a village full of stories

i really wasn't prepared for how much xiao fang would end up meaning to me. going in, i expected a cute rural comedy, but it turned into something so much deeper and more emotionally resonant than i ever imagined.

the story follows fang, who becomes pregnant before marriage, and how that one event sends shockwaves through her family and the entire village. the drama uses her story to explore generational expectations placed on women. through three generations of the women in her family, we see how each of them faced similar societal pressures, yet responded to them in completely different ways. it's such a thoughtful look at how times change, but certain judgments still linger.

beyond its central story, it also explores emotional neglect and absent parents trying to make up for lost time. it doesn't treat forgiveness as something that's automatically owed. the hurt is given space to exist, and the characters are allowed to feel angry, resentful, or hesitant before they're ready to move forward.

the humor is where the show truly excels. i wasn't expecting to laugh nearly as much as i did. the village setting is packed with nosy neighbors, overly enthusiastic matchmakers, and all the chaos that comes with a close knit community. even when the drama tackles difficult topics, the comedy keeps it feeling warm and comforting instead of overwhelming.

visually, it's absolutely gorgeous. every countryside shot feels so peaceful that it genuinely made me want to pack my bags and move somewhere rural just to wake up to those views every morning. in an era where so many productions feel rushed or visually uninspired, i really appreciate the amount of care that went into the cinematography <3

i also have to give so much credit to the supporting cast. every character is given room to grow instead of existing solely to support the leads. even the people who seem frustrating or narrow minded at first gradually reveal why they think the way they do. nobody is painted as purely good or purely evil, because real people rarely are.

overall, this has been one of the easiest 10/10s i've given in a long time. i honestly don't think there's been a single boring episode. it's funny, heartfelt, beautifully shot, and filled with characters that feel like real people rather than fictional archetypes.

Un potere che sboccia... E che presto appassice. Tra valido intrattenimento e potenziale sprecato.

Se ci rifacciamo al titolo, “Blossoms of power” è certamente un drama al quale non mancano né le questioni di potere né la componente floreale (fiori nelle poesie, fiori disegnati, fiori infilati tra i capelli, fiori salvavita, fiori che sbocciano e appassiscono in una notte, fiori in vaso che si rovesciano mentre i due si baciano, fiori ricamati, fiori che danno l’insonnia). Tanti fiori, insomma. E anche una “fioritura” di potere, certo, poiché questo è il nocciolo del drama.

Partiamo dagli aspetti narrativi che più ho apprezzato: la questione della fusione di anime e in un corpo altrui, elemento sì caratterizzante ma non oggetto di un focus eccessivo, risultando così interessante ma mai pesante o ingombrante. Tratto originale è l’aver ereditato, insieme al corpo di Shen Xi He, anche tutti i suoi ricordi, particolarità che non solo funziona molto bene ma che evita anche banali fraintendimenti e altri meccanismi già visti mille volte. Ad arricchire la storia ci pensano inoltre i molteplici intrighi di palazzo, che rendono pienamente l’idea di dinamiche complesse e creano una rete di conflitti e alleanze in continuo mutamento. Sono davvero tanti e non tutti necessariamente collegati direttamente al pairing principale: per una volta, insomma, almeno una parte del mondo non ruota attorno ai protagonisti.

Valida anche la caratterizzazione dei personaggi: abbiamo a che fare con una protagonista femminile forte e determinata, che non cerca il grande amore della sua vita né qualcuno che la protegga o che si spenda per il suo bene, bensì la piena libertà di essere – nel bene e nel male – autrice del proprio destino. Sul fronte maschile, il principe ereditario Xian Hua Yong è uno splendido concentrato di contraddizioni affascinanti: cagionevole ma abile nelle arti marziali, astuto stratega ma anche giovane dal cuore puro, abile manipolatore e teneramente vulnerabile allo tempo stesso. Un personaggio davvero sfaccettato, capace di rimarcare costantemente la propria identità – intesa come caratterizzazione - con un semplice sorriso complice o un finto colpo di tosse. La chimica tra i due rende vivo il loro rapporto, costruito su astuzia e rispetto reciproco, tant’è che quando cominciano a fare squadra, la carrellata di sguardi complici e i dialoghi sottili danno al drama una marcia in più.

