically, the production is uneven. Editing choices blunt tension. Music cues overpower dialogue. Injuries appear and disappear as the scene requires. The police portrayal lacks procedural grounding, which undercuts credibility in a genre built on realism.

What makes this frustrating is that the skeleton of a strong series is here. Strip back the tonal confusion. Let the darkness breathe. Focus on psychological horror first, romance second. With sharper writing and firmer directorial control, this could have been a standout.

Instead, it lands as a thriller diluted by fan-service priorities.

If you’re watching primarily for JoongDunk moments, you’ll likely find enjoyment. Treat it as light entertainment, and it plays easier. But if you came expecting a gripping, cohesive crime drama, temper expectations.

I didn’t hate it. I just expected more — from the writing, from the execution, and from a production company capable of much better.

Koshiba Fuka is too pretty to be considered unattractive

I hated the korean drama so much that I quit watching korean dramas for 2 years. But I immediately noticed that the japanese version is straight forward and instead romance is more like a slice of life drama.
The only thing that is funny for me is casting such a cutie as the supposedly unattractive adult version of the FL Koshiba Fuka, a woman so beautiful you can't hide her beauty with curly dry hair and freckles.
I am loving it so far.
Japanese versions of korean tend to be better executed than the original versions.

I love them so much!

Oh the drama! The pain! Yearning! It was a while since I rooted for a couple so much!
I did not read the synopsis or anything beforehand, so I was pleasantly surprised by all of this and binged all 12 episodes. I love tragic pasts and complex characters, so I quickly became addicted and couldn't wait to see it all play out.
I loved how ML tried to fully understand FL, got to know her inside and out and accepted her wholeheartedly - maybe because I would want that for myself. It's that unconditional love fantasy that always has me mesmerized.
The second male lead wasn't for me. I didn't feel bad for him at the end at all, maybe because of how he treated the FL at the start, mocking her without any real reason. He wasn't too annoying after that though.
I'm weak when it comes to characters with trauma and them finding someone, who soothes their pain. More of these, please!
And finally, we got more than just one, barely there kiss! I loved how they gazed at each other lovingly at the end and the scene in the dark - them kissing and "dancing" and how we could her their breathing, because they got together AT LAST.
It was like a reward.

A weak BL inside a horribly boring story

Oh by Thor's beard. My precious time, where did it go? Where to begin? I try to start to think about something good first. Give me a minute. Joong and Dunk are good looking guys.

That's it. Everything else was horrible. See I love drama, and as Agatha Christie fan I love a good murder story too. But this wasn't it. I felt this weird thing since the middle half that one moment we get a gruesome murder then a BL scene like these must have been the dumbest detectives I have seen. Or police, since... I mean there is a serial killer on the loose, and the police department sents TWO officers for the entire continually escalating situation? Would not the famous father of one of the potential victims (his son) not at least press for more police, or bringing his son out the country? I mean, if I were part of targeted group I'd flee the country like yesterday?

And instead everyone is waiting in the city, doing their same known routines a FEW of them guarded by ONE policeman instead of taking them into protective custody or something??? And sorry, between all the horror Joong and Dunk making out felt so unbeliebaly MISPLACED. Was is not clear the murderer was after everyone? Why did people even think, if they decide (Dare) they would not end up being killed? Sorry, all of these were psychos of some level, and unlike Death on the Nile or any Whodunnit crime this was NOT interesting. It was BORING. I care for none of the victims, nor were the villains in any way, shape or form interesting. It was evil what the people being killed did, yeah, but if one decides to go on such a revenge path with such methods I assume the murderer couple was mentally profoundly deranged before that.

And what did Kamin and Jade achieve? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. It was like every single decision was unreasonable, pointless and amateurish beyond imagination. To alterate a famous movie quote:

What I've just watched is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever seen. At no point this rambling, incoherent story ever come close to anything that could be considered as rational. Following this series I am now dumber just for having watched to it. I award them no points, and may God have mercy on their soul.

