I came for Xu Kai. I stayed for the imperial cuisine that became the real star of the drama.

Sometimes, a drama doesn't need grand battles, heartbreaking sacrifices, or earth-shattering plot twists to be enjoyable.

Sometimes...

it simply needs to know exactly what kind of story it wants to tell.

That was Royal Feast for me.

I started this drama knowing it had mixed reviews. Many viewers compared it to Story of Yanxi Palace simply because it reunited Xu Kai and Wu Jinyan. Others criticized the slow pacing, limited romance, and heavy focus on palace life rather than the relationship between the leads.

So I adjusted my expectations before pressing play.

And I'm glad I did.

From the very beginning, Royal Feast made it clear that this wasn't a romance disguised as a palace drama.

It was a palace drama told through food.
As someone who genuinely enjoys cooking, I found myself paying as much attention to every dish as I did to the dialogue.

Each banquet wasn't simply about beautiful presentation.

Every ingredient, cooking technique, and imperial meal carried purpose—whether to celebrate, heal, persuade, or reflect the emotions of the people eating it.

I honestly found myself looking forward to every cooking sequence.

The food cinematography alone deserves recognition.

Every dish looked like a work of art.

The preparation, the colors, the close-up shots, and the attention to historical detail made every imperial banquet feel immersive.

There were moments when I forgot I was watching a historical drama because I became completely invested in the cooking itself.

Visually, Royal Feast is elegant.
The costumes beautifully captured the refinement of the Ming Dynasty without feeling excessively extravagant.

The palace interiors, lighting, and cinematography created an atmosphere that felt calm rather than overwhelming.

The soundtrack complemented the story well.
It never stood out as unforgettable, but it quietly supported the emotions without distracting from them.

Xu Kai once again reminded me why I enjoy watching his dramas.

This role couldn't be more different from characters like Li Chenlan or Mo Qing.

There were no battlefields.

No world-ending enemies.

No dramatic sacrifices every few episodes.

Instead, he portrayed Zhu Zhanji with remarkable restraint.

What impressed me most was the layered progression of his performance.

As the story moved from Grand Imperial Grandson, to Crown Prince, and eventually to Emperor, Xu Kai subtly adjusted the character's demeanor.

Without relying on exaggerated emotional scenes, you could gradually feel the increasing weight of responsibility resting on his shoulders.
His expressions became more restrained.

His decisions became more calculated.

His quiet moments carried more emotional weight than many dramatic speeches could have.

It wasn't an explosive performance.

It was a controlled one.

And I appreciated that.

Wu Jinyan also fit Yao Zijin perfectly.

Rather than portraying another loud or overly ambitious heroine, she gave us someone calm, patient, intelligent, and deeply devoted to her craft.

Her greatest strength wasn't political manipulation.

It was her ability to communicate through food.

Together, Xu Kai and Wu Jinyan shared a gentle chemistry.

However...

I completely understand why many viewers felt disappointed with the romance.

Personally, I never watched Royal Feast expecting an intense love story.

Even so, I couldn't help wishing the leads had been given more time together.

There were long stretches where palace affairs, imperial succession, kitchen rivalries, and political conflicts dominated the narrative while the romance quietly waited in the background.
If you're looking for constant romantic progression, this drama will probably feel lacking. That was one of the most common criticisms I came across from other viewers as well.

The palace intrigue itself was enjoyable without becoming overly exhausting.

Rather than relying entirely on endless betrayals or harem warfare, the story focused more on imperial succession, family responsibilities, court politics, and the burden of leadership.
It wasn't as intense as Story of Yanxi Palace.

It also wasn't trying to be.

That worked in its favor.

One thing I appreciated was that the drama never rushed to become something it wasn't.
It remained consistent with its identity from beginning to end.

If I had one criticism, it would be the pacing.
At forty episodes, there were moments when the story lingered longer than necessary.
Some political conflicts and kitchen rivalries could have been tightened, and I do agree with many viewers that the romance deserved more development.

Still...

I never found myself wanting to drop the drama.

Perhaps because I entered it with the right expectations.

I wasn't waiting for epic battlefields.

I wasn't waiting for tragic sacrifices.

I wasn't waiting for passionate romance every episode.

I was simply enjoying the experience.

One thing about me is that I'm still relatively new to C-dramas.
Only a few months ago, my free time was spent outdoors—cycling, hiking, and chasing adventures.
Now, after watching more than forty historical dramas, I've realized something.

Not every drama needs to emotionally destroy me to leave a good impression.

Sometimes...

watching beautifully prepared imperial cuisine while palace politics quietly unfold is exactly the kind of experience I need.

Royal Feast may never become one of my all-time favorites.

But it became one of my most relaxing watches.
And as someone who genuinely enjoys cooking...
I probably appreciated it far more than I expected.

Great chemistry between FL and costars

I think this is my favorite of this storyline. She genuinely just wanted to live and do the things she always wanted to do (like get an education - something we take for granted.)
However, as shown with the bird flu case and her brother almost dying, she was unwilling to trample on other people's lives to get there. That in itself sets her apart. The only thing I didnt like was that they never included the mother's storyline but it is a *short drama and with the time they had they did a very good job. Can we get a second season?