La buona riuscita dei personaggi è sicuramente più merito del cast che della sceneggiatura. Apprezzo Meng Zi Yi fin dalla sua prova in “Ever night” risalente a quasi una decade fa, anche lì nei panni di una donna forte e determinata. La sua recitazione elegante e raffinata si sposa particolarmente con ruoli decisi e composti, nei quali non deve continuamente dispensare sorrisi o lacrime, ma dove la difficoltà sta nel far emergere il personaggio nonostante l’aura di algidità e l’atteggiamento da glaciale calcolatrice. Riesce a far coesistere con grande naturalezza l’anima di Gu Qing Zhi con il corpo e i ricordi di Shen Xi He. Per quanto riguarda He Yi Qin, sarò onesta: non mi aveva particolarmente colpita in “Speed and Love” e la sua presenza in questo drama era più un deterrente che un incentivo, ma devo ammettere di essermi ricreduta strada facendo. Intendiamoci, non lo metterei nella rosa degli attori più talentuosi – c’è ancora molta ma molta strada da fare – però in questo drama porta a casa una prova dignitosa che, nell’insieme, funziona e fa il suo dovere. A livello espressivo trasmette in modo credibile una buona gamma di emozioni. Tra i personaggi secondari, gli attori che a mio avviso hanno centrato in pieno il personaggio sono senza ombra di dubbio Xu Zheng Xi nei panni del Quinto Principe e Cao Wei Yu nel ruolo del sovrano. Quest’ultimo in particolare ha dato vita a un personaggio ambiguo, che si prestava credibilmente a più interpretazioni e alimentando così il costante dubbio nello spettatore. Passando ai personaggi secondari – dove spesso così secondari non sono – tutti i principi hanno, ognuno a modo suo, una ragione di esistere, anche se in alcuni momenti le loro storie sembrano più un esercizio di stile che parte integrante della trama principale. Bene che ci siano, ma si potevano gestire meglio, insomma. La coppia formata da Bu Shu Lin e Cui Jin Bai è una ventata di aria fresca, con una dinamica divertente e una chimica accattivante che ruba la scena in molte occasioni.

Non tutto, però, ha funzionato a dovere. I primi episodi tengono alta l’attenzione grazie al ritmo serrato, ma al contempo chiedono anche un po’ troppo. Una sfilza di personaggi vengono introdotti a raffica ed è davvero facile andare in confusione, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i principi, tutti con nomi simili. Per distinguerli ho dovuto affibbiare loro dei soprannomi, per cui il secondo era “L’inconsistente”, il quarto “Il rancoroso Sacrificato”, il quinto “Il devotamente Ossessionato”, il sesto “Il Bello perso per strada” e il nono “Il Guerriero infatuato”. Dovessi etichettare anche il protagonista, la scelta ricadrebbe su “Il Fulminato”, perché è l’aspetto che più mi è saltato all’occhio quale pecca di un personaggio che per il resto funziona. Questo perché il l'essere rimasto affascinato dalle abilità e dall'acume di FL, innalzata per questo al suo livello, avviene comunque in modo troppo repentino, proprio come un fulmine a ciel sereno. L'ammirazione diventa in breve un misto di amore, devozione e rispetto e da lì poi inizia un lungo corteggiamento, un gioco di scacchi sentimentale che può anche starci, ma l’inizio partita è stato davvero un po’ troppo brusco e affrettato. Per quanto abbia apprezzato la protagonista femminile, se la forma è risultata splendida il contenuto si è rivelato un po’ carente, nel senso che ci troviamo davanti a una donna ferocemente intelligente, capace di destreggiarsi con sicurezza tra le insidie della corte e che sa cosa vuol dire perdere tutto. Manca però una motivazione profonda a questa sua sete di potere, tant’è che il dolore e la sua determinazione sembrano più raccontati che sentiti. Questa cosa del "raccontare invece di mostrare" si ripropone più volte, in vari contesti, durante la serie, quale limite evidente e anche piuttosto noioso. Qualche perplessità sull’epilogo del pairing secondario, piuttosto banale, moscio e deludente. E' stato un po' come avere tra le mani una materia prima di qualità e non sapere bene come trattarla. Si poteva fare molto ma molto di più, e la coppia, per come la si era portata avanti, meritava davvero uno sforzo maggiore. Riguardo agli intrighi, dicevo all’inizio che è un bene che siano molteplici, poiché sarebbe stato semplicistico e ridicolo far ruotare l’intero drama intorno a un unico ostacolo. Il ritmo dell’intreccio politico è però altalenante e, dopo un buon avvio, incappa in una fase centrale di stallo, permeata da troppi momenti di vita quotidiana piacevoli ma non così necessari, aspetto che porta lo spettatore quasi a dimenticarsi del mistero dell’avvelenamento, questione che verrà ripresa in mano solo nell’ultima parte e liquidata in fretta e furia, con una rivelazione che arriva come un pugno in un occhio (poteva starci benissimo, idea anche intelligente, ma gestita davvero coi piedi).


