Don't worry about the age difference, I highly recommend watching it!!!!

I believe Key to the Phoenix Heart will be a hit drama of 2026. I can say it has the best-written script among the dramas I've watched in a long time. The characters, the plot, the storyline, everything is perfect.

Hou Minghao and Ai Mi truly did justice to their roles. I could fully feel the emotions they wanted to convey (love, loyalty, friendship, faith, growth), everything was there as it should be. Their chemistry was top-notch. I was really captivated by this drama because it was so good. #KeytothePhoenixHeart is one of those dramas that proves all you need is love and a little bit of imagination. It offered everything a viewer could want and made us want more. I really understand why #HouMinghao loves #XiaoWuyi so much.

I liked this even though I wasnt expecting to

I was so annoyed with the special episode after the first season. Like super annoyed! I thought about just bouncing after that. I'm glad I didn't. This made me enjoy the overall series (both seasons) much more. If you're gonna watch season 1 you must watch season 2. Lesson learned.

The S2 story was interesting albeit a little strained in parts. The lack of communication trope in BL is one of the most frustrating ones for me. It gets resolved as it always does but ugh.

I love the chemistry between the mains, even when they're fighting. Also there is a second and third couple here. One doesnt get enough screen time. The other gets more context but doesnt take us on the full emotional journey of how they end up together.

It's not a perfect story, but its a good one.

One of the best Chinese dual Female-lead Dramas I've ever watched!!!

The acting is outstanding, and the chemistry between the two leads is simply amazing. Every glance, every silent moment, and every subtle interaction speaks louder than words. It's the kind of relationship that never explicitly says "I love you," yet somehow makes you feel it in every scene.

The story is beautifully written, with plenty of symbolism and hidden meanings that make every episode even more rewarding to watch. It's emotional, thoughtful, and keeps you invested from beginning to end.

I truly hope more people will give this drama a chance and support it. It deserves so much more recognition, and I sincerely hope we'll get a ss2.

An incredible storyline!

This is my first review I’ve ever written and having been a fan of HMH for quite sometime and love the way he breathes life into his character, I naturally already planned to watch this drama.

Understanding this drama is quite controversial in terms of the casting but I honestly can’t imagine anyone else playing Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu. Both actors including the support characters were so well written, with strong arcs and backstories. This drama isn’t a black or white drama, it is grey in ways where you can sympathise with the villain and understand why certain things came out the way they are.

There is almost no plot holes, no questions left unanswered and absolutely no filler scenes either. It’s been an incredibly long time that a drama had me anticipating the next episode and not skipping a single scene. Due to it being only 28 episodes and a tight budget, the storyline is straight to the point without feeling rushed, everything is intentional.

The director is outstanding, everything character truly shines and each scene is so beautifully thought out. I also want to give a huge shoutout to HMH, the action scenes is 10/10! In the opening scene, HMH actually used real fire (insane).

I could honestly go on and on about this drama but to keep it short, this is a masterpiece. Be ready for twists and turns in every episode! The way it is designed is almost like an onion, just when you think you have it figured out, it will surprise you! Do yourself a favour and watch this drama.

The OST’s are awesome too! HMH sang two, a battle song and a duet with Zhang Bichen, and it was so beautiful!

Lastly, shoutout to Aimi! This is her first leading role and she was outstanding.

Un drama soprannaturale poco horror e troppo thriller e con un sovraffollamento di cattivi.

Partiamo dalle aspettative: tra il ritorno di Nam Joo Hyuk dopo il servizio militare (l’ultimo suo drama, Vigilante, risale infatti al 2023), la regia di Choi Jung Kyu e l’ampia visibilità data da Netflix… Ci si aspetta – inevitabilmente – davvero tanto. "Donggung" – conosciuto anche come “The East Palace”, che poi è storicamente il palazzo del Principe Ereditario - è senz’altro un prodotto ambizioso e per certi versi anche curato, ma che non riesce a centrare davvero l’obiettivo prefissato.

