Watch if you are a fan of Xiao Zhan

For background context, this drama was highly anticipated for me ever since the trailer came out for it because I am a fan of the original novel and Xiao Zhan. And the trailer combined with the OST really brought out the wow factor further. So while I enjoyed it in general because I am already a fan, it might not be as enjoyable to someone who does not have any prior understanding of the original novel, and I would recommend The Land of Warriors (2024) sequel instead.

Pros
- Stellar acting from Xiao Zhan, for each arc of his journey. It was a treat to see the progress of Tang San from his adolescence (maybe Xiao Zhan looked a little too mature for that segment, but the youthful exuberance he portrayed made it reasonable), to the period spent in Shrek academy and up till the final confrontation towards the end of the show. Be it moments of insecurity and loneliness in his childhood days, to his underlying commitment to justice, the dedication and protection of the FL, to his rage and pain at the antagonist that was charged with emotional intensity - every scene was a treat to watch.
- Evocative and highly complementary OSTs, it was an especially nice touch that some of the OSTs were sung by the cast members too (Xiao Zhan, Wu Xuanyi, Liu Run Nan).

Cons
- Not sure how much the budget for the drama was but....the set design looked quite shabby, and some costumes looked drab and run-down. Like it was to the point where the cast looked somewhat ludicrous,
- The plot is quite different from the original story, and while it was engaging enough, it felt abit jarring because there was not as much context provided within the show itself. So the changes in plot felt somewhat jarring and not cohesive to the story.
- Felt that the romantic chemistry between the leads was a bit lacking...but then again they were in the stage where it was more of a 'sibling' relationship so...perhaps it was more of a directorial decision and not about the acting skill.

Tldr, watch only if you like the leads or the original novel, and if you do not mind moderate changes to the plot. If not the production quality really leaves much to be desired at times and the watch time can be better spent elsewhere, lol.

Another disappointing general for Ryan Cheng

Another great story and cast ruined by horrendous acting of the female general. In both legend of the female general and here in shadow love - wrong casting, bad acting..I am sorry but generals do not act that way:

- you go into battle without a sword?
- unable to do minimal strategy? Freeze?
- wilting flower tactics? Really?
- wearing diamonds in a military camp?
- adolescent temper tantrums .. in a general?
- you want world peace but you immediately threaten a child with a sword?
- I see the obsession with ultra thin/ borderline anoerexic female actresses but doesn’t the director think it might be stretching it that the sword itself is almost as heavy as the woman?

And legions of men, warriors respect this and follow into war?

The rest of the cast are great. But this actress in shadow love and the one in female general are beyond disappointing.

These show are fantastically written- I love that we are seeing women as generals and leading armies - but can we make it at least believable?

Or is it on purpose? These actresses play generals that are not believable so we are subconsciously told that a female general could never happen…

This Series on my Mind and i Need Season 2

The series is really good, but i wanted a proper ending with a lot of scenes and episodes. What started as a curious click turned into a full-blown obsession ,one that had me counting down to Fridays like my life depended on it . And now, after nine emotionally charged episodes, I'm sitting here with that all-too-familiar post-drama void, desperately refreshing for news of a second season.I'm not usually the person who gets obsessed with side characters, but the second couple (Lu Guangming and... well, you know who you are) had me in a chokehold.

Ultimate Rewatchable K-Drama

This is such a classic. I bet this was the start of most people's obsession with K-dramas and full proof that not every romance drama needs overly detailed and perfectly executed writing. Sometimes, all we need is a simple yet well-done romance that can make you laugh on the days when you need it.

I appreciate the comedy and the storyline. Though, despite rewatching it a thousand times, I still don't get why the background story is necessary.

It can make you cringe in the best way possible, and I'm a sucker for the boss x secretary trope. They have the best chemistry ever, to the point that I was hoping they'd get together in real life lol.

The Cost of One Hesitant Moment

Tipped off by a mysterious caller that a murder was about to take place, two police officers rushed to an old residential building. Splitting up to search the area, rookie cop Leng Xiao Bing stumbled onto the scene just as the crime was unfolding. Face to face with the killer, fear and hesitation paralysed him. Before he could pull the trigger, he was knocked unconscious.

The consequences were devastating. Xia Mu's beloved teacher and guardian, Xia JinLan, was brutally murdered. Hidden in the attic, young Xia Mu witnessed the horrifying aftermath — the policeman entering the apartment, followed by the exit of the psychopathic serial killer. In the chaos, the second officer also lost his life.

