Great Leads but disappointing Script

I am a huge fan of Esther Yu and loved her performance in Love Between Fairy and Devil, but unfortunately, this drama was a major disappointment. While Esther is talented, the storyline for this show felt incredibly uncomfortable, specifically the "step-brother" dynamic and the way her character was written to act so childishly. The plot felt forced, and the excessive, unnecessary kiss scenes didn't help the awkward pacing. Despite my love for the cast, the weak and frustrating storyline eventually made me drop the series. 😅💕

Just no

If you take out the rape in the beginning then it is a good little show but I gave it a 1. How can a woman fall in love with the rapist? And romanticizing rape is f'd up. If only the beginning was different.

The actors are good.
This is a good watch if you don't know the truth of how they met.

Mystery and Mastery ✨

I have watched every season of this series, I can confidently say it never disappoints. The lead actors are incredibly professional, portraying a brilliant team of investigators whose chemistry and friendship form the heart of the show; I’m even rooting for a happy marriage for Lu Lingfeng and Pei Xijun! The production quality remains top-tier, with exquisite Tang Dynasty costumes and makeup that bring the era to life. Each supernatural case is so gripping and imaginative that I find myself dreaming about the solutions. What truly moved me to tears were the emotional moments of celebration and the deep bond the group shares after every solved mystery. It is a perfect blend of suspense and soul. 🐉✨

A Masterpiece of History and Emotion

I just finished this incredible drama, and the acting was so powerful that it moved me to tears. The production is truly breathtaking, from the stunning costumes and makeup of the empresses to the beautifully captured Chinese history and architecture. Every actor was professional and talented, making the intense war and fight scenes feel truly engaging. With its amazing music and high-quality performances, this drama absolutely deserves an award! 💕✨

the main leads are gorgeous

giving this an 8/10 only cause the second ml plot got boring after a point i absolutely did not care about him and he took up too much space in the story.

but talking about the main couple... GORGEOUS. lin yusen was horrendous levels of down bad and i approve so wholeheartedly like if a man is not so deeply in love i do not want him. the progression of their relationship is so so so beautiful. they had me swooning at multiple points.

insane rewatch value too like im here for these two hot people falling in love. 🩷

absolutely gorgeous romance!

this is such a bingeable and rewatchable show. the main couple is absolutely chef's kiss. i adored them so much. the side characters are also well thought out and they moved the plot along nicely. i think my favourite side plot was that the fl's bestie dumped her good for nothing husband and started afresh like that arc was so nice to see.

the inclusion of the game into the main leads' story was absolutely sensational. loved how they used it to pull the story forward. i think we needed an extended epilogue though it would've been so fun to see that.

overall, a definite must watch!

// Up to your verdict, honestly.

/ Forgot that I haven't reviewed my first KDrama of 2026.
/ A lot of family drama was conveyed in this series. Most of them are quite a matured approach, I'd say.
/ Ending was really up to the audience's judgment.
/ First for me to watch a drama that is not from your typical KR TV network as they are known for movie productions and was just published by Netflix on a global catering.
/ So Min really upped her game in this one!

The story moves fast, kinda cringe, the leads are good looking, the villain is hilariously cartoonish, acting is okay, just your typical short vertical drama.

*Spoilers alert*
What bothers me the most is just the part when Pete was sick after getting locked in the freezer.
Why do Win took him home to cure him? They were literally in a hospital!?!?! Like, WHY? That was honestly so abstract it took me out, i was laughing at it for a good 5 minutes.
But WTF WAS THAT? Seriously. WTF!?

If a drama was ridiculous, it would be this.

Y'all are really lying about this drama. This must be targeted towards a much younger audience especially with the writing and acting and even then, it is an insult to the younger audience. Stand out acting being only from He Yu. I had to skip so much of the episodes. 8.5?!! Everyone is being really generous it seems.

So wholesome and healing

- I seriously liked every single contestant. All so likable and looked out for one another.
- I think the episodes are well paced and never boring. It was easy to get invested.
- Although there were many overlaps and unrequited feelings, everyone had very mature conversations about them
- My ghost ship were the two new students who were both the cutest ones in the bunch.
- No complaints

Some thoughts on the contestants:

Jiwoo
- My favorite from the moment she arrived. I find her super cute and brutally honest. I adore her.
- The cutest cry face ever :((
- Very patient and hands-on with the person she likes lol.
- She can make chemistry with any guy in the house
- In my opinion the best communicator. She’s very well-spoken. She turns people down really well.
- She’s most charming and playful with Jung hyun. My favorite date the entire show was their glamping. Could not stop laughing. Her witty and forward remarks kept flustering him and making him blush.

