Wow Pursuit of Jade is deliciously good
Review: Pursuit of Jade — A Visual and Emotional Masterpiece (9/10)Let me just say this right now—Pursuit of Jade has easily entered my top 5 C-dramas of all time. No hesitation. No debate. It’s been a long time since a drama had me this invested, this impressed, and this satisfied from beginning to end.
And honestly? It deserves every bit of that praise.
Cinematography & Direction — Pure Art
From the very first episode, it’s clear that this drama is guided by a director who truly understands visual storytelling. Every frame feels intentional—crafted, not just filmed.
The cinematography is stunning. The lighting, especially around the male lead, isn’t just there to make things look pretty—it means something. It reflects mood, tension, and character depth. The way certain shots are framed, the use of shadows, the soft versus harsh lighting—it all adds layers to the story without needing words.
What really stood out were the parallels between episodes. The way scenes visually echo each other creates this sense of emotional continuity that’s incredibly satisfying to watch. Add in the camera work, transitions, and subtle effects, and the entire drama feels rich, immersive, and honestly… delicious.
Characters & Chemistry — Absolutely Addictive
From the very beginning, I knew the chemistry was going to hit.
The moment the female lead placed her hand on the male lead’s back? That was it. That single interaction carried so much tension and intimacy—it told me everything I needed to know.
And across all 40 episodes, that chemistry never once dropped. It stayed consistently electric. Every glance, every pause, every emotional beat felt real and earned. Their dynamic had depth, progression, and intensity in a way that made it impossible to look away.
What I also loved? No unnecessary second male lead drama. No forced love triangle. The story trusted its main pairing—and it paid off. Even the side couples were well-developed and engaging.
And the fact that he married into her family? That dynamic was fresh, interesting, and executed so well. It added a unique layer to their relationship that made everything even more compelling.
Costume, Hair & Makeup — They Understood the Assignment
I have to talk about the styling because this drama absolutely delivered.
Starting with Zhang Linghe—I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look this good. This is his best look, hands down. The makeup enhanced his features perfectly—the eyes, the brows, everything was sharp and intentional. And that wig? That wig deserves recognition. The structure, the hairline, the way it framed his face—it elevated his entire presence on screen. He needs to keep that styling forever because… wow.
And the female lead? Gorgeous. Truly one of the prettiest Chinese actresses I’ve seen. Her beauty feels effortless—it’s not overdone, it just radiates. And on top of that, she’s incredibly talented yet still feels underrated. This role honestly should push her into a much bigger spotlight.
The costumes were stunning across the board, but her general’s armor? Next level.
The red armor was powerful, striking, unforgettable. And the way her hair was styled with it—clean, strong, perfectly balanced—it completed the entire look. Every time she appeared like that, it felt like a moment.
Performances & Side Characters — Everyone Ate
When I say everyone delivered, I mean everyone.
This is actually the first C-drama I’ve completed since March 2025, which says a lot about how engaging it is. It held my attention the entire way through, and that’s not easy.
The side characters weren’t just background—they added depth and richness to the story. Manager Yu was phenomenal—every scene she was in, she commanded attention. Characters like Ning Changning brought so much heart and authenticity.
And the acting overall? 10/10.
No weak links. No one falling behind. The entire cast understood the assignment and executed it flawlessly.
And on top of that—they all looked incredibly good doing it.
Adaptation — A Story Worth Experiencing Twice
I had actually read the novel about two years before watching this, so I went in with some familiarity—but not enough to spoil anything.
And I’m so glad I did both.
The drama stands strong on its own while still honoring the source material. It captures the emotional core of the story while enhancing it through visuals, performances, and pacing. It felt like rediscovering something I loved—but in a richer, more immersive way.
And I have to talk about that alternate ending, because it was one of the most impactful parts of the entire drama.
The show gives us a glimpse into a “what if” scenario—what if the central tragedy never happened. And instead of feeling unnecessary, it actually deepens everything we’ve already seen.
I loved how the core relationships remained intact. That bond, that connection—it was fated, regardless of circumstance. Even in a world without pain and loss, they still found each other, still chose each other, and still built a life together. That’s powerful.
And then there’s Qi Min . Seeing that, without the tragedy, he wouldn’t have turned into who he became? That hit. It really reinforces the idea that people aren’t just “born” one way—sometimes they are shaped, even pushed, by circumstances beyond their control.
The same goes for everyone else—Manager Yu, the royal princess—so many lives would have been softer, happier, untouched by unnecessary suffering.
And that’s what makes this alternate ending so meaningful. It quietly highlights a deeper truth:
the consequences of decisions made by those in power don’t just stay at the top—they ripple outward, affecting innocent people in devastating ways.
Final Thoughts
Pursuit of Jade reminded me why I love C-dramas in the first place.
It’s beautiful, emotionally engaging, and driven by characters and relationships that feel real and compelling. It doesn’t rely on overused tropes or unnecessary drama—it trusts its story, its cast, and its audience.
And the result? Something unforgettable.
9/10 — One of the best dramas I’ve watched in a long time.