Seventeen years later, Xia Mu graduates top of his class from the police academy and joins the very department investigating the unsolved serial murders. Still haunted by the tragedy, he confronts Leng Xiao Bing, demanding to know why he failed to act that night and save the woman Xia Mu regarded as a mother. The trauma of the past, combined with a more recent event, has pushed Xia Mu dangerously close to the edge.

Enter Shen Yu, an intelligent and enigmatic psychologist assisting with a case. She is the daughter of Shen Haiyang, a doctor who mysteriously disappeared around the time of Xia JinLan's murder. Shen Yu's suspicious behaviour leads Xia Mu to believe she is protecting her father, who is now a suspect and may still be in hiding. Determined to clear his name, Shen Yu takes increasingly reckless risks, gradually entangling herself in deception and making herself appear complicit.

After seventeen years of silence, a new murder emerges bearing chilling similarities to the old cases. Even more disturbing, a set of skeletons estimated to be 15–20 years old is discovered, opening an entirely new line of investigation. The revelation confirms one terrifying truth — the serial killer has never stopped lurking in the shadows.

Zhao Liying delivers an outstanding performance as Shen Yu. Intelligent, manipulative, and morally ruthless. Shen Yu is not an easy character to like, yet Zhao Liying portrays her with such conviction that I found myself simultaneously fascinated and frustrated by her desperate determination to protect her father. It is another reminder of why she remains one of the strongest actresses in Chinese drama today.

I came across comments complaining that the drama lacked romance. Interestingly, I heard similar criticism directed at Whispers of Fate. That made me wonder why some viewers consider romance essential in every story. Romance can certainly add flavour, but it is not a requirement for a compelling drama. Who Is the Murderer thrives on psychological tension, guilt, trauma, and moral ambiguity rather than romantic distraction.

Modern Chinese thrillers are not usually my preferred genre. Many tend to feel overly cautious, restrained, and somewhat sterile, often sacrificing realism in the process. This drama still carries some of those traits, but its layered mystery and intriguing twists kept me thoroughly engaged. The story constantly shifts your suspicions, and just when you think you have pieced everything together, it quietly unsettles you again.

It may not be perfect, but I found it gripping, emotionally heavy, and surprisingly addictive. A highly recommended watch for viewers who enjoy dark psychological mysteries rather than romance-driven storytelling.

This drama should be reframed as the Tale of an Antagonist - her character arc was stronger

I had not watched Huang Bo dramas in months and with the slow updates of Chinese vertical dramas on MDL catalogue, I decided to watch this one. I could immediately write a review after completing the series and gosh I was letdown.

What I liked:
1. ML's grandfather - Wow, he was the best character in this drama. Never once believed the antagonist's words because he could sense her true colours. I also liked that he was never pushy with ML.
2. ML characterisation - He was love-brained. He couldn't get over FL even after 5 years. I forgave him for marrying the antagonist because she trapped him. He didn't get much screentime though.
3. SML - He too had character development. Not purely evil, there were moments of compassion.
4. Ending - I liked how SML & antagonist characters were wrapped up. That police arrest was cleverly done.
5. Acting - The actress who played the antagonist gave the best performance in this drama. She also had good chemistry with the actor who played SML.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonist - The antagonist is the main character - she was given too much screentime. Her character also had a good development that you could see that she was kind at one point i.e. not purely evil.
2. FL characterisation - She was weak. I understood that she had no memories of her past but c'mon, where were her instincts? She didn't fight back when bullied and this stayed until 75% of the drama. She was gullible too.
3. Romance - The secondary couple had more romantic scenes than the main couple. Huang Bo can do great kissing scenes but I think Yang Cheng Lu wasn't comfortable because there was no close up of their kissing scenes and they were hasty too.
4. Acting - Yang Cheng Lu gave a bland performance that you'd forget about her after watching this drama. There was no chemistry between her and Huang Bo.

Favourite scene
When police came to arrest the antagonist

Adrenaline Rush every Ep

⭐ 8.5/10

I honestly didn’t expect “If Wishes Could Kill” to pull me in this much, but once the story starts unfolding, it becomes really hard to stop watching. The whole idea of a wish-granting app sounds exciting at first, but the drama slowly turns it into something disturbing and emotionally intense. Every wish comes with consequences, and that constant tension keeps you hooked.

One thing this drama does really well is the atmosphere. There’s always this uneasy feeling in every episode, like something terrible is about to happen. The countdown app, the psychological pressure, and the way the characters slowly lose themselves make the story feel darker and darker as it progresses. Hyeong Uk was definitely the standout character for me. His emotional scenes felt raw and believable, and watching his downfall was honestly painful in the best way.