LA STORIA - L’avvio è intrigante e catapulta lo spettatore in un regno immaginario afflitto da morti inspiegabili che colpiscono uno dopo l’altro gli eredi della famiglia reale. L’elemento soprannaturale permea l’ambientazione in modo quasi onnipresente, facendo percepire il concentrato di forze sinistre e spiriti malvagi che si annidano praticamente in ogni angolo del Palazzo. Il Re, disperato per lo stato di salute del giovane Principe Ereditario, convoca segretamente Gu Cheon per via della sua singolare capacità di vedere gli spiriti e viaggiare nel regno dei morti. Quale spia al suo fianco – nei panni di una dama di corte come tante - mette la propria figlia, la principessa Saeng Gang, allontanata da tempo da palazzo per volere dello stesso sovrano a causa della sua capacità di udire le voci degli spiriti, aspetto fortemente in contrasto con quanto il sovrano va affermando dinnanzi ai suoi sudditi, ovvero che le maledizioni e gli spiriti non esistono.
L’improbabile duo “maledetto” si ritrova dunque a investigare sul mistero che avvolge il Palazzo Reale, fatto non solo di presenze vendicative tanto inquietanti quanto rancorose, ma anche di segreti sepolti da tempo. Fino a qui, tutto bene. Molto bene, a dirla tutta. Ma le ricerche di Gu Cheon e Saeng Gang portano a uno scenario ripetitivo, dove lui varca il mondo dei morti svariate volte e ripropone la lotta con lo spirito maligno di turno. Scenograficamente la prima volta si rimane colpiti, le tonalità rossastre e l’atmosfera densa rendono in pieno l’idea di un luogo insidioso e opprimente. Alla lunga, però, stufa un po’. Stesso discorso per gli spiriti maligni, che di horror hanno ben poco. Rispetto ad altri drama osa di più, certo, ma se parliamo di horror, siamo davvero su piani molto distanti: non c’è proprio nulla di raccapricciante e nessuna tensione in crescendo prima dell’improvviso e spiazzante colpo di scena. Al di là che le presenze sono quindi semplicemente bruttine, manca proprio il brivido necessario a mantenere viva l’attenzione e, senza la quale, tutto si traduce in una serie di scene ripetute che, al più, alimentano la noia. Altra nota dolente, la sovrasaturazione di cattivi, tra vivi e non: si parte dalla Favorita, poi si punta il dito contro la Regina Vedova, poi è il turno dello stesso sovrano, poi dello spirito del Principe Ereditario, quindi ancora la madre del Re e, perché no, tiriamo in ballo anche la madre di Saeng Gang. Far credere che un personaggio è il colpevole e poi dirottare gli indizi su un altro è sempre un bel meccanismo da guardare… Una volta. Ma se poi le volte diventano due, tre, quattro o addirittura cinque, ci si trova di fronte a un disco rotto che gira a vuoto. Sostanzialmente tutto si traduce in un buon numero di peccati e una nutrita schiera di cattivi, dove l’obiettivo sembra diventare un gioco di associazione (collega il peccato al cattivo giusto). Detto questo, tra tutti i colpevoli, la figura più complessa, interessante e meglio riuscita è senza dubbio quella del Re, dove le colpe - pur pesanti e imperdonabili – nella sua mente trovano una sorta di giustificazione, seguendo un po’ la logica machiavelliana de “Il fine giustifica i mezzi”.
Il finale non riesce assolutamente a darsi un tono, sembra tirato insieme in modo sbrigativo negli ultimi minuti e lascia un senso di incompletezza, quasi fosse mancata qualche lettera per scrivere davvero al parola “FINE”. Poteva avere senso solo nel caso fosse previsto un sequel – cosa che non mi risulta al momento – ma anche lì poi ci si sarebbe dovuti inventare tutto un nuovo arco narrativo per la seconda stagione. Se nuovo arco narrativo significa però riproporre ancora scene ripetute in continuazione... Anche no, grazie.

CAST - Su Nam Joo Hyuk c’è poco da dire, è davvero bravo. Una prova per lui del tutto nuova, che si discosta dai ruoli interpretati in passato, mostrando una maggiore maturità. Il suo Gu Cheon è stanco, sarcastico e segnato dal passato: una percezione che si evince in modo costante quasi fosse un’aura visibile intrinseca, che si trascina dietro qualunque sia la scena (una lotta, un momento ironico, un confronto serio, ecc.). Le parole seguono il copione, lo sguardo tiene salda l’identità del personaggio. Al suo fianco, Roh Yoon Seo porta in scena una figura che non è la classica damigella in pericolo, bensì il collante dell'indagine, colei che dipana gli intrighi politici mentre Gu Cheon combatte gli spiriti. La loro partnership, costruita su fiducia e rispetto reciproco, dovrebbe essere il cuore pulsante della storia, con una chimica che cresce in modo naturale e mai forzato. Dico “dovrebbe” perché avrei apprezzato un focus maggiore sull’aspetto emotivo che riguarda il duo e qualche viaggio nel mondo degli spiriti in meno.