Beautiful Trash

I went into this series with high expectations. I'm a fan of buddy cop series, so the idea of that setting as a BL was intriguing to me. I thought the pilot looked amazing, the actual trailer for the series definitely hooked my interest, and I'm fond of both JoongDunk and AouBoom.

Visually the show clearly had a decent budget, the music was good, and it definitely had some scenes and moments that were very well done. For example, the cage fight was a really great scene. Unfortunately the sloppy direction and poor editing resulted in a series that was overall far too often nonsensical in tone and sometimes jarring when rapidly switching from a life or death situation to oh let's throw the BL fans a bone with a sweet moment. Jade and Kamin come across as largely incompetent at their jobs, and the entire handling of what should have been a very serious investigation into serial murder was ludicrous. Even putting that aside, the complete lack of trust between Jade and Jay meant that things that should have been resolved and people who could have been protected all got fucked because... what... friends don't dob friends in to the police?!

The directing/editing team seem to have been on a mission to cut out as much physical intimacy as they possibly could without being publically bashed for being homophobic... which is an odd choice for a BL. I might have been able to forgive that if they had actually delivered on a cohesive and compelling plot overall... but they didn't manage to do that either.

I basically only finished watching this because I felt sad for the actors, who all seemed to have done the best they could with what they were given.

A True Masterpiece I Didn’t See Coming

I started watching Mouse without knowing much about it. I just saw some very good reviews and decided to give it a try. I went in completely blank - no big expectations, no spoilers, nothing. And wow... I was not prepared for how brilliant this series would be. First of all, the acting. I didn't really know the two main actors before - Lee Seung-gi and Lee Hee-joon - but they absolutely blew me away. The level of acting is just insane. So layered, so emotional, so convincing. They don't just play their roles - they become them. I honestly want to watch more of their work now because this was just masterful. And the supporting cast? Also amazing. Every single role feels important and well acted. No weak performances. Everyone adds something to the story. But what really makes this series a masterpiece is the writing. The story is so cleverly constructed. There are twists that truly shock you, but they never feel cheap. Everything connects. Every detail matters. It's one of those stories where you keep thinking about it even after the episode ends. I have honestly never seen something like this before. The directing is brilliant. The pacing, the way scenes are built up, the tension - it's all done so carefully. And the editing? Absolutely top level. The way they switch perspectives and reveal information is so smart. It keeps you guessing the entire time. The music choice is also perfect. It really completes the atmosphere. It doesn't overpower the scenes, but it adds exactly the right emotion at the right moment. I have to admit, after the first episode I thought it might be too dark for me. It felt very heavy and intense, and I wasn't sure if I could handle it. But I decided to keep watching, and I'm so glad I did. Yes, it's dark at times - very dark - but it's never just dark for shock value. It serves the story. And the story is so powerful and impressive that it's absolutely worth it. For me, this isn't just a good series. It's a masterpiece. One of the best Korean dramas I've ever seen. If you're ready for something intense, intelligent, and unforgettable - this is it.

Didn’t dissapoint

my expectations were very high when I first saw the trailer and I’m glad to say that my expectations haven’t lowered too much after actually watching it. the acting is incredible (which was lowkey expected out of a stacked cast like this lol), visually I would say it isn’t too crazy and the story is pretty solid. some side notes tho: I really disliked Cha I Yeon’s character at the beginning and I saw many others also felt the same, after a while I just lowkey disregarded her…? Besides that I lowkey felt tension between Jeong Su and Director Ahn 🤭 . Final thoughts: very solid show I would highly recommend this and yeah that’s lowkey it 😭

Human mysteries, revenge, and a romance that blossoms in the shadows.

It's a drama that captivates with its atmosphere, its cases, and, of course, its lead actress. Bai Lu, as always, is spectacular. Her beauty is undeniable, but what truly stands out is her acting evolution: she has noticeably improved in her fight scenes, executing them with a fluidity and conviction that elevates every action sequence.

