A drama that blossoms, stumbles, shrugs, and dusts itself off.

I went into this drama expecting a light historical comfort watch, and for a while, that’s exactly what it was. The first half moves with confidence — lively, chaotic, and anchored by a heroine who actually feels competent. I did my usual fast‑forwarding through the more irritating relatives, but the early episodes had enough spark to keep me invested. And then the grandmother died, and the show quietly misplaced its center of gravity. It’s almost funny how quickly the emotional architecture collapsed once she was gone. My engagement didn’t just dip — it slid.

Part of the problem is structural. This drama has too many family members, and while each one technically has a story, a good chunk of those stories are unnecessary detours. It’s like the writers were afraid of silence, so they filled every available inch with someone’s grievance, someone’s redemption, someone’s side quest. I get the intention — a sprawling household learning to rise together, set aside petty nonsense, and become an actual family — but the execution is bloated. Half the time I felt like I was watching a group project where everyone insisted on presenting their own slide.

And then there’s Hua Zhi’s meteoric rise. Look, I love a capable female lead, but the speed at which she single‑handedly drags her entire family out of ruin and becomes a business powerhouse is… generous. Inspirational, sure. Emotionally logical? Not always. But the show’s message is clear: strength isn’t inherited, it’s built. You fall, you get up, you fall again, you get up again — and the Hua family does exactly that. Repeatedly. Sometimes beautifully, sometimes exhaustingly.

The romance doesn’t help the pacing. Once the leads become a couple, the story slows instead of deepening. Their chemistry leans more “lifelong companions” than “epic lovers,” which is fine, but not enough to carry the back half. Meanwhile, the show throws five couples at us in rapid succession, and their backstories feel like filler. Ironically, the pairing that actually charmed me was Shao Yao and Shen Hao — she’s unexpectedly endearing, and their dynamic has more warmth than the main couple.

Where the drama genuinely shines is the action. Yan Xi’s fight scenes are sharp, clean, and beautifully choreographed. The final assassination sequence — one man against a hundred trained fighters — is the kind of set piece that makes you sit up a little straighter. It’s thrilling. It’s cinematic. And it almost makes you forget how bland he is outside of combat. Almost.

The emperor, however, is where my patience evaporated. He punishes the virtuous (Hua Zhi and her family) while rewarding the blatantly villainous (Hao Yue). He brings her into the palace as the “immortal envoy” after knowing she orchestrated an assassination attempt on his own nephew. Unbelievable — and not in the fun dramatic way.

In the end, Blossoms in Adversity is uneven but watchable. When it works, it really works. When it doesn’t, well… that’s what the FFWD button is for.

One Puurrfect Series

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

This was such an adorably cute series, but I may be a little bias because I am a cat person. Definitely watch this if you want a series that is not excessively dramatic. The script was mostly good with only a few weak aspects. However, it did a great job mixing the romantic, comedy, and drama aspects together. It also did a great job setting up the story and making you care about each character, including the cats. As for the romance, it had a nice even pace. The entire cast did an incredible job with their characters. The cinematography was good, but it had some weird shaky camera work in the first episode.

Random Note:

The location used for Tiger’s house was also used in the series “Rearrange” (Ek’s house), “Tale of Thousand Stars” (Tian’s parent’s house), and “SOTUS S” (Kongpob’s parent’s house).

The English subtitles were very good on GagaOOLala which is not always the case.

Completely off topic, but it was nice to see cats in a BL series that has the word in the tittle.

******Potential Spoiler Alert******

I only have one minor critique. They were not very consistent with Tiger’s allergy story aspect. He constantly mentions how he can’t touch cats, but then they show him petting and/or holding them throughout the series. I also think it’s odd that he was able to be in a room filled with cats. Again, this is only minor and did not stop me from enjoying the series.

You had me at cats...

This is a combination of a few of my favorite things, so maybe I can't write an unbiased review!

First, I love cats! A drama based in a cat cafe is calling my name. It's cute and cutesy. Everyone had fair warning of the silliness to come right there. I'm here for it.

Second, I'm a kifujin. So now we have cats in a cat cafe with men kissing? Yeah, let's do this. Who knows the Japanese word for old cat lady that watches yaoi?