Sung Hoon in a mini/vertical drama!!!
Well I was shocked when I saw Sung Hoon in this drama. I get acting parts might be thin on the ground (considering new actors are coming through all the time), but a vertical/mini drama this was not what I was expecting. Hopefully the pay was good. As the drama goes, it wasn't one of the best out there. (There are better stories on the Vigloo app, DramaBox, well some of their stories can be hit and miss). Sung Hoon was the best thing about it. He plays the male lead really well, especially if they are a CEO type (which he is in this drama). The story has been done time and again in these vertical/mini dramas. Usually the supporting characters are more brutal towards the female lead. The male lead is then either picking up the pieces, defending her but not knowing who she really is (like in this story) or shielding her from a vile ex and his stupid family (like in this drama). The female lead was pretty enough. Not the best actress out there, but a lot of the time these vertical/mini dramas have new actors/actresses who are trying to build up their acting portfolio so working alongside someone as seasoned as Sung Hoon could only help her. The most frustrating thing was whenever she spoke, she hardly opened her mouth. Either her veneers were hurting her or she just was told to play her that way. Either way it was very distracting. The rest of the cast were OK. They seemed comfortable in these types of dramas. The actor who played the second grandson opposite Sung Hoon was good. He worked opposite him well. Overall this story was fine. Done quite a few times before, but in the end because a seasoned Korean actor like Sung Hoon was in it, people (like myself) would be drawn to watch it because of the curiosity of watching him in this type of drama, and missing seeing him in mainstream kdramas. Now I will go off and watch him again in Perfect, Marriage, Revenge or Death's Game (his last mainstream kdrama-that I know of) to see him in something that shows his best acting skills. Sorry this drama did not showcase this for me.Was this review helpful to you?
The Standard Historical Dramas should Aspire To
I didn’t expect to say this, but Pursuit of Jade is the only Chinese historical drama I’ve genuinely enjoyed, and honestly, it should be the baseline for all historical dramas moving forward. What sets it apart is how real everything feels. The acting by our two main leads is superb, layered, restrained, and emotionally honest without ever tipping into exaggeration. I especially appreciated the minimal makeup and natural styling, which made the characters feel human and believable rather than overly polished.
The cinematography is stunning, soft, atmospheric, and intentional. Combined with the incredible character chemistry, it creates something deeply immersive.
I’ll admit, the plot did start to slip a bit around ep 30, but by then, I was already so attached to the characters that I honestly didn’t care. That emotional investment carried the story all the way through.
If more historical dramas focused on authenticity, performance, and emotional depth like this, the genre would be in a completely different place.
Absolutely unforgettable.

