Fascinating Watch

I never would have thought that watching people do math and other intellectual problems could be so entertaining. I'm a college dropout so seeing how intelligent those students were was truly fascinating. Loved the competition and the teamwork. Huge respect to every single participant, whether they lost or not, every round was well done. Hyunbin though stole my heart with not only his incredible, and I really mean INCREDIBLE brain, but the way he led with empathy, making sure to encourage his team all the time.

Started pretty good, but ended in a battlefield birth and total script collapse

This drama is the definition of a wasted opportunity. It earns a 3/10 solely because the first few episodes started off so strong. The initial chemistry between the leads was genuinely engaging and the setup promised a high-stakes, fast-paced political and medical thriller. Sadly, that momentum is completely destroyed as the show falls into the worst, most generic writing traps imaginable.
The pacing is abysmal. With only 22 episodes of 30 minutes each, the writers somehow managed to stall the main plot for three-quarters of the runtime. The villains are handed absurd amount of plot armor, operating with absolute luxury and impunity while the heroes suffer endless, agonizing setbacks without a single clean victory. The narrative cross into gratuitous misery, like revealing a character was tortured for eight straight years just to force stakes it never earned.
By the final stretch, all narrative logic and character consistency are completely thrown out the window. Major, foundational plot twists are treated with zero weight, such as the female lead discovering her own uncle massacred her bloodline, only to say a few hurried words and casually let him walk away. The political tension is faked in the final episodes by slaughtering random, completely un-introduced court officials just for cheap shock value.
The finale is an absolute fever dream of rushed, nonsensical soap opera tropes. You are forced to witness a consort throwing unearned attitude at the Emperor while her own father launches a bloody coup, culminating in her giving birth in the literal mud of an active battlefield. The plot completely surrenders to lazy writing by turning the Emperor instantly insane and having the male lead hack everyone else to death just to clear the board in the last ten minutes.
It is just barely watchable if you run it at double speed to get it over with, but it is ultimately a monumental failure of storytelling that completely insults the audience's intelligence. Save your time and skip this trainwreck.

"I can't see with my eyes but I can see with my heart"

Eye for an Eye was a short, low budget revenge film that punched and kicked above its weight. Another variation on a gifted blind swordsman (Zatoichi!), this wuxia version held its own even if it didn’t break new ground, just bones for the most part.

Blind swordsman Cheng Xia Zi is a successful “ghost killer” during the troubled days of the Tang Dynasty. He captures criminals with bounties on their heads, preferring to not pass lethal judgment on them. That changes when a friendly wine maker preparing for her wedding offers him a drink if he comes to the nuptials. Not long after, villains crash the party leaving family members dead and Ni Yan in disarray. Cheng had no desire to get involved but when the local magistrate betrays Ni Yan, he steps in and into a far deadlier and more complicated mess than he had expected.

Clocking in around 70 minutes, there wasn’t much room for character development. The women were particularly underdeveloped and mainly used as hostages or targets, often making stupid decisions. Cheng’s defining characteristic was his unwavering confidence in his ability to take on thirty-armed men. Initially he was happy to rely on his simple bone-crunching abilities that left fighters somewhat disabled. When the bad guys stepped over the line, the demon in Cheng awoke unleashing a powerhouse unafraid of facing down an army. Xie Miao did an excellent job of selling the action. The fights were exciting, increasingly merciless, and well-choreographed. If you don’t care for wire work or one man against many, this film won’t be for you. It for certain stretched the limits of believability, but going into a film about a blind swordsman is probably the first clue that reality is going to be on vacation.

Eye for an Eye had its narrative problems yet managed to still be entertaining largely due to swift moves that actually connected and incapacitated the enemy. As previously mentioned, once the demon was released, opponents stopped hobbling off. The snowy finale was reminiscent of an old children’s joke, “What’s black and white and red all over*” with a decidedly different punchline. Worth an hour of your time if you enjoy martial arts films and keep your expectations low.

Trigger warnings: Sexual assault that was more graphic than what usually occurs in Chinese films, but no nudity. There was a fair bit of slicing and dicing and decapitations. No graphically spewing blood.