Third, while I'm not the biggest fan of all the ships, I do enjoy this one. They can convincingly do hot and sweet. This was such a silly story but their portrayal was never cringe. Good job, guys!

Honestly, I probably wouldn't watch this a second time. But I'm glad I watched it the first time around. I like dramatic, emotional, intense BLs too, but sometimes you just need a cleanse. This was perfect for me! Happiness restored!

Guilt, Grief, and....Cats??

I will start out with the fact that this is definitely a biased review - as a big fan of First and Khao (and cats, I suppose), I don't think I can give a very critical review of this. Is the premise stupid? Yes. Is the script and cinematography great? No. Did I enjoy every single episode? Absolutely. It's clear to me that they had no clue what they wanted the tone of this show to be - truly, this is a story about a son who feels guilty about the death of his mother, and with no way to make it up to her, feels this guilt as a weight he can't lift. And somehow, they thought the best backdrop for this story was a cat cafe and a debt collector that can talk to cats. It's stupid, but actually provided some balance to the heavy points of the show.

Tiger (First) is a debt collector, or rather the son of a debt collector, who just can't seem to get money from his favorite debtor: Meow, the owner of a cat cafe. Even though Tiger is allergic to cats, he still loves to visit. However, after some medical issues, Meow passes away, but manages to pass on her power to talk to cats over to Tiger. Lynx (Khao), Meow's son, hasn't been involved with her life very much these last few years, but returns after her death to deal with the logistics. He decides to run the cafe himself, despite his issues with his mom (and her cats). Tiger agrees to help him get the place up and running again since he needs the debt payments, but really he just wants to get closer to Lynx.

I'm still genuinely so confused as to why they decided to mix a talking cat romcom with the guilt of being a bad son and the grief of losing a parent, but somehow it worked? I think most fans of these actors were well aware that this show was going to be sad regardless of how happy the premise sounded because - let's be honest - FirstKhao can't have a series where they don't cry! There were definitely aspects of the show that could have been handled better, especially the tone shifts during episodes. Still, this show kinda surprised me with how much I enjoyed it! It's one of FirstKhao's lighter shows, and it was fun to see them in some different roles than normal. If you're a fan, I'd give it a watch - but if you're not a fan of cats too, you might not like it.

Wasted potential

The idea of this was fun in theory, I don't understand why you'd have the female lead spend half the drama dating other men (even if they weren't actually real). Instead of developing the main romance, they just make her go on dates with fictional men while the male lead is just sitting around doing nothing. Thus you end up with a romance that doesn't feel earned and it just feels rushed and pretty boring tbh. I'm sorry, but her dating a copy of Park Kyung-nam doesn't make me buy her interest in the real guy more. I didn't buy that she fell for him. I guess I can accept him being into her all this time, but I just don't think they managed to sell the romance from her side.

The 2 leads had potential, they had some cute moments, but ultimately I just didn't care too much because of the stuff that happened in the first 6 or so episodes or more like, the stuff that didn't happen. It was just boring. I wasn't interested in watching her use that app, I just wasn't invested in those relationships since I knew they weren't gonna lead anywhere. That whole app bit should have been like a collection of short scenes of all the dudes, not entire episodes dedicated to them. Or maybe just 1 episode with an actual date to show how the app works properly. They showed soooo much of the first 2 dates that I found myself wanting to skip a lot despite actually liking those 2 actors that they cast. And the dates with the copy also bored me. Like I just wanted scenes with the real guy. I wanted to see her at work interacting with her actual love interest and it took ages until that happened.

Overall, I'd say this is a skip and I just don't think it works for me.

THIS DRAMA KEPT ME GLUED TO MY SCREEN, START TO FINISH!!

For me when the drama has a cast like this one, I know the story line will be good. Off and Gun never fail to deliver a style of acting, that is to me, pure Perfection. I began watching and could not wait until I could watch this to the ending, The turmoil between the actors living such a complex life of roller- coaster emotions and passion touched me deeply, and with the artist setting and burnout bar setting, I loved it, and will watch it again, I am sure. To me, this one was well worth a watch, it drew me in, I enjoyed it, and it did not let me go until the very end. A perfect ten from me.