I took the bait, I give it 8.
I know a lot of people loved this one, but it fell flat for me after the first third. They could have done so much more with Rongcheng. The collapsed mall plot felt distracting. I know that was the major point of the show, but I just had no patience for it. The side characters (except Pei) felt flat to me. I think the show runners tried too hard to be different, without actually fully executing that.Things that worked well:
- the music ⭐
- the chemistry between the leads (arguably, they both have tremendous chemistry with anyone they star with lol)
- the IDEA of the VR game... they just did not maximize the potential
Things that were frustrating:
- XZY's mom
- Hu Xiu's dad getting hit by a car subplot
- The plot with Zhao Yan's husband... felt so unnecessary to go through all that just to make her single so that XZY's friend and she could be a second couple. Bunch of fluff.
Sorry, guys. This one was better than some moderns, but it did not impress me. I would give it a 7.0 but I think the cast performed well (as best as they could with this script).

Refreshing
Firstly, the Screenwriter/ Director and Cinematographers deserve to be appreciated. They have done great job in fleshing out Girl Rules universe. If only the editing would have been better and set a bit more grand then the series would be so much better.Cast was impeccable as usual and expected. The most refreshing aspect of this show is that it is bold and unapologetic. The main characters are all flawed and toxic in their own way which is so human compared to the usual green flag MCs. Another thing I love the most about this series is the colours of props and sets so even though Art Director could not bring grander sets where it should have been, they certainly did a great job with what they had.
Even though Screenwriter and Actresses were running on a tight schedule I love the little nuances and details on each character which makes their personalities feel closer and even relatable.
Also, (unrelated) somehow it feels like Jojo himself sat down with editor and then discovered all these upgraded effects and transitions and put them just to get the 'Gen Z' effect.

Pursuit of Jade is a masterpiece of storytelling with one missing piece
Pursuit of Jade is one of the best Chinese dramas I’ve ever watched which is why I give it a 9/10. the only reason I deducted a point is because of the male lead which I’ll talk about later. What truly stands out about this drama is the richness of its plot and storytelling. the events are not simple they are layered and interconnected and full of developments that constantly keep the viewer engaged . the story moves smoothly between political conflicts , schemes and wars alongside the romantic storyline without ever feeling messy or overwhelming . every event leads naturally to the next and even the smallest details play a role in shaping the story making the entire experience feel cohesive and immersive.
What’s even more impressive is that the drama doesn’t rely solely on its main plot. it weaves multiple subplots that add depth and dimension whether through the backstories of side characters or the evolution of their relationships . this balance between tension , drama and romance keeps the pacing strong so it never loses momentum in the middle like many dramas do , it keeps you hooked until the very end.
As for Shangyu she is an outstanding character who carries the drama effortlessly and I’ve genuinely connected with . her struggles felt raw and deeply emotional to the point where I could feel the weight of everything she was going through as if I were experiencing it alongside he r. Tian Xi Wei’s performance brought the character to life delivering every emotion with sincerity and depth . she has definitely become an actress I will look forward to watching in future projects.
On the other hand Zhang Ling He whose best historical role in my opinion is still Xi Wei in The Story of Kunning Palace , didn't show the same strength here . his character was introduced as a powerful and feared marquis but what was shown on screen didn’t fully match that image. his strength felt more like something that was told rather than shown . most of the time it was the female lead who stepped in, fought and saved the situation even against the strongest opponents creating a noticeable imbalance.
I don’t mean that the female lead overshadowed him , the issue lies in the lack of defining moments for him. he rarely gets scenes that truly highlight his strength or influence and at times he feels more like a supporting presence. even side characters including minor soldiers were given stronger and more impactful moments . it’s hard to say whether this comes from Zhang Ling He’s limitations in action scenes or from the writing but he doesn’t fully live up to how he was presented . I do hope his role in The Road to Glory with the same writer will be better.
Meanwhile Deng Kei delivered an outstanding performance as Qi Min. His character was psychologically complex and carefully written from his backstory to his motivations for revenge and even his family dynamics . His cold aura and strong presence made him one of the most compelling characters in the drama and I truly hope to see him in leading roles in the future.
The love story between Gongsun and Princess Shu was also beautiful and heartfelt. Personally I found their relationship more appealing than the second lead couple that gained more popularity .
As for Li Huai An portrayed by Ren Hao , his character was somewhat disappointing . he wasn’t given any significant moments to showcase intelligence or real impact on the storyline which made his presence feel underused.
Overall , the acting across the drama was strong and convincing with almost every character delivering a solid performance . The fight scenes were smooth and enjoyable especially those involving the female lead which added a lot to the viewing experience.
The direction was also impressive . I especially loved the visual atmosphere , the snowy settings contrasted beautifully with the warmth of the city creating a unique aesthetic that sometimes even felt reminiscent of Switzerland.
The soundtrack was another major strength . the music was beautifully composed and perfectly matched the tone of each scenewhether it was intense battle moments , emotional drama or romantic scenes enhancing the overall immersion and emotional depth of the story .
In the end Pursuit of Jade is a richly detailed and well written drama that successfully balances action , politics and romance despite some shortcomings in the male lead’s portrayal, the strength of the characters, performances and storytelling makes it a truly memorable and worthwhile watch.