*Answer to the joke---A newspaper (red/read). Only “old” people will know what those are, ask your mom or grandmother. lol

Human Emotions

I watched the drama Our Beautiful Summer and it showed that suicide is not really due to having less people around you who love you. There may be many people who love you, but loneliness isn't a lack of people; it is something only an individual would understand and it is very personal. The character who died had a lovely family and brothers who loved her, but they weren't able to express it; despite that, she was smiling and fighting at the same time, and her struggles were not noticed not because they didn't care, but because they are humans too and human emotions are complex. She knew her family loved her, yet she wasn't able to think about those who loved her; she never blamed them and even in her letter told her mother not to blame herself, showing how one actually goes through these uncontrollable emotions. Similarly, the girl who became a friend-sister to the triplets had a mother who loved her but wasn't there when needed, and she was saved by one of the brothers. Their realization made them regretful and they all responded differently to the accident even though all were feeling guilty; it is only when someone is gone that we start to connect the dots which otherwise would have remained invisible. What actually helps a depressed person is an unexpected thing that makes you feel life is at least worth living; the triplets became the reason for the girl’s change and, while they weren't trying to replace their sister, saving her helped them heal because they were finally able to protect someone.

One thing is certain: these are the worst kisses in BL history!

I’m genuinely trying to give this drama a chance because I enjoy Chinese BLs. Unfortunately, this one has been very difficult to get through. The story itself is fairly decent, but the editing and directing are among the worst I’ve ever seen.

The actors are interesting and have potential, but they are being terribly mismanaged. Such a shame.

I’ll try to continue a little longer, but I’m already almost halfway through the drama, and everything so far feels like complete chaos. The editing is awful, and it’s such a waste of good actors.

So Funny!

I haven’t been this hooked on a drama in a while. this drama is sooo funny and the music choices are top tier. If you’ve seen the latest episode you know what I’m talking about 😂

The chemistry with the leads seems so natural and the plot is pretty good for how funny the show is. I’m excited to see what the next few episodes will be like.

I appreciate that the show is subtly showing healthy ways to deal with difficult topics. It’s not toxic positivity but real life routines catered to someone.

High Teir Gay Romance and bittersweet slice of life

I was right! What an amazing and beautiful gay romance.

I was hooked from the beginning to the end. The acting, cinematography, and writing were superb and heartfelt.

Overall it was a bittersweet experience about love, loss, life’s struggles, sacrifices, and the bonds we form.

People who just skipped through for kissing or NC scenes are missing out on one of if not the best, BL/gay stories I have seen in a long while. One of the few where I was enraptured by the storytelling and didn’t find myself 2x or skipping through any scenes even ones that were focused on the secondary characters.

It definitely fits in the vein of other amazing stories like Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo or Blonde and Blue Eyes. If anyone doubts the romance they are missing the whole thing and clearly didn’t watch it through nor paid attention to the last episode which clearly lays it out. Or are they being disingenuous and obtuse about depictions of romance since there’s no “fan service” or dated stereotypical cliches?

Also, as a follower of Christ, I absolutely loved the characterization of Johan’s faith, the symbolism of God’s hand at work in their lives, and the foreshadowing of the main lead’s future together. From the sculptor who mentions liberation from the sins/struggles of life, the bathing scene, the cryptic elder’s words to Ryu, how by chance Ryu met Johan, and by “fate” becoming the perfect person to care for and love Johan… refreshing especially in this genre.

Oh and the closing lines was a perfect capstone for this beautiful journey.

“There is only one you in this world”

Very few kdramas have made me cry like this. Holy moly was this show impactful! The expriences Yee-Jae went through in each body helped him really understand and value his life. Each episode was either filled with action or deep emotional scenes. The actors really did an amazing job that kept me hooked each episode. Overall 10/10 if you want a deeply impactful but action packed drama. I am a bit confused though about the ending…. If he was given a restart, wouldn’t that mean the serial killer and that CEO are unstoppable?? Is there like alternate versions of Yee-Jae in different bodies working at the same time? I guess it’s up to interpretation…

BossNoeul are one of my faves!

