Park Shin Hye rules the court in this devilishly entertaining fantasy thriller

Over the years, the kdrama scene has significantly changed its focus from romcoms to thrillers. Three years after her hiatus and on her second kdrama this year, Park Shin Hye delivers devilishly good performance in this supernatural thriller.

For starters, the story is about an elite devil named Justitia banished to the human world after making an erroneous judgment. In order to go back to hell, she must catch and kill ten remorseless murderers while she is lives in the body of a judge named Kang Bit Na.

What I appreciate in this show the most is how it addresses loopholes right away. Fantasy thrillers need to establish laws and rules that govern the world which in this case is hell. The story is smart and clever on its first act. It also didn't rush the blossoming romance between Bit Na and Han Da On, a police officer whom she met and rightfully acquitted in one her trials.

I find it surprising that Bit Na takes her job seriously even though technically this is not part of her mission. Bit Na punishes the criminals still in a lawful manner. Once Bit Na learns the defendant is unrepenting and unforgiven of their murderous crime, she acquits and kills them consequently once they are released from prison.

The highlight of this show is how Bit Na punishes and puts the criminals in the shoes of their victims. These fight scenes are deliberately drawn out to give the criminals the taste of their own medicine. Truly, the golden rule is the ultimate, all-encompassing principle of ethics: Don't do unto others what you don't want done unto you. It's interesting this kind of ethics is relevant to Hell.

There are loads to love from this show – it's unpredictable, fast-paced and entertaining although only for the first half. It also delivers some of the laugh out loud devilish shenanigans: a devil saying "what the hell" and getting blinded by the Cross. Demons also apparently study bible, do charity works and attend Mass while wearing protective equipment of course. There are also cleaning boys who are the complete opposite of SOCO as they erase every piece of evidence in the crime scene. It somehow makes a point that demons are actually better than greedy humans.

Bit Na and Da On's love story is the epitome of enemies to lovers – lots of banters, playful back-and-forth fueling romantic tension and the inevitable close proximity They may hate one another but they pine for each other without them realizing it. It is entertaining how they play cat and mouse with each other and which of them will catch the criminal first.

I prefer this show to Nam Joo Hyuk's Vigilante as Judge from Hell emphasizes how the criminals are unrepenting and unforgiven for the crimes they did. It took its time to narrate the motive and nature of the crime as well as the perspective and emotional turmoil of the family's victims. Bit Na does not simply kill criminals just because they easily got away from law, they were not remorseful of their actions at all.

This is also way better than Song Kang's My Demon because it has a clear story world-building about demons. It was interesting how Bit Na said they did receive orders from God to punish sinners who doesn't repent and are unapologetic for their crimes. In the realm of The Judge from Hell, demons are created for the sole purpose of prosecuting and punishing ruthless individuals.

The true star of this show is Park Shin Hye and steely grace portrayal of a devil judge. Her unhinged, electric energy is matched by her flashy and statement outfits she wear during the punishment scenes. Despite her brooding appearance, Shin Hye still manages to bring humor without relying on gags and musical cues.

Although this kdrama tackles vigilantism and crime procedural, it does not take itself seriously and has lots of funny moments in between. The show is gripping and thought-provoking but infuses light-hearted moments outside the court.

Ironically, the weakest point of the show is the villains. They were initially thought as invincible. But at the very last minute, they either changed their minds or easily got killed. All the issues came up and were resolved instantly which felt so anticlimactic.

All in all, The Judge from Hell is an easy watch with its intriguing premise and a fun lead performance. Punishing remorseless criminals has never been this hella satisfying. This series just proves the idea that on a certain degree greedy humans are way more scary and evil than demons themselves.