a Little GEM in its genre!!
hear me out! we are specifically talking about short, light hearted not too deep dramas, and in this category, I think this drama is absolutely adorable.plot: a city boy struggling with his direction In life goes back to the little village he used to visit during summer vacations. here he rekindles his friendship with a girl he used to be friends with and finds a new path in life.
plot is simple, straightforward and frankly well executed.
this drama is adorable in every way possible.
cast: the actors did a good job. the characters were endearing, funny and had enough of a personality to move the plot.
mention of honor goes to the FL. her character even though annoying at times, was really cute, moving and funny.
the uncle was personally my favourite. they had such good chemistry I loved seeing their interactions.
set: absolutely loved the atmosphere of a rural small town where everything has a different pace. people are close and care for each other.
drama: the plot was simple, well executed and I Neven struggled while watching. I know this is a short series but I never got bored, not even once.
I laughed so many times because some scenes are literally so cringe they become funny.
I have to mention the "Wi-Fi password song".
this is a little Easter egg that keeps popping up from time to time😅.
love story: don't expect anything crazy. this a very nice and pure series about teen Agers.
I really liked how they slow build up the relationship between the main leads. it's really sweet to watch. at the end we get a "kiss" as a reward for their struggles along the way. I think it was the right choice. this is a drama with delicate emotions not burning passion.
overall this drama is really good. we have a good atmosphere, funny moments, moving moments (oh yeah, we even cry a bit) and a cute love story.
I dropped so many dramas this month I was starting to lose hope but then this one appeared.
it's so short I think you won't missing out giving it a go.

I loved it!!! It was so funny!!! That "out of breath" kiss was so good and funny, and that proud face of Watarai afterwards. And "oh no! I want to kiss you again! " it kept me grinning the whole time. These 2 extra episode were just so wholesome and funny. This was a perfect ending of a great series.
Though i would love to see a second seasongn filled with lost of fun ond lovey dovey moments of the whole group.
Great visuals, fun music and amazing acting.

A must watch.
Been waiting for this show since ages 😂😭.It was a wonderful and entertaining watch.
Would have given it 10/10, but genuinely this drama lacked on a few parts:
1) too many fillers and unnecessary scenes from start
2) ending plot could have been better
3) 2nd lead hot scenes. I know people loving such torturous scenes, but then only production and direction should be blamed. They shot and gave such scenes completely ignoring the gravity of such scenes. They themselves relied of the hotness quotient. So can't blame users, when zhuyu team themselves romantise such SA scenes.
4) Xie zheng, the great marquis of Wuan deserved better battle fight scenes. We couldn't see the true power and rawness of Xie zheng at all.
Nevertheless, it was an entertaining watch, but definitely could have been better.
I will also be angry at the leaks, show could have achieved higher numbers if not for these leaks. Iqiyi should take full responsibility of the mess they made.
Acting wise, everyone slayed and would definitely watch their upcoming shows. Wishing the whole cast all the best.