The plot is structured around revenge and solving mysteries, and therein lies one of its greatest strengths. The cases presented are interesting and varied, but what makes them special are their profoundly human motivations. These are not gratuitous murders or crimes of abstract evil; behind each one lie injustices, pain, and people cornered by a corrupt system. The drama doesn't justify murder, but it places you face to face with characters whose motivations you can't judge lightly because you understand the source of their desperation. This moral complexity enriches each case and elevates the plot above a simple whodunit.

Bai Lu's character, Li Peiyi, is consumed by revenge until the very end, and the drama wisely avoids betraying that essence. There are no forced redemptions or miraculous pardons; her thirst for justice is the driving force behind her, and the script respects this from beginning to end. I appreciated how they handled her evolution without diluting her determination, keeping her true to herself even when love comes knocking.

Speaking of love, the main couple is cute and works within the confines of the plot. There aren't many romantic moments because the focus is on mystery and revenge, but when they do occur, they are tender and well-integrated. However, I must be honest: I struggled to connect with Wang Xingye's character (Xiao Huai Jin). His passive and submissive attitude contrasted sharply with other roles the actor has played, which I'm used to, and with Li Peiyi's overwhelming personality. While I understand it was part of the character, at times it felt unbalanced. A firmer counterpoint might have generated a more electrifying dynamic.

The final chapters feature a separation that, while predictable within the genre's conventions, is successfully resolved. The overall ending is satisfying: the couple ends up together, Li Peiyi's revenge is somewhat fulfilled, and there's a sense of emotional closure. However, some loose ends remain, such as the crown prince's involvement or certain decisions by the emperor that are left unresolved. These don't completely ruin the experience, but they do leave the feeling that the story isn't entirely concluded.

It's a solid, entertaining, and visually appealing drama. Its cases, driven by human motivations, the consistency of Li Peiyi's character, and Bai Lu's improved acting in action are its strongest points. The romance, though secondary and somewhat unbalanced due to the male lead's passivity, is adequate without overshadowing the main plot. A bittersweet but satisfying ending to a story that skillfully balances mystery, revenge, and heart.

What a huge Roller Coaster

At first, I wanted to drop this series. The plot wasn’t bad but a little uncomfortable for me. I had this uneasy sensation towards it. After thinking about it, I decided to continue watching because it was actually interesting and I saw a spoiler video of a nice scene. I believe I made the right choice. Nothing marvellous, but the right combination of love and psychic elements, definitely my cup of tea. The story is not predictable and, at least for me, there is a critical plot twist. So fascinating.
I’m a bit unsure about the ending. I believe it’s a little rushed? Da On needed some alone time, of course, so going abroad was the right choice but I would have appreciate one or two more scenes after it.
Lastly, I have questions:
- What happened to Da On’s father? We see him only one time, then he disappears.
- How could Da On present the project after what happened and with the think of his loved one in the hospital? He wins. This is unreal.

Let’s talk about the characters.
Sin Jae Min is, undoubtedly, my favourite character here. I love how his personality is portraited and the way his mind works is absolutely interesting. The actor (Kim Ho Young) is hot and fabulous at his job. His eyes are famished, crazy and pass down the right feelings and energy (for eleven years). Also, I’m addicted to his poker face. He is surely ill.
Kim Su Hyeon is no less interesting. His behaviour, violent and ambiguous, seems to come from his dysfunctional family dynamics. This poor guy doesn’t know how to clearly and healthily get or ask for what he wants. Again, the actor (Cha Jung Woo) is so very hot and so great at his job. A fierce gaze and very insisting manners: I feel so sorry for him (he’s a little dumb).
Jung Da On is trapped in an awful situation. Empathizing with him, you feel powerless. I have to say something about Kim Jun Seo’s performance though. He isn’t bad. He’s cute and ‘in distress’ but I didn’t appreciate his crying scene (in the last episode if I’m correct).
Ju Seong Hyeon apparently is here only to save Da On from the clutches of the ‘childhood friends’ duo. He’s the usual green forest. Evergreen, obviously. At first, I didn’t like him, but then I changed my mind because the other two are rotten, and so is the environment they nurture. The actor’s performance (Cha Sun Hyung) is good. Sweet and placid eyes, calm attitude and soft look.