Exactly what it was supposed to be

So soundtrack number one was so good like so much better than I expected. I give it a solid 9 out of 10. Would I have watched 16 episodes of it? No, but that's what's so great about it is that it knew that it was too slow to be a normal drama, so they just did 4 episodes and it was perfect. Anymore would've been too long. Any less would've been too short. I felt like it gave you just enough time to fall in love with these characters and to root for their romance. You really, really wanted them together. After seeing their friendship for so many years, it waa just like you knew them and you just wanted them to be happy. You just wanted them to have a beautiful, happy relationship. You saw his torment and you didn't want that to continue. I really expected it to be so boring that I didn't really care about the characters. But the fact that it got me to care in such a short amount of time and it and in such slow moving plot line was very surprising. It was very aesthetically pleasing and wintery. The fact that they could invoke in me a sense of care and love for these characters and desire to see them a couple is a credit to the writing as well as to the actors. So Bravo!! Great Kdrama to end the year with.

Though not as good as Go Ahead, it's still a good adaptation worthy of watching

“Family by Choice” should be my last completed drama in 2024 and I’m glad I am ending my drama year on a happy note (but via a rocky journey of emotions). If you don’t know, this is an adaptation of the very popular and beloved Chinese drama “Go Ahead”. I will try to review “Family by Choice” as an independent drama and also in comparison to its predecessor.

Drama reviewed on its own:
Objectively, “Family by Choice” is a great drama. It has a little of everything that would appease different audiences. At its core, it’s about family and especially the new and lovable found family. This family of five was formed due to some unfortunate circumstances. But they are full of love, adoration and care. It’s not easy when two children were abandoned by their mothers at a very young age. The drama follows their healing journey into adulthood, and this journey isn’t easy. You need to prepare for an emotional roller coaster, as you will cry for them as they endure pain, laugh with them as they celebrate successes and smile with them as they find their romantic partners.

I enjoy the acting of the cast very much, especially, Hwang In Youp. I’ve seen most of his dramas but it’s in “Family by Choice” that I realize he has grown to be a great actor. His portrayal of the broken soul, San Ha, is spot on. I want to give him a hug every time I see him, and want to shake some sense into him and his mother, as he suffers under her emotional abuse and manipulation. Playing opposite him are Jung Chae Yeon and Bae Hyeog Seong. Both are great and the three of them have excellent chemistry together as siblings. I have to say, I quite like this portrayal of our female lead Jun Won. I love her sunny disposition and beautiful smile. No wonder she’s the light in San Ha’s dark world. There is no question in the acting ability of the veteran cast, especially the two lovable fathers. Let’s not forget the 3 adorable kids who started the drama with a bang! I actually wish they stay longer than just one episode.

This shorter version is able to fit in all the major plots of the original drama. The pacing is good, the main characters are endearing and the ‘villain’ is just as hateful. The drama is able to hold my attention for the full 16 hours, and I was not bored once, even though I already know how the story goes. I do have two criticisms: San Ha and his mother’s relationship took up too much screen time in an already-shortened version. As much as I appreciate the depiction of mental health issues, I would have liked to see his mother less and have that storyline resolved a lot sooner. It seems like this black cloud looms over everything for way too long, thus, making the drama a little less enjoyable. I’d rather see Hae Jun’s mother more. This long plot took away precious time from other characters that I enjoy. Secondly, though the romance is better than the original version, I want to see a longer and more believable transition of feelings on Ju Won’s end. She went from going in shock, to denial, and acceptance way too fast. The realization of her feelings happens too abruptly.

Comparison to “Go Ahead”:
The best part of “Go Ahead” is seeing the formation of the found family. The Chinese version spent a considerable amount of time showing us the kids' everyday life at home (not just at school) and how the two fathers take care of them in different ways. If you mention “Go Ahead” to those that saw it, they would comment without a doubt that the two fathers are the most MEMORABLE and adorable father duo in dramaland. The Korean version doesn’t give off the same vibe. It’s a watered down version, and this is the most disappointing thing about this drama.
The romance in “Go Ahead” is quite controversial. Many don’t like the perceived ‘love triangle’, because it does such a good job in showing us sibling love. Luckily, the romance in “Family by Choice” is written way better without too many icky feelings. From very early on in the drama, there are already many subtle hints and looks by San Ha, showing he has feelings for Ju Won. It also helps that Hae Jun’s declaration of marriage is obviously for a different reason. I also found Hwang In Youp and Jung Chae Yeon look much better as a couple. They have good chemistry as siblings and also as lovers. In contrast, Seven Tan’s character is way too tomboy-ish and young, thus the romantic pairing with Song Wei Long doesn’t quite work. In another romantic comedy, their height difference could be adorable. But in “Go Ahead”, with the backstory of growing up as ‘siblings’, this couple can give off uncomfortable icky vibes. Unfortunately, in both dramas, I have the same criticism of a poor transition of feelings on the female lead’s part.