WORTH THE WATCH.
Pursuit of jade is the first chinese drama to satisfy me this much, I enjoyed every single episode, the cinematography, the scenery, the outfits, the detailing. Everything was to perfection and I loved every single detail about the show, the osts were perfect as they gave the chinese traditional music vibes. I enjoyed every single scene. The director did amazing, Zou Yue did amazing with the storyline and adaptation of the original novel, the actors acted precisely and frankly, I enjoyed the chemistry of the first couple as well as the second couple. The character development didn't disappoint either or I really thought that they would ruin a few characters. The loyalty of the ministers towards their state really moved me. No matter what, they were trying to find a right ruler to preserve their state. Wei Yan was righteous though his actions to prove that we're not. Killing is bad and no action could justify it but his side of the story was valid too, I could understand why he did do stuff he shouldn't have and grand tutor li was utterly useless. Qi Min was a pitiful character too, it's just his circumstances which lead him to be the way he was, he wasn't raised properly but his conscience did know the difference between right and wrong and his wrong can never become his right. Yu Qian Qian, a passing time traveller deserved to go back to her realm, I felt bad for her because she did nothing to have sought the cause and effects that severe but then again everyone has their own fate which they have to fulfil. Xie Zheng, Xie Jiuheng orMarquis of Wu'an, his character was truly up to the expectations, I enjoyed how Zhang Ling He protrayed his character and as for Fan Chang Yu or Wei Chang Yu, her character was written beautifully, her character development was perfect and it really shows a illiterate person has prove herself and educate herself as she embarks on her journey, Tian Xi Wei did outstanding with her performance and I look forward to more of her work. Overall, the cast was perfect, everything had been selected carefully and was persecuted with perfection. This has to be my top chinese drama. I look forward to more adaptations like these and I look forward to the future works of the director and screenwriter as well as the actors. Pursuit of Jade was truly a masterpiece 🫀.Was this review helpful to you?

fun, yet somewhat confusing, show
I only say confusing in the context of there being so many names to keep straight, plus the fact that a few of them had two names. That being said, this was a fun watch. Not laugh-out-loud funny, but there were oh so many cute scenes. I enjoyed trying to figure out who the true villains were. The standout story lines were the ones involving the roommates of Room 301. Hang Geum Bo (Park Shin Hye) is a 36-year-old that goes undercover at a company, pretending to be 20. This was made more interesting by the fact that she was not a nice person. She was hard to get along with, had no filter for things she would say, and would not suffer fools gladly. Yet the four women (and the darling daughter of one of the women) eventually became fast friends and learned to lean on and protect one another. I loved the found friendship/family trope, so I was all in for this.
The only one I didn't like in this was Go Kyung Pyo (Sin Jeong U). To me, he seemed too stiff and monotone.
This is not a romance. Geum Bo and Jeong U were in a relationship years ago. Then he stabbed her in the back when they worked together. I think part of her plan was to get revenge on him. Cho Han Gyeol as Albert O was wonderful as the young man that gets a crush on her, but it doesn't go anywhere.
The ending shows her moving on to another undercover case, leaving the door open for a season 2, but I don't think it's necessary, and I would miss the rest of the cast and their interactions.

Ending feels rushed for a slow drama
Before the drama ended, I would think it was suitable for casual drama enjoyers, and the sole reason I watched this drama was because of Kang Hyewon. The way the story is executed is meh. They want to stick with a realistic ending, yet it feels a bit rushed for slow drama. The writing is kinda too fairytale for some characters and plots. Getting hooked on the first few episodes, but went downhill as it continued. Was this review helpful to you?
Cute but cliche.
So KING THE LAND was a okayish drama for me.Visually it was FANTASTIC.
THE CAST WERE AMAZING.
OSTs WERE GOOD.
Story was kind off bland. It was cliche. We already know what happens in such kind of stories.
The characters had loopholes. At times i ws getting confused. There was good chemistry but something was missing. Also, i felt it just ran fast.
Didn't feel like true love. Well, it was lovely but things just happend too fast... i wasnt that thrilled about it. And yea, some ideas in the drama were so stupid.
The trip to Thailand was unnecessary but thanks i got to watch the visuals.
The second couple were good.
The third friend's husband was pissing off.
He needed a better worst treatment.
The daughter was soo good.
The grandma was a star.
Ji hu's part was kinda sweet.
And the staff were the best.
Now the ending, it was too bland. Very very fast. I wanted it to detailed.... but they just jumped from places to places... scenes to scenes.
Eneding wasn't satisfactory though it was sweet.
Overall, it visual good. One time watch is fine.
Its a solid 7-8/10