I also liked how unpredictable the drama was. Just when you think things can’t get worse, the story somehow becomes even more chaotic. Some scenes were genuinely shocking, while others were emotionally heavy enough to stay in my mind long after finishing the episode. The background music and cinematography matched the mood perfectly and made the suspense feel even stronger.

That said, the drama does have a few flaws. The pacing slows down a bit in the middle episodes, and a few side characters deserved more development. There were also moments where certain character decisions felt frustrating or unrealistic. But personally, those issues didn’t ruin the experience for me because the main story and emotional impact were strong enough to carry the drama.

Prepare your Therapy

Double Helix is already exceeding my expectations. As a remake of A Round Trip to Love, it feels incredibly polished. Each scene is well-edited with beautiful transitions of the story that lets you bond and reason with the characters and story, the cinematography is superb. You can tell the production value is high even the OST and dubbing are decently good to me.

The story structure is very smart; it starts with their present day reunion and then moves into a flashback of their university days. The pacing is perfect by the end of episode two, the backstory is clear and easy to follow without feeling choppy.
What I love most is how natural it feels, you get to understand their story and bond with them in every detail you live each side's point of view which makes me feel more emotionally tied and invested that when something happens you feel like it's you who got punched. The acting from the leads is very good chemistry over the top, and even the side characters are played well which adds depth to the world.

When it comes to the characters development you can really feel it especially the innocence of their early relationship, and watching Lu Feng’s shift into a "protector" role development feels earned rather than sudden. While the original story is known for being quite dark and tragic, this version is starting off with a lot of heart and builds up darker and darker you'll get tangled up in an emotional rollercoaster and to those who were watching it while it was airing the fear and wait we felt were unbearable lol it’s a must-watch!

TW (spoiler): this series contains a lot of triggers so check out the tags under the synopsis if you need.

A well packaged short drama

I had a lot of fun watching this drama. It was certainly not something I expected. There are a lot of tropes likes "it's not what this looks like" and "accidental kiss" but keep watching. It keeps getting better and better.

Story revolves around a rich CEO that has a secret. If he holds someone's hand for more than 5 seconds, he will turn into them. It lasts 3 days which makes it extremely inconvenient but then he meets the FL and it turns out her kiss can turn him back instantly.

The story might sound silly but the drama definitely has fun with it and that's what makes it worth watching. There were parts that I couldn't predict which made me like it more.

Besides the main leads, I really liked the brother and the secretary. They did a good job with the story. At no point did I want to speed the story up. And there were even funny scenes I replayed because of how much I was enjoying the drama.

There are minor flaws here and there but worth watching! Do give it a shot.

Good premise with a strong start

I've been really exhausted of the whole reincarnation or transmigration theme and was wary of attempting this particular series for the reason. But thankfully, the reincarnation aspect wasn't deterring particularly I think because it wasn't another one of those modern day office worker who gets sent back into history. At least this one is within the same time period.

The plot was quite intriguing in the beginning and the concept that the Fl and ML lead completely different lives previously was actually very appealing as well as the way fate linked these two strangers together. It was also nice to see a pretty competent FL who stayed steady through the series although they still placed a slightly too heavy of an emphasis on her role. And as for reviewers who criticize the ML for not being as capable, they likely haven't experienced severe trauma before. I praise the FL for her abilities but her painful experiences pale in comparison to the ML which is why they actually do make a great match. He has been betrayed in the worst of ways and has experienced heavy loss back-to-back but yet was still incredibly capable on his own even before he met her. As the FL mentioned, he's the type who directly faces on his foes instead of going the roundabout manipulative way. And she is someone who couldn't trust men anymore because of her parents astray relationship. She offered him compassion which eased his anger and he opened up her trust. Their skill-sets combined is what makes them formidable.

Although the underlying story was decent, the plot did feel draggy at times and the dialogues between the main couple started to feel repetitive. The dialogue and scenarios also started to slowly get more corny compared the strong start in the beginning. Because of this, I started to disconnect emotionally towards the latter half. I think if they had focused more on the supporting characters and their backgrounds instead of so much screen time of them just hanging out... it could have really been elevated.

Nevertheless, it's a still pretty good watch for those who enjoy a strong couple who strategize together against their foes and have run out of other series within this micro-genre to try.