ATTENZIONE: SPOILER!!!
Ultima nota dolente, il finale: per un’amante degli happy ending come la sottoscritta, la dipartita del ML a quattro o cinque episodi dalla conclusione è davvero un colpo basso. Non mi fa impazzire, non è gratificante, ma posso accettarlo, se ha senso. Però patti chiari e resti morto. Il ritorno dal nulla dopo anni nell’epilogo è davvero una caduta di stile, una scelta che vanifica tutto il pathos precedente e che manca sostanzialmente di coraggio. E no, non è una sorpresa inaspettata. Solo la presa in giro di una sceneggiatura che, nell’indecisione, ha voluto mantenere il piede in due scarpe. Peccato che così facendo nessuna ha calzato in modo giusto.

Dal punto di vista tecnico, siamo a un livello qualitativo medio-alto con una cura quasi maniacale per i dettagli. La fotografia è splendida, con una palette cromatica calda e autunnale che avvolge ogni scena in un'atmosfera sognante ed elegante: i toni dorati e ambrati, caricati del giallo intenso delle foglie di Ginkgo biloba, dominano le scene di corte, creando un senso di opulenza e intrigo, mentre le tinte più cupe e fredde accompagnano i momenti di tensione e pericolo. La luce, spesso soffusa ma prevalentemente naturale, esalta la bellezza dei costumi e dei volti degli attori, regalando immagini nitide e pulite. La cinematografia compie scelte interessanti: non si limita a inquadrature statiche, ma gioca con movimenti di macchina che seguono i personaggi nei loro intrighi, creando un dinamismo che riflette la complessità della trama. I campi lunghi mostrano la maestosità delle architetture e dei paesaggi, mentre i primi piani catturano ogni sfumatura espressiva dei personaggi nei momenti salienti. La regia mostra una mano sicura e una visione chiara, riuscendo a bilanciare i momenti di intimità romantica con le sequenze più epiche e politiche. Il montaggio segue un ritmo disomogeneo, soprattutto nella seconda parte, ma funziona a dovere nei primi episodi e sicuramente nei vari momenti clou. Scenografia e costumi meriterebbero un capitolo a parte: la meticolosità è impressionante, ogni drappo, gioiello o ricamo sulle vesti contribuisce a definire il personaggio stesso. Anche la colonna sonora, con il brano di Zhou Shen in testa, è di altissimo livello e sottolinea perfettamente i momenti più emozionanti.


In conclusione l’ho trovato un drama complessivamente meritevole. La sua forza risiede nella peculiarità dei suoi protagonisti, con una chimica di coppia che funziona, un valido cast di supporto e una produzione visiva di tutto rispetto. Il tallone è – come spesso accade - la sceneggiatura, incapace di sviluppare adeguatamene e con i giusti tempi molte dinamiche. Adatto a chi è alla ricerca di un drama storico che dia priorità al romance e ai personaggi carismatici, meno per chi auspica a una trama politica solida e corente dall’inizio alla fine. Valido intrattenimento, ma gli è mancata qualche carta per essere qualcosa di più.