I will still recommend viewers to watch “Family by Choice” whether you’ve seen the Chinese version or not. It has its own unique charms with great pacing and excellent acting. However, it doesn’t get as high a rating that I gave to “Go Ahead” (9.0) because I am missing screen time of the super lovable fathers.

Other random observations:
1. Actress Kim Hye Eun who plays San Ha's mother, has so much botox that it's distracting. Her forehead is so shiny as well!
2. Really excellent acting by the kids
3. Love seeing Ju Won (FL) stand up and defend her oppas against both mothers.

Hwang In Youp stole my heart in this rom-com !!!

This romantic comedy is centered around the journey of Lim Jo Kyung, who escape from bullying thanks to the power of make-up. Over the course of the story, she will learns to love herself with and without make-up, while finding love and acceptance, even bare-faced. The rivalry and bromance between the two main male characters is certainly my favorite part of the show. There drama is full of memorable comedic scenes, some of the most fun involving them bickering.

The story is not without flaws and required from me some suspension of disbelief. Indeed, the way the heroine is supposed to be considered as a super ugly duckling without make-up because of relatively poor skin condition and big glasses was not very credible to my eyes. I also really did not care about the secondary storylines of all the adults : it was a big part of the drama but I would not have minded for all of it to be removed from the drama, especially the romance of the heroine' sister. Removing that useless fat from the drama would have allowed the episodes to be shorter and focusing on the core of the story, making it better overall.

I clearly fell in love with Han Seo Joon, the character played by Hwang In Youp. I truly wish and need to see him in more lead roles because he is such a bright star. The character had the strongest narrative arc among the main roles : in spite of the writing, I rooted for him all along and that's a testimony of the good acting and charisma. He was indubitably the key factor in my appreciation of the drama as well as the root of my frustration when I felt the writing was not fair to his character. Next to him, Cha Eun Woo performance and character paled in comparison. I think his acting was not the worst but too surface level for me to like as much his character.

Next to both of them, Mun Ka Young was an excellent discovery : she had such a cute attitude and delivery of her lines in her role that I could not help to root for the happiness her character. I am very excited to see her in other titles. I cannot say the same from Park You Na who completes the quartet of main roles. I found her acting rather flat and the overall arc of her character annoying and cliche.

The production value was pretty great. The decors were colorful, totally fitting the girlish and youthful vibe of the series. The making and directing was very good for the romantic scenes, making them very swoony overall. The soundtrack was pretty good. I particularly enjoyed hearing Hwang In Youp sing one of the OST's song : fortunately, because it was used quite a lot in the drama.

I would recommend this to people that are looking for a romantic comedy set in high school. It is a pretty light watch overall with some good comedic scenes. It is not that deep but the overall message is positive. A lot of fluff, not that much substance but enough for what it is supposed to be. Even if the romance did not go in the way I would have wished it to go which frustrated me to no end, I still had quite a bit of pleasure watching the drama. Sometimes, that kind of fun is exactly what you need.

Neverthless, an empty person needs someone who can fill their emptiness.

For anyone wondering about this drama, give it a go. I can assure that you won't be a disappointed. Dramas like this represents us, the real people who aren't perfect.

Talking about this drama, I am happy that this Japanese version is not the exact copy of Korean one. The characters were flawed but not toxic. Unlike the korean version, the ML was not a red flag and FL was not dumb. They had their growth as person and artist. Besides them, all the other characters in this drama felt real. Their reality of trying not to feel empty. The only let down for me was the character named Chaiki. Personally, I didn't feel the need for that character. To me, it felt kind of forced.