Nothing much to say about the music. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a main theme and, for me, this is not nice. However, the direction seems good, as well as the lightning and the sounds effect. The setting is classic: office, home, outside bars.

I’m not going to watch this series again but I’ll recommend it to you. Especially if you are into psychological contents.

A bit convoluted and sometimes confusing

After watching this series i wish they just made the Do Ra-Mi movie

First the casting, its mostly ok. Though i think ML was a miscast, he just feels too old. Especially with his mom's actress being only 7 years older than him, but i guess thats a too young casting there.

The side romance was completely unnecessary and honestly i disliked the second FL, i think its mainly the way her character was handled and presented because done differently she could have been fun. Like i have no idea what was supposed to make the manager dude like her.
The main story was sometimes nice but sometimes very confusing and not in a way that feels intentional because of FL's split personality. Honestly dont have too much to say it just felt like a mishandled premise. And i hated the ending, so many twisty twists, why? "But wait there is more twists. But wait even more, and some extra on top"

How Sweet!

When I first read the synopsis of this show, I thought “What on earth could I possibly have in common with this story of two middle aged gay men living and cooking together? Sounds boring!” Boy was I wrong. I’m so glad I gave this J drama a chance. The J drama has plenty of “ma,” the peaceful space and stillness where the beauty of spirit lies. The storyline is light and fluffy without too much “heavy conflict,” while Shiro San takes a break every evening and goes into his kitchen and Shiro San’s kitchen theme music plays and it basically turns into an instructional cooking show. It’s just so cute and sweet to watch. It made me understand that cooking and mealtime isn’t just a “whatever” time, or indulgence, or grotesque addiction like how it’s experienced or shown in the west, it is a sacred ritual of mindfulness, precision, peace, and beauty. And it brings so much happiness and lightness to my heart to watch this show. I could watch it anytime because of its lightness and warmth. What I also loved was how Shiro san’s anxious and moody nature seemed to lift a lot at the last episode after he brought Kenji home to meet his parents- I think it took a huge burden off his mind and he was able to feel lighter and more jovial and relaxed in public as a couple with Kenji. The cafe scene at the very end was one of my favorites (other than the cooking sequences of course), because Shiro San was smiling a lot and looking light hearted, relaxed, and happy. Ah this show brings a smile to my face like a kind of sweet, innocent nostalgia.

I love how Shiro’s way of expressing love is through his cooking, and Kenji, though he is not a bad cook himself, has this sweet innocence of wanting to please Shiro and isn’t too sure of himself. He’s much more relaxed, fun-loving, and expressive compared to the formal and serious Shiro- they are quite the “odd couple,” but they are both endearing in their own way and together. I just felt like giving Kenji a much needed hug whenever he was so unsure of himself. It also made me contemplate how difficult relationships are and the emotional burden they carry, and I would much rather eat these lovely dishes alone!

I noticed that this show was very conservative in terms of showing affection- physical or emotional between the couple even within the home, and yet it felt genuine, innocent, and sweet. Almost like they were just roommates. I am hunting for season 2 now!

this was a 6, the last episodes made it a 3

I was about to rate this drama a 6, just because of some enjoyable moments but the episode 33 made me change my mind.

This drama is a roller coaster... And not in a good way.

You know the plot: young lawyer starts working in a law firm, ends up in a forced coliving situation with her boss and falls in love.
We know the gist, nothing new, but when watching Rom coms we know what we are getting into. So, no problem on that side.