Procedural KBL i liked it..

I really enjoyed the mix between the romance and the procedural aspect of the story. I also liked that the show didn't rely on excessive comedy. The characters were genuinely interesting, with strong personalities and memorable actions.

That being said, their relationship is definitely built on harassment... but somehow it's handled in a way that works. It's hard for me to explain. Maybe it's because Chae Ha is so passive while Tae Son constantly talks down to him and doesn't treat him very well.

My biggest issue with the series is the character development. We only learn the basics about them, and I wish we had gotten more details about their backgrounds, motivations, and personalities.

The last two episodes were disappointing. Everything felt so rushed, both the investigation and the romance. I honestly think the series would have benefited from having 12 episodes instead of rushing the ending.

Despite those flaws, I still had a great time watching it. The series is entertaining, and Tae Son was definitely my favorite character. He was a big reason why I enjoyed the show so much.

One of the best cdrama's of 2026!!

I really loved the ml's character and the love he has for fml.
I really admired the fml's character, very intelligent and head-strong but they could have done more with her character than what was presented, especially towards the end....they could have focused more on her and let go of the 5th prince's character/storyline(respectfully he should have been killed off earlier).
The pacing in the beginning was really good, not too politics heavy nor too much romance, it was balanced really well. But in the last few episodes, some plot points could have been moved up a few episodes as not to include everything at the end.
(I've heard that they stayed true to the novel, I can understand as to why somethings were excuted as is.)
Very happy they also gave us a special episode.

Overall: It was an great watch.

Una visione godibile che intrattiene ma finisce lì

Confidavo molto in questo progetto perchè è un genere che amo, ma sono rimasta un pochino delusa perchè mi aspettavo un drama eccellente e invece per me non è stato così.
Mi ha preso tantissimo onestamente, infatti la visione non è stata pesante ma piacevole anche perchè il ritmo è incalzante e non ti annoi. Quello che ho apprezzato del drama è la premessa e i protagonisti che ho trovato interessanti ma anche qui non eclatanti, perchè secondo me potevano essere approfonditi di più.
La regia in alcune scelte mi è piaciuta, ci sono spesso delle belle inquadrature ma molte cose non mi hanno convinto.
Ad esempio tutta la parte girata nell'altro mondo ovvero quello degli spiriti che è palesemente ispirata a stranger things, solo che a mio parere in the east palace che ha una trama totalmente differente questo concept non sta bene, inoltre risultava molto finto e io sono del parere che anche se è soprannaturale quindi qualcosa che non esiste, devi comunque farmi credere che è vero, che esiste perchè nella storia che mi stai narrando è la realtà. Altra scelta che non ho apprezzato sempre inerente a quando il protagonista va nel mondo degli spiriti è il cambio di vestiti, ma perchè? Non ho trovato il senso di questa sua trasformazione stile in winx, ci sta benissimo con le armi e anzi bello il collegamento con il bastoncino di legno che diventa una spada, l'ho trovato motivato e sensato ma il cambio di outfit e capelli differenti no.
Insomma è una regia che non sempre mi ha fatto impazzire come scelte di messa in scena, con questo non intendo dire che faccia pietà perchè assolutamente no, le regie pessime sono di certo altre.
Per quanto riguarda la trama come dicevo apprezzo la premessa e comunque fa il suo lavoro ma rimane troppo banale e di conseguenza statico, per chi ha visto tanti drama è un pò il solito intrigo di palazzo.
Anche se devo dire che ci sono alcuni plot twist molto carini e poi non si capiva mai chi fosse il vero cattivo, sono arrivata alla conclusione che lo sono in tanti e non c'è un vero e solo cattivo in questa storia e questo mi è piaciuto molto.
Il rapporto tra i due protagonisti è carino ma sinceramente non mi ha lasciato molto.
Secondo me si sente molto l'influenza occidentale ma del resto è un prodotto Netflix quindi penso sia normale, anche in altri drama prodotti da Netflix ho sentito questo influenza dal punto di vista di linguaggio visivo e narrativo.
In conclusione è un drama molto carino e godibile da vedere e che comunque consiglio, soprattutto agli amanti del genere.