Okay, I pretty much loved this one. The acting was soooo good. I got glimpses of Rain and Payu in Phu and Cir but they were also so different. Phu was a calm, gentle spirit (Rain was a chaos gremlin). Cir was emotional and hyperfocused (Payu was controlled).

The story was a bit everywhere. What was the point of that white room if it wasn't...real? And the whole situation with that psychotic woman who treats her sons as property. Like, wtf? That was a WILD plot point.

I thought Jin and Wim had soooo much potential but they weren't flushed out enough. They could've elevated this to 10 stars, but alas.

Those NC scenes were pretty dang good! Honestly, It's so refreshing watching bls explore sexuality more in depth. These actors make it look natural.

Very cute second chance, co-habitation romcom

Watched this drama 4-5 years back for the first time and then have rewatched it many times since then but I am unable to find it anywhere now. So came here to see where we can watch it and saw that it had such poor rating! So thought I would add a review for one of my fav dramas. :)

Anyway, so coming to the review, I would say if you like cute romcoms with likable leads and bearable second leads who don't act like obsessed psychos, then you will like this too.

Story: Basically it's about 2 childhood friends /sweethearts who got married way early, when they were 17/18 yrs old and divorced almost immediately for silly chilish reasons. Then they meet again after 5-6 yrs and how they rekindle their relationship gradually is the crux of the story.

Ml is a lazy rich kid with kind heart who is sent by his dad and grandad to build a resort in their old hometown island where FL resides. Fl is a veterinary college dropout and takes care of villager's horses in her ranch for a fee. Fl's family had got scammed of their horse ranch/home and the scammer sold it along with adjacent areas to ML's company which he is unaware of.

So after finding out the truth he agrees to give back her property to her for free but she refuses and instead they make a deal that she will help him get consent letters from the village people who are opposed to the resort one by one and will also pay for the property in installments. And due to certain circumstances he ends up staying at her home which she shares with her younger sister.
So we get a co-habitation romance too where ML and FL act like 2 cute bickering bunnies for most of the time! 😁

The 2nd leads are nice characters too. In the starting they actually show us the budding romance between 1st leads and 2nd leads but due to various reasons that doesn't work out and as time goes by our main leads rediscover their love for each other.

Overall, the way they end up with each other is a very satisfying watch. We even get funny cute jealous scenes too! 😁 It basically has everything you need in a good romcom! Btw It's also called as Paradise Ranch. So if you find the drama anywhere, then surely give it a try!

Soul Mate feelings and emotional healing

Soul Mate is a very delicate, melancholic, and deeply emotional drama, more focused on feelings and emotional healing than on the classic romance full of fanservice or dramatic twists.

The story follows Ryu, a former hockey player haunted by guilt, and Johan, a Korean boxer who is just as broken by life. Their meeting in Berlin becomes the beginning of a bond that spans years, distance, and personal trauma.

One of the drama’s strongest points is its atmosphere: silences, glances, and small everyday gestures build a relationship that feels authentic and deeply human. It’s not a loud or fast-paced series; it has a contemplative and often painful rhythm, but that is exactly what makes it so powerful.

The performances by Hayato Isomura and Ok Taecyeon are probably the highlight of the show. They manage to convey vulnerability, loneliness, and affection even without long dialogues. Johan, in particular, is a character who stands out because of how tough he appears on the outside while being incredibly fragile inside.

The supporting characters are also well written, especially Arata and Sumiko, who add emotional depth to the story instead of simply existing as side characters.

Soul Mate focuses much more on emotional connection and the idea of two souls finding each other.

Overall, it’s a drama that stays with you. It leaves behind a mix of sadness, comfort, and nostalgia. More than just a love story, it feels like a story about broken people learning how to keep living through each other.

I am glad I didn't listen to negative reviews and I decided to watch. It was epic, it was really nerve-wracking. I wish I am just watching it for the first time.
Great acting. Pooh's acting has gotten so solid, including Pavel. I love the other pairing, the chemistry blend, the acting, no over the top scenes everything was just right into perfection. I love the songs as well. I could go on about the series.
The thrill and everything. I love this series, it's been a while I truly enjoyed series, since ThamePo and Reset, Moonlight Chicken and a few. Goddess bless you from death, has entered my charts of favorites. I will definitely watch this again.
Thank you this series.