All the Emotions that the roles had to play in the drama were nailed almost all the time.

This storyline is very incredible and sweet!
Xiang Yun a fairy, silly Female lead that works in a Marriage Pavilion that find matches for others and Chu Kong a God of war Male Lead they were assign as marriage partners because Xiang Yun fell into the the moral world and Chu Kong was dragged into it since they were stuck in a love thread, and Chu Kong he got some primordial spirit back after passing the tribulation. But unfortunately without memory when they have to go into the but Xiang Yun had a potion that if she drinks the no memory spell she will remember everything for the second tribulation. That's when they started to get closer with eachother and Xiang Yun started to fall in love with Chu Kong and when the tribulation ended Chu Kong started to have a soft spot for her and started to fall in love with her. I really liked in each tribulation that Xiang Yun and Chu Kong sacrifice for each other each time with a hesitation.

I find that too much was going on for just 12 episodes

I don't know. I just felt that A LOT was taking place in the space of just 12 episodes that I was always playing catch up due to this. Like, this series started off good; a lot of things were added, and then I just kind of wanted to finish it in 2024 for my MDL 2024 challenge.

The evil guy (Kim Young So) like his hand was in EVERYTHING evil (organ trafficking, stolen artefacts, wanting to live for eternity, just to name a few). I personally felt that it was a bit too much. I also felt a little confused because he said that it was a mistake when Shota killed Jo Hin Dal's sister; the only reason why he was following his orders. I don't know if he truly meant to or if it really was a mistake.

What I must say is that the comedy is there as well as the action scenes, so I am grateful for that. Hwang De Myung's delivery in both the comic side and the action side of his character was truly enjoyable. This is my second time watching the works of JooWon and I am more impressed here than with the movie 'Carter.'

Better than the first one

I finished this yesterday and I still can’t stop thinking about this!
For me it’s crazy that the second part is actually better than the first part bcs usually second parts of a movie or drama series are not as good as the first one. Squid Game proved the opposite, that with a better story and more amazing characters, you can definitely create a good story.

Here are my favorite things and reasons that made season 2 better than season 1:

1. In this season it’s not about just playing the games. Now Gi-hun is revolting against the creators of the game. And while he is in the games, there are many unexpected twists for example with new games.
2. Gong Yoo’s performance in episode 1 alone is worth watching it! From the bread vs lottery concept, to the russian roulette scene, his performance was impeccable!!!! What an amazing actor he is and how well he played the suit man!!! His final scene is the most epic scene of a character in a Kdrama in history!!!! The way he looks into the camera and blows his head off!!! I still cannot get over that scene! How can they make such a brutal scene ao aesthetically pleasing!!!
3. The rest of the drama together with this scene, has amazing cinematography!!!! I feel like it is even better than in season 1.
4. Less gory! I think this connects to the 3rd point. Thankfully they cut some gory scenes and now they focused more on the cinematography! In season 1 there were more disturbing scenes of the victims and how they took their organs out. In season 2 there is only one such scene Thank God! Those scenes were the reason I didn’t like Squid Game so much.
5. T.O.P. from Big Bang is playing a drug addicted Rapper names Thanos hahaha so basically he is playing himself!!!! This is genius!!! And his acting skills are AMAZING!!!! He is even cooler than I thought! In season 1 there was a gangster and his minions and that annoying woman who gut fcked by him. And they were both SO ANNOYING!!! Thanos was less annoying and he brought some funny elements into the dark twisted story 😂 Although he is obviously a bad character, he is one of the bad guys who make a series more interesting due to their unexpected behaviour. I was really sad when he died tbh…
His friend is more annoying and an actual douchebag! The way he killed the pretty girl omgggg! A frigging heartless monster! Thanos would have never done that!!!!
6. In general the characters this time were far better and more interesting than in the last season. Apart from Gihun I only liked the North Korean girl and the Indian guy. The gradnpa turned out to be one of the shittiest characters in the history of dramas!!! This time we have the frontman as 001 who is imo still more interesting than the old man. Then Gihun’s friend is more loyal in season 2 than the friend he had in season 1. That man was a bastard! He literally deceived the Indian guy!!!
Then obviously Thanos is much more fun than the gangsta guy from s1, and the shaman might be creepy but she is much more interesting than the woman who fcked the shaman. Then we have the pregnant gurl who is still a nice replacement of the North Korean girl. Maybe not as cool as her but still good enough. And ofc we have the transgender woman!!! Now this is a thing that is kind of a taboo to show in Korean dramas. The LGBTQ+ community and topics around it are not talked about in Korean society much and you can see that by the way the old woman thinks about it. However she finally accepts her and even saves her life in the last episode. So I see it as a sign to tell the Korean society to be more understanding and accepting of the LGBTQ+ community!!! And seeing how popular this series is not only worldwide but also in Korea, I hope that it will bring some level of acceptance! I think the relationship of the Trans woman with the old woman is very crucial and also smart from the producers! Genius!!!
7. More Korean games!!! In season 1 the Dalgona game was the only Korean game i think. And squid game ofc. But Red Light Green Light, Tug of War, Marbles are all games we know in other countries too. This season they changed most of the games! So far we have only seen 3 games and 2 of them were new but the second round consisted of many games and all of them were Korean, so brandnew for us! Except maybe the spinning top! But the episode with round 2 was one of my favorites as well! And then round 3 was also kind of a new game! We do have carousels but seeing the formation of groups was new to me. Although that game was a bit boring it had some twists as well. Thanos actually made that game more interesting and fun 😂