A Weekly Obsession Fueled by Powerful Performances
Seeing these two actors reunite in a spin-off sequel to A Breeze of Love was something I never expected—but I’m genuinely glad it happened. With their undeniable chemistry and striking visuals, it would’ve been a waste not to bring them back together on screen. While the story could certainly benefit from tighter writing and more polish, it’s the actors, their natural performances and electric connection, that kept me fully invested. They bring a level of authenticity that makes every moment feel effortless and engaging.
What I particularly enjoyed is how the series builds tension over time. As someone who followed each episode weekly, I found myself constantly drawn in by the suspense and emotional pull. The narrative may not be entirely straightforward but that unpredictability adds to its charm, creating a compelling and layered storyline.
Despite some room for improvement in the direction, the show succeeds in delivering consistent thrills. Each episode ends on a note that leaves you with goosebumps, making the wait for the next installment both agonizing and exciting.
And ultimately, it all comes back to the actors. Their performances aren’t just good, they’re captivating. They embody their roles with such depth, nuance and sincerity that you can’t help but be pulled into their world. Every glance, every line, every subtle emotion feels intentional and real. Magnetic chemistry. Unforgettable presence. Undeniable talents

Too long
The first few episodes were so good. The chemistry...swoon, the slow burn of them liking each other....swoon, the flirting and silliness; it was lovely. Even when they first got together, it was still nice and exciting and heartfluttering. Then people found out.
The brother over reacted, the sister overreacted. Their dads were the only normal people. And that mother....oh my god, I have never hated a character more in my life. As a mother I found her behaviour towards her daughter from the very beginning - even before she found out - absolutely abhorrent. I assume it shows the relationship in that culture as they are, but come on....the manipulation, the hitting and screaming at everyone, saying it was for her daughter but really she was a groundlessly elitist snob . I really hoped she'd fall off a cliff like a Disney villain, I haven't been so annoyed by a non violent non murderous character since Delores Umbridge in Harry Potter. And her insistance that she go back to that ridiculous ex who should have been put in jail but instead just seemed to cease to exist...absurd.
Sadly the leads' chemistry seemed to disappate after everyone found out too. The fact he hugged her like a child was consistency off putting.
On top of the vile woman was the needless involment of JunHui and GyeongSeong's father...added nothing.
The sexual harrasment at work side storyline...added nothing.
The amout of time that could have been saved by cutting down the 'walking around looking thoughful' scenes would have halved this series running time...no need...added nothing.
And the music....dear lord....anyone who has watched this show in its entirety will have heard those 3 songs more than anyone involved in the production, writng and singing of those songs. It was awful, repetitve and distracting. If I never hear a rendition of Stand by Your Man for the rest of my life, I'll be okay with that.
IMO JunHui, once they got together was a little too into her, and treated her like a delicate flower. I'm not one that is against protective men, I like that trope, but considering she was supposed to be 15 years older than him, he treated her like a child at times. And it took way too long for anyone to stand up to her bloody mother, not that it made a difference.
And how she just let him go despite an awful controlling mother and a shitty masogonist filled job was absolutely beyond me. 'I'm more mature now, I've grown up...' WHAT?!?! So act like a grown up and leave with the man you supposedly love!
I was also super confused and frustrated how she made out he was the one in the wrong for leaving. How was any of that his fault. He did everything he possibly could for her. She didn't even want to move in together, if I ever watched it again - which I really can't imagine I will - I'd watch it with an eye to see if she actually really did ever have feelings for him because her behaviour would imply she didn't. Certainly not as much as him.
And finally....how could she tell that mother of hers that none of it was her fault!!!
Jung Haein was the saving grace of this show and Junhui deserved better. She wasn't worth it.