The problem in this show is the inconsistency and frankly boredom.
The first 7 episodes are a fever dreams. The FL is frankly annoying as hell and the ml is a psycho (in these first 7 episodes).
The 2 meet while renting the same apartment simultaneously. The Land Lord made a mistake and rented it twice. This girl establishes she is rightful attenent just "because" and is being very rude and unreasonable. I mean, the ml is the same spot as you..
The ml is a psycho. He can only think in terms of the "law". Citing law article for every minute matters and always talking as he has no soul.
Fortunately is gets better on this aspect, but worse on others.
The FL is supposed to be a fiercefull lawyer full of principles etc, meanwhile she is unable to do any work basically. At first. Her boss is constantly saving her ass and I get it, she is a newbie. After a while she solves cases because someone "randomly" says stuff and a bulb lights up in her head.
Her clients get constantly mistreated and she just stands there saying nothing. I wanted to slap her son many times.
The male lead on the other hand constantly talks about not mixing private and professional lives while mingling in his subordinate's live.
Threatening her to retain her bonuses if she doesn't do as he sees fit.
In one episodes, the FL leads is courted by a friends and the ml just invites himself over not once but twice and the only thing she can do is sit there spacing out...
Where is her combative side supposed to be?
After episode 7, the show becomes a normal rom com. We see them getting closer, talking about cases and it is entertaining.
At the 3/4 marks when they start dating the show just becomes so boring.
Please. We had enough of good looking 30 years old who never had a love story.

Good aspect: the FL collegues. Even though they don't have a story line of their own they are funny, supporting and frankly pleasent to watch.

Ep 27. Let's start fast forwarding.... Boring scenes of them being a couple and saying ultra sweet lame stuff....

Man this last 10 episode are a struggle. I agree with other reviewers about the fact that the characters switched personality. The FL lead was at first bubbly and the ml was cold, distant. Now she looks chronicly depressed and he looks like a happy puppy.

Ep 33. The ml gets on my nerves. This guy preached fairness, professionalism all along but keeps getting into his fiance's matters. She is having lunch with her new collegues trying to build a new path for her, and what does he do?
He comes unannounced, interrupts her, and starts marking "his " territory.
And she barely says anything.
Man I dislike them strongly....
Ep 34v She finally realized he is bossing her around all the time.. wow girl... Weren't you supposed such a smart ass?

Ep 36. they should have broken up. both have toxic behaviors towards each other.

frankly the last episodes were depressing to watch. the FL wasn't a stellar performer in the first place, but the last episodes really should she has no range.

as boring as it can get


Stay away from this drama. There is nothing so good here to be worth this much time.

Best JoongDunk series

I was really shocked when i started watching it, because if i have to be honest i wasn’t really sure about how gmmtv will pull this one out. The plot and the storyline is really interesting and it keeps you invested in the story. The actors did really good job i like the fact that dunk finally got to have a different role and i think he did better than ever. (improved a lot just close that damn eyes when u kiss). I didn’t give this drama a 10 cuz i think the ending was rushed. 12 episodes would be fire especially with this type of plot. Overall It’s really good i hope we get to see more dramas like this!

Rubber Ducks and Missed Spark

Welcome to My Side is about Chen Xiao Zhou, who experiences something strange, every time he sees something yellow, everyone around him turns into a rubber duck. His life only returns to normal after he meets Feng Jia Nan.

This movie actually has an interesting concept with a touch of fantasy. It’s quite unique and could have been great if executed well, but unfortunately, that’s not the case here. Everything feels boring, from the directing to the script. Every moment the leads spend together comes across as bland, because they failed to capture any real chemistry between them, even though the individual acting is actually great. The script is also lacking, the slow first half needed to be more engaging, but the story only picks up in the second half after the plot twist.

Still, overall, I do get the message they were trying to convey, though I expected it to be delivered much better. It’s still decent for killing time, though.