So far these were all of the good things i think. Lets have a look at some of the not ao good things or stuff that I didn’t like so much:
1. Less gory yes but they still kept the scene at night where they kill each other with forks… That scene was already disturbing in season 1 and was disturbing again in season 2… I wish they changed that scene in season 2 and made sth unexpected out of it…
2. They used the opening song of Reply 1988 in the scene of the mini games!!! I didnt like it that much because for me that song strictly belongs to Reply 1988!!! Like how dare they take it and make it into a squid game soundtrack!!! I hope people will forget about that song in that scene. And yes I do think it was a tribute to Reply 1988 as it starts with the Seoul Olympics in 1988, and the second round of 5 mini games does remind of the Olympic Games somehow. I still didn’t like it tho. They already paid a tribute to Reply 1988 in a scene when a character says they live in Ssangmun dong, the streets where Reply 1988 takes place. So imo that was enough tribute.

All in all, I really liked Squid Game season 2 and it was more than what I expected!

Families

I don’t know why it took me so long to watch this drama; however, I am glad I stuck with it. Jeong Bo Seok is one of my favorite supporting actors ever since I saw him in “Listen to My Heart”. I cried a lot. I especially cried for Gang Jae. I was very surprised at how much I cried for Tae II. Once I heard his upbringing my heart just broke for him. I should’ve known that the actor Lee Kyu Han would make me feel for him. He does tragic son so well. He got to me in the drama “Graceful Family”, too.

My biggest disappointment was that the cold hearted and cold blooded Chairman Nam was the culprit and I saw no one, except Choi Hyo Dong, blame him.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed this drama even though it got a little draggy.

( my opinion on this )

I know many people didn't like this drama but in my opinion this drama was pretty good but it be better if it wasn't so rushed, I do think it needs more episodes. Nie Chi and Lin Ge met as children ( Childhood friends ) when they both sneak into the skating rink of a sports school which where Fang Chao dad's work ( Fang Chao is Lin Ge's Childhood friend and Childhood sweetheart ) When Nie Chi first met Lin Ge he was impress by her competitiveness while when they race so he recommend her to the coach ( and he fell in love with her since ) but unfortunately Nie Chi had to move to Beijing and Lin Ge worked very hard to become a short track speed skater. When Nie Chi left Fang Chao and Lin Ge went to the sport school and Lin Ge lived with Fang Chao. But many years later Nie Chi and Lin Ge met again and worked their way up to become world champions while getting more closer. ( There so much more! but you guys have to watch it )

Therefore I think this drama have potential if they add more episode and don't rush the story.