Se yeon
- I like how he managed his shift in feelings. Spoke to all parties involved.
- In terms of personality and vibe, one of my favorite guys. Giving princely energy.
- This man is disciplined. Always wakes up early to work out and keeps his bed tidy.
- Did everything right with Jiwoo. Never pressured her, always took initiative and pursued, and was overall respectful in the process. Even in rejection he was gracious.

Jung yun
- My personal pick looks-wise. Hes handsome and looks the manliest.
- Rooted for him and Jiwoo all the way, but he had an ego to him that I didnt like seeing. Especially when compared to his rival who was way more pleasant and accommodating to her.
- Probably the only one in the house that isnt a good communicator but its understandable.

Pyeong seok
- Such a cutie. Has the most melt-worthy smiles.
- Seriously good looking with his hair is slicked back. When he was working out with the other guys, he seriously looked the most attractive.
- House husband material. Always cleans and cooks in the house
- The greenest flag. Him and Heeji were the most unproblematic duo

Heeji
- SUCH A GOOD FRIEND. Girl’s girl and guy’s bro.
- The rock of this group. She took care & managed everyone so well.

Sang Won
- consistent, mature, respectful
- I like how he doesn’t want ambiguous partners.

Jimin
- His treatment of seo yeong annoyed me. Felt disrespected on her behalf, especially on that date. I appreciate him apologizing though.
- Best banter with yerin. I love watching how much fun they have on dates.

Yerin
- I find her so charming. Her energy is so contagious and has a talent of making people around her feel comfortable.
- I love her hair

Anticlimatic ending destroy this drama

I watched this on Christmas eve but i don't have any mood to make review about this drama until now.

This version has more logical and detailed plot, with a very clear main storyline. It focuses on the relationship between the ML and FL, while retaining the familial bond between the FL and her son, as well as the healing of her mental illness. Other subplots have been removed.

The overall pacing is smooth and the content is tight, but the ending feels rushed and anticlimactic, failing to clearly explain the awakening of the fictional characters. The emotional storylines include both romantic and familial love, with rich layers of development and clear emotional progression. ML acts as a bridge between his son and FL, no longer just watching passively.

The new treatment plan involves hypnotizing FL instead of the doctor. This approach is clear because a mother is willing to give everything for her child

The ending doesn't clearly explain which piece of evidence led to the female doctor's arrest. Wang Nan and Yuan Yu Han are both talented actors with good chemistry; their every expression and gesture showcases their acting prowess. Ironically, this ending doesn't do justice to their skills.

Still decent watch.

Quite boring in the middle

I watched this drama years ago and this drama was another drama that hard to finish.

Zuo Ming and Li Ruo Qi have nice chemistry but those fake kisses was infuriating. It's a sweet drama with no angst but i got too bored on the middle so i need few times to finish this drama. The plot got many popular tropes from short dramas, such as a substitute marriage, ML and FL not knowing each other's marriage partners (in short dramas, marriage doesn't even require a physical certificate), and the iconic scene where the ML shields the FL from a stick.

The logic in this drama why the FL and her classmates don't recognize the ML, it's not like they got amnesia on one go.

Only deserve to watch only once

Lukewarm drama

I watched this when i was on Zhang Chu Xuan festival drama last year and i feel lukewarm about it when she was collaborated with Shen Hao Nan. The plot is generic and there is no romantic chemistry between Shen Hao Nan and Zhang Chu Xuan. There is no misunderstanding between the couple but the family drama of FL was infuriating to watch since it was full of verbal sparring which is make me bored in the middle.

Only recommended to watch once even you are hardcore fans.

A Resplendent Utopia of Satire Comedy

Truth to be told, I totally have no slightest idea of this drama’s existence until I personally see Tencent’s February watchlist on Weibo. I tried every single endeavor to absorb myself in the OG source, to no avail as I’m not that overzealous of spending a generous amount of time to complete the whole 2000 chapters in one go. Nevertheless, the drama still gives me a memorable experience and I must say it’s one of the most meticulous drama ever produced in C-drama land. Let’s get down and see my take on it, shall we?
Disclaimer: As I’d said in the comment section before, I have no single penny to pay for neither express package nor VIP subscription, which means I have to wait the illegal sites to upload those videos. Per this day, I’ve only watched until ep 21 and will be waiting for the rest of the episodes in the following days. But I’ve decided to write this review while I’m having a ton of spare time (it’s Chinese New Year LMFAO).