muito potencial, pouco desenvolvimento

Comecei Te Vejo no Trabalho com expectativas altas. Os primeiros episódios foram bem promissores, trazendo um romance leve, personagens carismáticos e uma história que parecia ter muito potencial.
Infelizmente, conforme o dorama avançou, a trama perdeu o ritmo. O que começou envolvente acabou ficando repetitivo, com conflitos que pareciam girar sempre em torno das mesmas situações. Em vários momentos, senti que os problemas apresentados eram desnecessários e até infantis, criando dramas que poderiam ter sido resolvidos com uma simples conversa.
O casal principal tem química, mas nem isso foi suficiente para sustentar a história até o final. Alguns episódios deram a impressão de estarem apenas prolongando a trama, tornando a experiência cansativa.
No geral, é um dorama que começou muito bem, mas que, para mim, desperdiçou seu potencial com conflitos repetitivos e pouco convincentes. Vale pela proposta inicial e pelos primeiros episódios, mas o desenvolvimento deixou bastante a desejar.

Everybody should watch this !

I am so mad at myself for not starting this drama earlier! why didn't I listen to those who suggested it to me? I am blown away by how amazing it was! It’s so sad that the themes of bullying are the most realistic. Honestly, the only flaw in this drama was that it had only 8 episodes, each about 35 minutes long, which felt criminal! Ten minutes of credits deserve a red card (if you catch the pun). I really hope to see Sun Ho in the second season. As for the action, it was top-notch, and this actor is captivating! His eyes convey so much; they speak louder than his words! That's some incredible acting.

This drama perfectly balances legal cases, heartfelt moments, humor, romance, and meaningful life lessons without ever feeling overly heavy.

The biggest reason this drama works so well is Park Eun-bin. Her performance is simply phenomenal. She completely disappears into the role of Woo Young-woo, making every expression, gesture, and line feel incredibly authentic. It's one of those performances that you forget you're watching an actress because she becomes the character. This role alone proves how versatile and talented she is, and it's no surprise that she received so much praise for it.

The case-of-the-week format keeps every episode fresh, while the main story gradually develops the relationships between the characters. The supporting cast is also fantastic, especially Kang Tae-oh and Kang Ki-young, whose chemistry with Park Eun-bin makes every scene enjoyable. The whale imagery, cinematography, and soundtrack are beautifully used to reflect Young-woo's perspective, giving the drama a unique identity.

That said, the drama isn't completely flawless. Some of the legal cases in the second half aren't as memorable or emotionally impactful as those in the beginning, and a few side characters could have received more development. The romance is sweet, but some conflicts are resolved a little too conveniently. There has also been discussion about the show's portrayal of autism, with some viewers feeling that Young-woo represents a "genius savant" stereotype rather than the broader diversity of autistic experiences.

Even with those minor flaws, this drama remains an unforgettable experience. It's warm, inspiring, funny, emotional, and filled with lovable characters. Every episode left me smiling, and Park Eun-bin delivered one of the finest acting performances I've seen in any Korean drama. This is one of those rare series that deserves all the praise it received.

When the Cunning Meets the Shrewd

Lets meet Shen Hexi the resurrected shrewd and ruthless woman, and Xiao Huayong the forever frail and cunning crown prince. Both needed to tread the jagged path of the court and palace and learnt to dabble between what they intend people to see of them, and what they really are. Both are very calculative and strategically crafty. Shen Hexi is a commandery princess summoned by the emperor to the capital from the Northwest frontier to marry a prince. She sets her objective in stone right from the start, to marry a prince who would guarantee the safety of herself and her clan, one who would never have their power hungry interests clash with the survival of her family. Although she found the delicate crown prince counting days to his end to fit this role, the crown prince found himself drowned in the love for Shen Hexi, and contemplate whether to satisfy his greed by marrying her to spend the remaining short years he has on his life with, or avoid her from becoming a widow and face palace intrigue all alone altogether, all while he is investigating about the real culprit behind his poisoning when he was a child.