Comfortable and Cozy

I enjoyed watching Shine on Me, but I don't think it's a 'perfect' drama.

Our two main leads were well cast and their acting was good, but I sometimes got the feeling that they were just being who they normally are as people instead of acting. Is that good or bad? I guess it depends on your point of view. Song Wei Long seemed confident in this role. In this series, he carries himself as someone who believes in his own abilities. Zhao Jinmai was also good as a young woman who starts out as someone unsure of herself and her place in the world and then grows to become a CEO . They were convincing as a couple, in my opinion. Both of them are good at using facial expressions to convey their feelings. There are some heart fluttering moments between them as the characters get acquainted with each other. Both of them handled the technical vocabulary well, and were able to present themselves as scientists and successful business people.

Unfortunately, the SML was a different story, but I don't think that was his fault, but rather that of the script. His character doesn't really have much to do except stand around and look upset. In fact, I began to wonder why the SML was even a part of the story except to show how greed can prevent someone from truly achieving happiness. A lot of his actions didn't make sense, and he didn't really have a huge impact on the story except to make the FL realize that the ML was a keeper.

The idea that greed is destructive was a common theme among our 'less desirable' characters. The FL's father and the ML's cousin both embody the idea that seeking profit at the expense of friends or family can create problems.

Some of the other secondary characters also suffer from inadequate writing, especially those from our FL's college years. The 'mean' girl who picks on the FL is written as shallow and rude at the beginning of the series. However, towards the end, she see the error of her ways.

The story is fairly basic and probably could've been told in fewer episodes if some of the solar energy jargon was eliminated. However, it seems that part of the purpose of the story was to point out China's growth in that area as well as other technologies. If the country has improved that much, good for them.

I have read a lot of reviews saying that the story is boring. I will admit that when I re-watched it, I skipped a lot of the PV jargon, (and I'm a former science teacher.). However, I thought the relationship between the main characters was refreshing in that they took their time getting to know one another and were honest with each other about their feelings and what they wanted. To me that's more realistic. I like the way they teased each other, and when they were finally together after working out the ML's misunderstanding over a case o mistaken identity, they were together for good.

I also liked that our two main characters were intellectual equals and both were driven to succeed in their chosen field. I appreciated that our FL lead is allowed to grow from a somewhat silly girl into a woman capable of running a major corporation.

The major time jump at the end of the drama is a little extreme, since there was no attempt to 'age' the actors, but it gives the viewers a happy ending.

If you want to watch something that doesn't require a huge amount of thought, you might enjoy this series. If you prefer a heavy hitting, serious series with a lot of angst, this probably isn't for you.

From Caricature to Self-Discovery

This is a fun, campy drama, yet it also tackles heavier themes that really resonated with me. I found myself enjoying the kitschy moments and not minding the heavy tropes, since it’s meant to be theatrical and outlandish—kind of like watching Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness. At the same time, I connected with the more cerebral arcs. It somehow transforms two-dimensional caricatures into a meaningful exploration of self-identity and breaking free from life’s constraints to become your happiest, truest self.

For a second season, this was actually pretty decent.
It was nice to see the characters grow and develop, which made the story feel more meaningful. Overall, an enjoyable continuation.

mmmm... no thank you

i know this is a short series made of literally 4 minutes long episode therefore I didn't come in with many expectations but.... I found literally nothing.

plot: not even sure.
a 27 years old girl meets her former classmates at a dinner party and then thanks To a McGuffin goes back in time.
ti avoid constant time skips she has to stick to her classmate... and I guess they fall in love (didn't make to that point).

I watched roughly 15 episodes and frankly was really bored.

the characters are not interesting. I keep calling the female lead su zai zai because she is playing the same character as in "flying towards you".

funny thing, the male lead here looks exactly like the one in "flying towards you".🤣

this character is the same old one of these dramas: algid, focused on studies, quiet, unapproachable and with a tragic family background.

the story per se is so formulaic that I wanted to see a fresh approach at least when it comes to the characters but that didn't happened.

if you saw any teen age drama you basically saw this one.

there is nothing engaging here, not particularly funny moments or bickering.

I dropped it because at episode 15 asking myself " why are you even here?".

would I recommend it?
I don't think so. I don't even what is there to be recommended tbh.