The story is centered around the freshly-sacked corporate worker Pei Qian, who was a game designer in his previous company, Fuhui. He was kicked out because of writing a self-help guide for fellow workers on how to fighting for their rights in a ruthless working place. After being made redundant for several days, Pei Qian is suddenly invited to be a CEO for a startup company under the financial aid of the enigmatic billionaire Mr. Sima. However, there is a special clause where Pei Qian must make sure his company is going bankrupt so that he can earn some remuneration for himself. Thinking that losing money is as easy as a piece of cake, he establishes Tengda Corporation in a whim and recruits slackers and job-losers instead of high-end professionals. Joining his comrade are his goofy BFF Ma Yang, the unknowingly hardworking novelist and screenwriter Huang Sibo, the couch potato Bao Xu, the eccentric coder Lv Mingliang, the cat lover Li Yada, the clumsy yet kind-hearted accountant Hao Qiong, the intellectual and stubborn-as-a-mule chaebol heiress Lin Wan, the no-nonsense special assistant Xin Hailu, the wacky frenemy and Fuhui’s heir Li Shi, and more on the go. Nonetheless, things never go according to Pei Qian’s wish as Tengda’s income keeps shooting up in every sector including gaming, internet café, private restaurant, fitness center, web novel platform, film production, and real estate business (through Sibo’s lover Hu Yue’s effort by creating a vlog to promote the Four Wall Apartment). Despite knowing that he won’t get a lot of money as he expects, he feels proud for his workers who have all worked hard to prove their worth to him even when he demands nothing from them.

So, “No Pain No Gain” becomes the maiden avant-garde in C-drama world to utilize satire comedy as a means to convey a deeper emotional message related to our daily life, which involves the grueling vicissitudes of life, the rat race within every single blue-collar worker (visibly shown in SkyFire Studio arc), and the delight of watching the employees wholeheartedly devoting their time to please their boss. Furthermore, “No Pain No Gain” isn’t afraid to embrace the cruel reality of life, which has been avoided by most dramas, to connect more seamlessly with the watchers young and old alike. At first, it’s all about comedy, laughter, joyous moment of the life. But, as the drama keeps rumbling on and on, it starts to lean more to a melancholic phase as we see how Pei Qian is portrayed as an ordinary person with a little money to fend for himself (which he spends for his apartment mortgage), instead of a ruthless domineering CEO we’ve always seen in mini dramas before.

For the acting department, I want to say that all of the casts’ performances are laudable especially for Peng Yuchang. It’s been a while since I last saw him in “The Outcast/I Am Nobody”, but he still has the similar charm as back then, being able to embody Pei Qian’s character flawlessly as well as portraying his micro-expressions to the point of exceed expectation. I’m looking forward to his new drama “Wan Gu Zui Qiang Zong” too. As for Jelly Lin, I’m not sure what to say, but I suppose her acting as Lin Wan is kind of lacking a bit or perhaps the forced romance vibes makes me troubled. The rest of the casts do an absolutely good job and I’m surprised to see several names as supporting characters as well (namely Wu Junting, Chang Long, and He Ruixian).

OSTs, background settings, costumes are mesmerizing and depict the urban life of China accurately, to the point that I have no more complaints to yap about.

Overall, it’s a big 10/10 for me. It’s such a shame that “No Pain No Gain” is a super-duper underrated hidden gem buried beneath those high-profile dramas. I hope that one day, it can gain a strong foothold in the C-drama world and be the best of the best. I’m not sure if this drama is your cup of tea or not but do try several episodes if you’re that curious. I bet you’re going to be hooked sooner or later. Okay, time to end my review here, good luck and happy watching!!! Happy Chinese New Year in advance too!!!

Thought-provoking character study on luxury, identity, and narrative power.

If you enjoy complex characters that make you think hard about their motives, there is a lot to like here. The mystery is strong — quite a maze — but done in a way that reinforces the themes rather than simply solving plot points. And I love stories like that.

The way it examines luxury and identity is fascinating, especially how it weaves the power of narrative as the driving force behind both.

The acting was incredible. Especially Shin Hye-sun — which should be no surprise — she builds the character with such detail. Lee Yi Dam also stood out. I do wish they had spent more time on her character, but she absolutely nailed the role.

I thought episodes 7 and 8 could have stretched into one or two more episodes, but it’s hard to complain about a tightly told story.

As for the ending, it might upset some, but I thought it stayed true to the story — reinforcing the themes in a thought-provoking way rather than over-explaining.

Highly recommend this one.