Good story

This is my first time watching a Taiwanese drama and I really enjoyed it . The storyline is very interesting and creative and holds the viewers attention well. I loved the characters and the friendship/family vibes throughout the show. The only character I wasn't crazy about is the FL whom I found quite annoying and totally unrealistic. She was supposed to be portrayed as a spoiled, very, very naive, kind girl who was educated in the US, but instead she came across as a slow witted, low IQ, dumb person behaving like a three year old with her " mommy, mommy, mommy" ridiculousness. It appears that the actress couldn't grasp the idea of playing a naive (not dumb)cute, charming and likeable, interesting character. Instead we got a very, very bland personality along with a very bland appearance and no redeeming qualities She became a bit tolerable towards the end showing a little bit more spine and character. that should actually have been played since the beginning. I have deducted one point from my rating because I think the FL should have been cast to a bit more experienced actress. who would have been able bring an interesting, likeable character to the role. Actually , I think that the FL's best friend (toned down character) would have been a better choice for the FL role. I also didn't see much chemistry between the FL and ML lead to be called a true, believable romance.
Otherwise, I truly liked all the other characters/actors and my all time favorite is the boys'mother. What a cute lady she is! The music and scenery was awesome and memorable. Overall, it's a good watch and thank you for the entertainment and your hard work. Bravo!

LOVE

I really loved this K-drama. The story felt very beautiful and memorable. The acting was really good, and you can genuinely feel the love between the main characters, which made their romance very believable.

I have to say the secondary romance was a bit boring, but it was balanced out by the main couple, which carried the story. There are both happy and sad moments, but the ending didn’t disappoint and it managed to keep me hooked until the very last episode.

I enjoyed every single episode.

basic

Honestly, this K-drama doesn’t really have anything that makes it stand out. Even though I didn’t dislike it, it feels a bit underwhelming compared to other ones I’ve watched. The story is okay and it’s not boring, but it doesn’t leave a strong impression or bring anything particularly unique.

The actors were good, but I feel like the story could have been better developed. They could have gone deeper into the characters and their relationship, because at times their connection felt a bit weak and not fully convincing.

Overall, it’s watchable, but it stays short in impact when you compare it to other K-dramas with more interesting plots, deeper characters, or stronger emotions.

unique

really liked this K-drama because, even though the story can feel a bit cliché at times, especially with the love triangle, it still manages to be very engaging. You can really feel the strong connection between the characters, and the story goes deeper into their emotions, which makes it more meaningful.

It’s not a typical romance story. It includes a past storyline that adds an unexpected twist, which is what I mean by how the story suddenly changes direction and reveals something you didn’t see coming, making everything feel more unique and different. There are sad moments, happy moments, and scenes where you just want to scream or cry because of how intense everything is.

For me, it’s definitely worth watching if you want something emotional and captivating.

Easy to watch adaptation true to original story, with good visual atmosphere

Having read the manga, watched the donghua, and loved the first live action adaptation of Soul Land, this drama was a satisfying watch that was definitely closer to the original story than Douluo Continent (DC). First time watchers with no prior understanding of the story might be a little thrown off by the first episode, which kicks off in the middle of a fight, but stay invested and the plot plays out coherently after. But if you are like me, who really loved the original story and the donghua music, the opening of this drama was perfect, where the combination of the epic donghua OST, good CGI, decent visuals made me hooked from the get go.

Pros:
- I hate to admit this but I actually thought the chemistry between the leads here were better... (even though my personal bias is Xiao Zhan). The supporting cast also felt better/more appropriately casted here, be it in terms of cast chemistry, characterisation of their roles and even the way they were styled. Ma Hong Jun in DC was totally different from the original which was somewhat strange but Ma Hong Jun here was perfect (albeit thinner lol).
- Good plot pacing and plot that followed the original story closely.
- Way better set costumes and good CGI (but game-like, which might not be the preferred vibe for some people) that blended in decently and made the drama setting look much more immersive and enjoyable to watch.
- The drama-specific OSTs were not super memorable but were complementary to the show at least.
- *Liu Yuning appearing towards the end in his guest role cracked me up so much but he nailed it regardless!!

Cons:
- It's been a while since I've watched it and nothing particularly bad stuck out, other than taking some time to get used to the characters who are all played by completely different characters. And the ending only stops midway of the original story, in the midst of one the more interesting arcs so I do hope there is a sequel because the set visuals of that arc were beautifully portrayed in this drama.

Tldr if you loved the original novel/donghua, this would be a perfect watch! Also a great watch for anyone who enjoys fantasy themed shows and...likes games I guess lol (the fighting dynamics in the show is somewhat like that of games like Dota, LoL, Honor of Kings, MLBB etc.