( I love how Nie Chi loves Lin Ge and be there for her when she needs help and help Fang Chao too with how to improve )

So much fun, so much heartbreak, so much love

Whoa, this one packs a PUNCH! Once the heartbreak starts, they crank the dial up to TEN and it STAYS THERE A WHILE! D*mn, I had a hard time making through this one because of this, it really jerked those tears! But it’s all good in the end, so it’s worth it. :)

The acting was GREAT in this! Especially the ML. His heartbreak is so palpable! But there is also a lot of humor in it. It’s a bit silly, but the whole premise is only bought by throwing away logic in the first place, so if you picked this title knowing it’s premise, you can’t complain about it after the fact. :) Made me laugh a lot. And cry a lot. It was quite enjoyable. Maybe not the deepest of stories or characters but deep enough to believe and care about. Their love was quite believable, imo, and wonderful to watch. Excellent chemistry between the leads and everyone else. The side characters were surprisingly interesting too, and all of them had good actors palying the roles.

Very very funny too, for the first third or more and then sporadically from there. Was worth my time and emotional investment. Was never bored. Interesting to watch all the time, if sometimes a bit emotionally exhausting. I will certainly want to revisit this one in the future.

Love at its finest

Do you know that feeling you get when you have just finished a really good book or series and you are just left feeling empty, like there is a void that needs to be filled, and only the memories you have created over the last few hours can soothe the emptiness inside? This is how I feel right now.

The redemption arc written for Ming is the best one I have ever witnessed in any BL. I love how they did not make him turn over a new leaf out of being sorry but instead made him suffer through love and feel its merciless assault on the soul. They gave his character a rebirth through hard grief. I call it hard grief because knowing someone died and seeing a body is one thing, but not knowing if someone is dead or alive and no body to see, well that is hell on earth.

Watching Joe mourn his old self was so moving in a way I have never considered. I saw a quote that says "Many people die at 25 but are buried at 70." This quote came to mind because here Joe is mourning the loss of his body and old self, but still having a second chance. There are people who have lost themselves for whatever reason and are not really living; they are surviving for the sake of various reasons. My point is when you are lucky enough to get a second chance do not let it slip away, and if you do not get one then make one because you will only be in this life, this moment in this space only once.

When Ming let go of Joe, but could not stand it for even a second and ran to him, wrapping his arms around him; refusing to let him go. Now, that is romance, heartbreak and love all at once. Writing this now, one couple comes to mind and it is Lu Feng and Xiao Chen from A Round Trip To Love. Those two were "desperate love" personified. I always say that for me Chinese BLs and writing are above the rest, well tonight, Thailand hit the same level for me. I have only ever experienced this type of portrayal of desperation and love from a Chinese BL. Well done Thailand.

Ming waited at home cooking for Joe for two years; fulfilling Joe's dream as if calling him home is one incredible act of love.

I am still amazed at how well Ming's character was written to sway the audience (me) so well. I went from hating him to rejoicing in his torment, to feeling my gut move with grief, to finally loving him. The fact that his character alone told a whole love story is just writing at its best.

Joe is a fool for love. The way he folded so quickly when Ming started to make it up to him lol. What I truly love though is that apology Ming gave him. I think it says a lot that even though all was basically settled they saw it important for that apology to take place. That scene in itself is a 10. I think oftentimes people forgive and move on and words cannot change anything, but those three words, "I am sorry" can shift so much in a person wronged and even in the one doing the apology. Apologies are best given in this life because the next life perhaps is not so accommodating or does not even exist, so apologise in the life you are sure of.

I kept putting off watching this series for months. I would come in here frequently and say I am going to start this series but for whatever reason never got around to it. Here I am now on the eve of 2025 completing it and giving it a 10. Closing off a year that for me was full of successes academically and occupationally. I will not forget this one anytime soon. My Stand-In: Uncut 10/10 one of my favourite and proudest 10. This is how you close off the 2024 BL season in style.