IN CONCLUSIONE - "Donggung" cerca palesemente di portare in scena qualcosa di nuovo. Ci riesce però poco. E’ una visione che trova senso per chi apprezza un po’ di fantasy e atmosfere cupe (ma non troppo cupe) e per il piacere di rivedere il bravo attore protagonista. Ma chi è alla ricerca di una storia dai contorni netti e dal profondo impatto emotivo, potrebbe ritrovarsi arrancare con frustrazione, soprattutto nella seconda parte.

BEST CDRAMA THIS YEAR

To be honest I am quite picky and it's not hard for me to just lose the mood and drop a drama.

I love HouMinghao but I am still critical of some of his stuff, usually about plot, characterization or story telling, but this one, it is amazing.

The acting is superb, the plot moves fast, pacing is steady (also fast) but not sacrificing story telling. A lot of acting details, smalls acting choices that enrich characters, plot twist galore, some continuity problems but nothing too glaring, all done very tastefully, show and not tell.

The music is so good!!! Everybody had their moment to shine, which is so impressive, no one was dumbed down for the sake of another characters. Everybody has their own goals and struggle, even side characters have highlighted moments where they can show off their acting skills.

With 28 episodes they did so much, but nothing felt hurried or to fast, every tidbit we get at the beginning is used and explained at the end.

Truly one of the best dramas this year.

O CGI que serve ao drama, e não o contrário

Esse drama surge em um momento particularmente oportuno, quando a discussão sobre inteligência artificial, CGI e restrições orçamentárias domina boa parte da indústria audiovisual. E faz isso da melhor maneira possível: respondendo com competência, não com discurso. A série demonstra que tecnologia, quando colocada a serviço de uma visão artística consistente, deixa de ser atalho e passa a ser ferramenta. Cenografia, efeitos visuais, computação gráfica e recursos de IA convivem em absoluto equilíbrio, compondo uma identidade visual de padrão cinematográfico. É uma produção que lembra, com certa elegância, que investimento e bom gosto continuam sendo mais importantes do que simplesmente acumular tecnologia. Nesse aspecto, torna-se inevitável compará-la a superproduções que exibem cifras impressionantes, mas entregam um acabamento visual muito menos refinado.

O roteiro acompanha esse nível de cuidado. A narrativa opta por uma construção didática, mas jamais simplista, conduzindo o espectador por suas intrigas políticas sem recorrer a explicações artificiais. O rei parece ocupar naturalmente a posição de grande antagonista, mas o desfecho desmonta essa leitura confortável e o transforma em uma figura moralmente muito mais inquietante. Não há absolvição, tampouco condenação fácil. Suas escolhas permanecem profundamente questionáveis, mas carregam uma lógica interna que obriga o espectador a reconsiderar julgamentos precipitados. É justamente esse desconforto ético que dá ao drama uma densidade rara, prolongando a reflexão muito além do episódio final.

As atuações completam um conjunto de altíssimo nível. Nam Joo-hyuk confirma mais uma vez a capacidade de desaparecer dentro do personagem, construindo uma interpretação marcada por entrega e convicção. Yoon Seo responde com a mesma intensidade, encontrando verdade emocional em cada momento decisivo sem recorrer a exageros. Já Kwak Dong-yeon impressiona justamente pelo oposto: fala pouco, mas comunica muito. Sua atuação corporal e o domínio das expressões faciais transformam silêncios em discurso. O resultado é um drama que alia excelência técnica, inteligência narrativa e atuações de alto nível, encerrando sua primeira temporada com a confortável sensação de que ainda existe um universo rico o suficiente para justificar uma continuação.