I am always a sucker at harem power struggle and this show has one of the most satisfying inner palace face-off ever. The FL being an extremely shrewd and ruthless right from the start makes sure no one could trample her after being resurrected into She Hexi’s body. She does not need a hero to swoop her off her feet and fend dangers for her, because she strategically lays her groundwork before going into any fight at all. She doesn’t need to wield a spear or a sword, all she needed is to grasp the will of the people around her, a true political heroine. Meng Ziyi excelled in this, since she’s had a share on playing similar role in Blossom, though Shen Hexi is, in my opinion, waaay better than Dou Zhao when it comes to ruthlessness. She set clear objectives and boundaries, lets people know and understand this, and she never gets swayed by smooth-talking, pleading or threatening.

This is the second time that i saw He Yu and he carried the ML character really well. I am actually surprised to realize he was actually Furong Jun from Legend of Shenli. I definitely did not recognize him until I checked out his MDL page after i finished the show. Anyway, the Crown Prince is written to be extremely meticulous, crafty and intelligent, but what I like the most is how he manoeuvred around his siblings to eliminate their chances at FL’s hand. And i totally love the fact that he’d act coquetishly with Fifth Prince Xiao Changqing at some point of the show despite being at odds with each other, acting like a real baby brother with that little cheeky voice,”Help me bandage the wound, it’s painful, brother,” 😆 or “brother, i am hungry,” and then provoke him the next minute. He’s like the youngest brother who is showered with most love by the parents and goes off playing pranks with his lesser-favoured brothers and shout victim to get away. This character is very shameless, be it using his illness to curry favour or get away with anything, or gaslighting people to get them go with his plans. It’s honestly a fun amid grey flag character. I can’t particularly stand possessive ML so I am glad he snapped out of it quickly after or else i might have dropped this. It’s amazing how in sync the Crown Prince is with Shen Hexi once theyre together. And how he carefully wove his intricate net of people all over the place so she would never run out of help to maneouvre around the court is exceedingly brilliant and sweet at the same time.

Though I must say the star couple is actually the side couple Captain Bu Shulin and Vice Minister Cui Jinbai. To see the reverse-courting by Captain Bu on Cui is totally hilarious, especially when she did it only to use him as a shield against the courting from the noble ladies. The fact that she’s only after him for something non romance-related is fun to watch, especially when her male disguise is very convincing and she looks nothing feminine at all. Her height and sharp, chiselled facial feature contributed a lot to this, which most actresses who have played cross dressing roles lack of. The voice didnt sound deep enough for a man but she really did better than most cross-dressing actress i’ve seen so far, though i am not too sure if she dubbed her own voice or not. She also maintained a masculine mannerism throughout the disguise and never faltered even once. I am very impressed with the actress Fan Shuiqi, and I think she really stole the show from the mainleads with her outstanding male impersonation performance. And how this character tries to get away when Cui finally reciprocated afterwards was even more hilarious. They’re really fun to watch.

There are a lot of familiar faces here, i spotted those who played Xia Jingshi from Fated Hearts, Yu Qianqian from Pursuit of Jade, Gu Yu from Vendetta of An, Shen Muyue from Legend of Shenli. I am ecstatic to see Jeremy Xu who played Gu Mudan from Whispers of Fate and most recently Peter Ho who also played FL’s father in Key to the Phoenix Heart which I dropped right before starting on this show. They all gave an exceptional performance and I adore them very much.

There were more romance scenes than action/physical fights here, and there wasn’t as much palace intrigue as I anticipated, too bad for that. Not sure how the novel went, but I felt that there was so much more potential for this show to expand of the court power struggles and physical fights by the seemingly-delicate-but-actually-skillfully-strong crown prince. I just feel that it could have been a more engaging plot than it really is, instead of focusing on the main couple courtship which was really boring to me. But on a side note, i liked both characters enough not to use the FF button too much. 😆

Regardless, I enjoyed this show.