The Trauma Olympics

My 2nd review here on MDL, and I just felt I needed to write down my thoughts. It is supposed to be short and sweet (unlike my 1st review lol, which was supposed to be short) but who knows

Disclaimer: These are my opinions, so don't take anything personally. We don't have to agree, and I'm not here to argue with anyone. Just dropping my honest thoughts on something I very much like.

First off, I just want to say Namkoong Min is a fantastic actor; his chilling performance in this drama is reminiscent of King Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones. I have never hated a main villain the way I hated Nam Gyu-man in this drama since Joffrey; he literally carried this entire drama on his back. Oh my, I wanted the nastiest death to happen to him. That's how much I hated these characters. What that shows is how perfectly they acted their roles and immersed themselves in them, so credit where it's due to them. Now that's out of the way, let's get to the chicken.

Why I called this the "trauma Olympics" is because the show is just a collection of "How much can we traumatize the main character as well as the viewers rooting for him?" Every episode was just me waiting for the inevitable "string of misfortunes." It's not for people that want happy things each episode because we don't get those till the last five episodes. So it's 15 episodes of constant "string of misfortunes" for our ML, Seo Jin Woo. The writer didn't hold anything back and poured every misfortune in the kdrama book on him, lol, but he persevered and got his lick back.

The drama is a revenge drama, where Seo Jin Woo tries to get revenge on the people in Inho's group, namely Nam Gyu-man, for framing his father. Initially while watching this, I thought it was going to be him trying to get his father off death row as well as putting the actual criminals behind bars, but when his father died, I quickly understood the route the writer wanted to take the show in. Our ML suffering on his way to vengeance, which he did get, and OH, it was very satisfying.

I've been a fan of Park Min Young since Healer, and I did like her performance in this, but I don't get the people that said she wasn't needed in this drama. I vehemently disagree because, without her, I don't think he would've accomplished his mission. She was his rock and emotional support throughout, especially with his Alzheimer's disease. YES, like I said earlier, they poured every misfortune playbook at our ML.

After watching Park Sung Woong in Man to Man, I took interest in his dramas because he is a very good actor as well. He didn't disappoint in this; it was very good, and I liked his character arc in this one. Also liked the good cop bad cop vibe he had going with Jin Woo; he seems to like bromance to be a thing in his drama (2 for 2 now in his dramas i've watched.)

Then we come to our man of the hour, Nam Gyu Man, an insufferable prick with anger issues. Just wanted to punch him in the face anytime he got on screen 😅 but he was fantastic as the main villain because I absolutely loathed him. He did get his just reward after he was sentenced to death. I also liked the way his final arc was handled because it was fitting the way he went out, a coward's way, because of the way he was portrayed throughout the entire show. A coward that hid behind Daddy and his money/power. A fitting end for such a character. I was a fan after watching The Veil, where he played a good character, but I didn't think I'd enjoy him more as the villain, a nice and welcome surprise.

The rest of the cast aren't worth mentioning like that; nothing noteworthy. Nam Gyu-man's sister was just a spoiled brat airhead till the latter part of the show; the dad was a typical Korean archetype business-before-family type character. Then the Outskirt Law Firm members, the typical supporting cast, literally. They all played their roles very well.

All in all a very good show, an 8.5/10 for me all because of Nam Gyu-man, by the way. So if you're going into this because you came here to see Yoo Seung Ho as Jin Woo, then prepare to be slightly disappointed because the one that carried it was Namkoong Min. This is not me saying his was bad or anything; his performance was good as a lead, but he didn't carry the show for me; that was all Gyu-man. So, prepare to enjoy his performance as the villain. Also if you're into—as my friend would call it—"suffer porn," then this is the drama for you.

Thank you for reading my long-winded review (which was supposed to be short 😅 again), but I hope this was able to help you.