A Missed Opportunity Despite a Promising Cast

I had been looking forward to Overdo for months, mainly because of Zhang Linghe.The trailers, cast and the fact that it was promoted as an S+ production set my expectations very high. Unfortunately, I ended up dropping it after Episode 6.The biggest issue for me wasn’t the actors..it was the execution. Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan delivered convincing performances with the material they were given, but even talented actors can’t fully compensate for weak storytelling.The pacing felt inconsistent, with emotional moments that didn’t have enough buildup to make them truly impactful. Several scenes seemed rushed, making it difficult to become emotionally invested in the characters or their relationship. While the drama looked visually appealing, the editing and overall direction often made it feel less polished than I expected from a production with such a large budget.The supporting cast also had potential, but many characters weren’t given enough depth to leave a lasting impression. Instead of building suspense and emotional tension naturally, the story often moved from one event to another without allowing important moments to breathe.I understand that many viewers enjoyed the drama and that’s perfectly valid.This review simply reflects my personal experience. Criticizing the writing, pacing and production isn’t the same as criticizing the actors. I genuinely believe the cast deserved a stronger script and better execution.In the end, Overdo wasn’t a terrible drama,it just didn’t live up to the expectations created by its cast, budget and pre-release hype. I had hoped for something unforgettable, but unfortunately, it wasn’t able to keep me engaged.

Boring!!! Terrible!!! Predictable!!!

I like both actors in this drama and have seen the movie version of this. Couldn't get past episode 1 with all the predictable kind of plot. It's very obvious that Park Eun Bin's character will be used by the prosecutor to solve crimes and win cases and falling in love with each other will come in the middle of things. What's new?! It's a waste of time to even bother finishing episode 1 since everything's predictable. The narrative should should have been given a different twist. If you're a die hard fan of either actor, go ahead and bore yourself. Otherwise, save yourself because there are other underrated dramas or series more worthy to be watched and re-watched.

A DISASTER IN THE FORM OF A DRAMA

​Honestly, what a massive waste of time. How is it possible for two streaming giants to deliver such a weak, lifeless project? It’s high time the industry learned that visual beauty and a multi-million dollar budget can’t save a bad script.
​Having attractive actors, flawless costumes, and a luxurious aesthetic is completely useless if the story is empty. These days, there are low-budget mini-dramas with storylines and performances light-years ahead of this disaster.
​iQIYI selling this work as a "huge success" is a joke—if the numbers are high, it’s purely thanks to blind devotion from fanbases trying to protect their idols' image, not because of the drama's quality. And don't even try to claim the public is complaining out of grudge or because they "haven't gotten over [POJ]." The reality is simple: the drama is terrible strictly on its own merits.
​Amateurish Direction and Post-Production: The direction is awful, the background music is wildly over-the-top—trying to force emotion where there is none—and the special effects have absolutely nothing "special" about them.
​Cast on Autopilot: Zhang Linghe delivers a completely expressionless performance, while Wang Churan seems more concerned with posing for the camera and looking pretty than actually conveying real emotion. She is stunning, but as an actress, she leaves a whole lot to be desired.

Nokdu tiene una historia bien interesante

Desde el comienzo esta historia engancha de inmediato y mantiene muy bien el ritmo hasta el final. Sabe combinar elementos como la intriga, la política, la comedia y la acción.
Te mantiene pendiente de los asuntos políticos y relacionados a la aldea, asimismo te atrae y divierte con el prota encubierto y además te llena de adrenalina con las escenas de artes marciales y enfrentamientos.


Menciones Honoríficas

Me gustó como manejaron la política en la historia; todo conecta súper bien y es fácil de entender, no se siente pesado para nada

Por otra parte, desarollé profunda admiración por la aldea de mujeres, su unidad, trabajo en equipo, resiliencia y capacidad de luchar.

También hay un romance entre los principales pero no fue algo a lo que presté demasiada atención, estaba allí y era lindo pero ya está.

Kang Tae Oh hizo un papelazo. Me encantó lo lindo, amable y comprensivo que era como un buen tipo, y luego ver ese cambio radical: esa faceta despiadada que siempre estuvo oculta. En ese punto se lució todavía más

Mención honorífica a Hwang In Youp. De guardaespaldas leal y con esos trajes oscuros tipo ninja... un 10/10.

El final fue en pocas palabras perfecto!! digamos que esa profecía se cumplió de una manera que no esperaba pero fue tan gratificante, el final de todo ese dilema política, intrigas y tretas fue el punto final justo y gratificante.

Además ver a Nokdu lejos del palacio viviendo en paz con su amada, comprometiéndose y estando felices, fue lo mejor.

Conclusiones

The Tale of Nokdu es uno de esos dramas que recuerdo con emoción porque me hizo sentir mucho mientras lo veía. Es un drama histórico bien hecho que no necesita ser complejo sino bien contado para sumergirte en su historia. Disfrutas de buenos personajes, buenas actuaciones y buen plot ¿Qué más se puede pedir?