Actually a good drama unlike the others says

Tbh, I was hesitant to watch it because of the reviews lol, but after I finished the drama, I think, overall, it was good.

Especially if you want to watch a story about people's lived experiences, particularly those who have been mentally challenged. It's a story of awareness and awakening.

Others might not appreciate it, but personally, I appreciated the storyline for raising awareness about mental health. It still felt relatable.

However, I just don't like the fact that almost all of the characters have mental health issues aside from the doctors. I wish they had added a character who brings a little sunshine or acts as a mediator, instead of having only the two main leads lifting each other up.

Still, it ended well. They were able to resolve their own issues, and I also liked how it encouraged people to consult a doctor if they're experiencing similar struggles.

WHAT AM I WATCHING

I see how some people would like this, but every about this series was so WEIRD.
The plot overall wasn’t so bad, but the script ruined most of the experience. All of the characters (except for the MC) were despicable, and their personalities were all over the place.
Every episode felt like pure peer pressure; I felt so bad for the MC.
“M” has to be the worst character of the bunch; he was highly unpredictable and used a slur multiple times.
You know when a piece of media is SO bad, to the point it becomes entertaining? That’s how I feel about this.
Overall don’t recommend unless you have nothing else left to watch.

what a family truly is. Is it the blood connection? Or is it the bond built?

Like Father, Like Son is yet another example of why Japanese storytelling and cinema should be studied. Japan never shied away from taking on hard topics and delivering them beautifully.

So the story is hard! We have two families with completely different backgrounds and styles of life who find out their son is not their biological son, and due to the malicious work of a nurse, they have been switched at birth. Now, after 6 years, they have to decide whether to switch or not. This is like the biggest tragedy if you think about it. It might sound easy, like, "Let's just take the biological kid back," but there is another child you have loved until the last minutes and one you took care of since birth, loved, and cherished, who suddenly becomes a stranger. It’s not that simple. No matter what decision you take, you are losing someone important.

Ryota Nonomiya is described as a man who has always excelled at everything he did, and he expects the same from his son. We can see his frustration when his son is not delivering what he expects, and at times he is also very harsh with the kid. So finding out his son is not his biological child culminates in him with this idea that the perfect son he wanted couldn’t deliver because it was not his. Almost like all he could think in that moment was why it all made sense. His wife, on the other hand, is shattered, caught between the guilt of not being able to notice earlier and having to decide to let go of the son she loved so dearly for the last 6 years.

On the other hand, the Saiki family is also going through shock and pain, but it seems like their whole focus is on how much money they can get as compensation from the hospital. As a viewer, it’s almost like while the Nonomiya family is destroyed by the news, the Saiki family takes on it in a more positive aspect, and that’s where we really see the difference between the two families. Although the Saikis are not as wealthy and seem like they have so much on their plate, their kids love them dearly, and they are the happiest.

This is where the brilliance of the storytelling takes us: two completely different backgrounds and family dynamics. One is cold and strict, enveloped in shades of black and grey, while the other one is bright, like a summer day, surrounded by the noise of kids playing.

But this movie is not just about finding out what blood bonds mean; more about what truly a family stands for. Ryota, who grew up with the strong idea that blood ties are important and that having a successor was the pinnacle of his life as a man, is challenged for the first time with a choice: let go of the child he raised as his own or make space for his biological son, blood of his blood. This is where things get painfully relatable, and Ryota comes to terms with the understanding that what truly matters is not the blood, but who raised you. An example is when the two families meet, and Ryota notices his biological son and the father (Saiki) who raised him both have the habit of biting their drink straws;an important detail that foreshadows how little blood ties matter.

To sum up, this movie was a brilliant piece of work, and it will make you reflect on what a family truly is. Is it the blood connection? Or is it the bond built? This movie left me pondering what I would do if I found myself in this situation and left a sad lingering feeling. Honestly, I could go on and on about this, but I truly think this movie is so worth watching.