The recovery portion of Krit’s storyline felt a little rushed and underexplained. The medical aspect could have used more clarity, especially regarding the cause and severity of his coma. The transition from the accident to his critical condition felt slightly disproportionate, making that part of the storyline harder to fully understand.

the best dating show ever

His Man Season 2 is easily one of my favorite dating shows ever. JunSeongHo completely stole my heart. Watching Junseong stay so sincere and choose Seongho from the very beginning was beautiful. I loved how Seongho slowly opened his heart and learned to trust Junseong’s feelings. Their story wasn’t rushed—it felt real, warm, and full of genuine growth. Their chemistry, communication, and respect for each other made them unforgettable. No matter how many dating shows I watch, JunSeongHo will always be my favorite couple. 🤍

Initially thought the love line of Jamie and Mar a bit out of place but, it tied it very nicely with how it developed the character of Jamie, who's a playboy but turned into a lover boy downbad for Mar. Didn't mind it at all!

Jamie is still my best boy!

The Devil is Beautiful

Red flags and toxic traits run amuck in this series, but since that's the whole point, we are tuning in for it. It's Jane v. Jane in a battle of wills and I think we're all hoping for a sympathy for the Devil redemption arc, but we'll see. So far I'm 3 episodes in and the writing is keeping me locked in with all the little twisted details.

So fun, very underrated

This show was very underrated in my opinion. It was so well written and so well acted. Though at times suspenseful - more often I would burst out laughing! I thoroughly enjoyed it it, especially the 2 main characters played by Lim Ji- Leon and Lee Jung-Jae. Their acting was superb and very different than usual for Lee Jung-Jae. I have rewatched it and will rewatch again. Excellent RomCom.

Fun

A fun watch and it's always a blast to see mermaids taken seriously in media. That being said the story itself feels weak at times and I almost feel it was more of an acting problem than the story itself. The ML and FL didn't seem to have much chemistry to me. I love a good past lifes reincarnation story-- it's one of my favorite tropes ever. This one reuses the same scenes A LOT. Gets a little annoying.

I honestly liked the scenes from the past more than the actual story playing out which is a pretty weird take for me to come away with I think lol.

Really Good But Not The Best

Certainly deserved my watch as it hits a LOT of the major tropes that I love-- supernatural, folklore, romance, grim reapers, destiny, etc+

That being said, compared to others in the same genre, I don't think it comes out on top as much as some others seem to think.

I know this is in a lot of peoples all time favs, I had a few issues with it. Still great though. Watchable alone for the relationship between the ML and Grim Reaper. They were fantastic acting along side each other. Would watch again only for them. Would watch a whole spin off of only them.

FL is a little too good at playing a bratty teenager to the point she becomes unlikable for a large portion of the show. The age difference (of the characters) as well reads a little strangely no matter how you look at it.

Acting strength was bang on for this show though. Everyone was great. And I give it major credit where credit is due that the last minute plot twist took me hard off guard.

Very entertaining. From the beginning of the episode til the last episode. So worth it to watch again and again! Characters play a crucial role in delivering, yet they manage to deliver it smoothly. The media team did a great job. Highly recommended to rewatch always when you don't know what K-dramas to watch.

Phenomenal acting skills, good chemistry, interesting story, worth to watch

The prosecutor's proposal is like a good coffee on a rainy day in Korea. It is definitely something you have to watch during the holidays, once you start it, you just keep wanting more & more...

The actors were chosen perfectly, I honestly can't imagine anyone else for these roles. The chemistry is really good. I even thought while I was watching the 6th episode, if they had the main roles in a few series I found poor, I'd have liked that specific series (side note: Kim Yoon-Sik is so insanely handsome and you'll see 😌). Oh, and I also like the character development!!

And not to mention, THE EFFORT THEY PUT INTO ALL OF THIS. Like that's genuinely mind-blowing (for instance: search Studio Oak on Youtube).

The story is also well-written, it creates a detective atmosphere and you feel like you're suddenly in a Columbo episode hahaha.

All I can say is even though I rarely rewatch series I've already watched once, I'll definitely rewatch this one ❤️. Give it a shot!

(I hope this didn't come out like a spoiler)

Literally what were they even trying to do here lol

Batshit insane in every regard. Many plot lines led literally no where. It was an okay watch purely on the "eh that was fun" scale but literally???? What??? Were they thinking???? Suho did a really good job for an idol honestly and had the best and most fleshed out plot hook. Tone shift between first and second half was wild. Also literally why tf did she bite to SK in the last ep??????

Speaking of dropped plot points the running hair loss joke from the first like 5 eps is literally never mentioned again. Same with the shamans kid???? Those two things pissed me off... but there were plenty of other times this sort of thing happened as well.

Whole lotta nothing.

Also like--- I would count this as a rare example of the second lead winning the girl. The ML gets ZERO romance allusion until the last like 10 mins of the whole show and frankly I would've never forgave him for what he did. Second lead quire literally had her heart till the end (his end ope).
