During the Japanese rule of Taiwan, the aboriginal Seediq were forced to lose their own culture and give up their faith. Men were subject to harsh labor and kept from traditional hunting; whereas women had to serve the Japanese policemen and their families by doing the household work and giving up their traditional weaving work. Above all, they were forbidden to tattoo their faces. And these tattoos were seen as the Seediq's read moretraditional belief to transform themselves into Seediq Bale ("true humans"). Mona Rudao, the protagonist, witnessed the repression by the Japanese over a period of 30 years.

The film Seediq Bale depicts the Wushe Incident, which occurred in central Taiwan during the Japanese rule.

I can tell a LOT of work went into making this film and a lot of money. Still, it found it hard going to appreciate it. I think a lot of that has to do with a lack of connection for me with the content and story, so it's my failing rather than the movie's. Yet, I've watched many other movies like this from countries I have no knowledge of and liked them better. So...I'm not sure. Per wiki, there was a lot of 'artistic license' taken with this movie also. 7/10

There is nothing confusing about this movie! Perhaps the international release version is? This movie is actually a duology. International release is heavily cut one movie combining both so I can see how it could be.

I've heard a lot of complaints about how this movie had to many names in it so people kept on getting confused on who was who and what they did. Personally I didn't have that issue. Do I like this movie? Yes, it was a bit slow but after the first 30 minutes I didn't even realize how long it had been until it ended. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not, I don't know why but it's really not rewatchable in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the quality of some of most of the cg in this movie but it wasn't horrible.
