Waited 2 years and it was worth the wait (for me at least hahaha)

Honestly, I have been waiting for 2 years for this show, and all of a sudden it just airs! I was so happy to watch another Allen Ren drama.

Plot:
The story plot is a normal undercover police drama you would watch. It is about an undercover police officer who tries to dismantle a drug ring from the inside. The plot was very consistent with Mu Qing slowly dismantling the drug ring by taking out each of the members in the "shi da jing gan". This slowly leads to his identity being exposed, but he isn't ready to give up! (not gonna explain more, but this is where I am now) :)

[SPOILER] We find out that Ou Kexin is not actually the real Ou Kexin, she is actually Mu Qing/Yuan Wen's ex-wife who did not actually die in the explosion, she just underwent face surgery and took on the role of Ou Kexin and is another undercover police in the drug ring in Yun Gang. [SPOILER]

Ending: They left us at a cliffhanger... I am soooo CONFUSED!!!!

Cast:

I really liked the cast, each played their character very well. Allen Ren who played Mu Qing/Yuan Wen was amazing as usual. His eye contact was totally everything, even though his contract states that he isn't doing any kissing scenes, his actions say enough, and it's worth it! Additionally, Allen ren had some really good fight scenes and he was able to express his emotions very well.

Ou Kexin, played by Janine Chang was also good, however, I think they overdubbed her a little too much. I thought her actual voice would've suited the drama much better. But overall, she was great and I loved seeing those two as a pair :)

The side characters either from the 84 team or the members in the drug ring all did a good job playing their roles. I thought that the "84 team" didn't get enough screen time (especially for Rong Yao to tell them who their undercover agents were like we completely didn't get to see that which I believed was important). Overall, the cast did amazing.

Music:
10/10 - music fit the mood throughout the drama

Rewatch Value:
8/10 - for police, action, and undercover-related dramas I believe that rewatching is not worth it because you already know what's going to happen, however, there are certain episodes I would go back and watch just for Allen Ren hahaha!

Nice drama!

It is a nice drama! A very addictive episode ending, makes you to keep watching one after another episode. This is the first Chinese action drama I watched and pretty cool. The acting, scene, actions are quite on point. Definitely recommended to everyone.

Suspense is good for each episodes. Acting of the main leads are superb especially Allen Ren.

Seems like this drama is not so popular but for me, it’s definitely a good one. Most of the time I prefer Chinese modern romance genre. I came from a nice drama of Allen, Ms Crow and Mr Lizard. And I love this too!

Mostly I always do positive reviews but with this one I waited two years so I have to express my opinion.
It started off well with suspense and all but then the storyline just got boring and the episodes dragged on. I then guessed that the female lead was his fiancé so this was another down point for me but I carried on watching to see how it went further. One little thing dragged on for so many episodes. Even when the male lead found out that Ou Kexin was his fiancé, there was no passion in their relationship. It was slow moving and just not it. They were hardly together. And the ending! I mean they made us go through so much the least they could have done is given us a truly happy and satisfying ending.
The only thing I liked about this drama was the brotherhood and friendship between Li Rousheng and Mu Qing. I knew they would have the ending they did but it was worth it for them.
Overall, I was truly disappointed with this drama.

Alternate Point of View Story

[Quite late to write this review] I finished watching the drama in a rush after Mr. Ou is highly suspecting Muqing to be the mole in Group K. Not saying that the plot got bad after that episode but I was always on edge of the seat when watching it lol.
So, I think of a realistic alternative plot for this drama, and of course, it was kinda boring but it was reassuring since the ending is very confusing.

(Don't take this seriously, this is just an opinion since the ending is not satisfying)
If the deaths are realistic and Li Ruosheng is the main lead / the point of view of this story with character development, it would turn out in a very satisfying ending or probably ok ending (without taking anyone's side). Li Ruosheng has a very sad background, both his parents died and no one was truly close to him until he met Muqing. He said from the beginning that he had no choice but to work in this field related to drugs. Rong Yu definitely did not survive the explosion but it is very wrong for Rong Yao to vent all his anger on Liu Yuanwen at this time when he went undercover. After multiple incidents, realistically, Muqing will be killed by Mr. Ou in that specific warehouse, and Li Ruosheng will be taking a break from all business activities from this point / might be taking a step back from his current position that Muqing built. After 2-3 months, Group K realizes that problems within their organization completely disappeared. Cong Tou will not work with Li Ruosheng because their positions in the group are different. It all went back from the beginning for Li Ruosheng, all alone even with many hitmen that would obey his order but no one was really on his side, so he escaped quietly from Group K and would probably be working somewhere else or accepting his fate (confessing to the police). In my opinion, he won't bother to recheck Muqing's real identity as it would be too much for him although deep inside he probably knew but wouldn't accept it as there is no physical evidence... since Muqing died when they were really close. As stated in the ending "I'm not afraid of dying or getting arrested but all these lies for 3 years"

A little bit of everything and nothing

If you want to assess this as a undercover cop drama, it doesn’t pass as a high quality one.

If you want to assess this as a romance drama, forget it.

If you want to assess this as a bromance, well, there is some.

I have mixed feelings about this show. It was watchable and fast paced, as you continue to see how each plot point unravels with the male lead’s hard work as the undercover who worked his way up and taking down each of the drug cartel’s leaders. I didn’t fast forward, which indicates there is quite a bit going on in the story.

However, as you keep watching, you wonder how is it possible the cartel was taken down so easily by some undercover cops. Which makes the story too unbelievable. And you will need to suspend any notion that these cartel leaders have half a brain.

Additionally, the characters are too one dimensional. Everyone only cares about their job, there is little to no scene about the motivations and inner thoughts for any of the leads nor the supporting cast, beyond what is needed to move the plot forward.

There is little to no romance. If there were more romantic scenes between the two leads to show how the male lead changed in his feelings for the female lead before he found out her identity (ie falling in love all over again) it would have been a much better show.

The brotherhood between the undercover cop and his friend in the cartel was good to watch, except to be reminded that this brotherhood was built on 3 years of lies.

The music is also also average/ subpar. I was disappointed in the ending.

This is a very plot driven drama with zero character development. If you are into that, then watch this drama.

Could be better !

Beautifully executed story !!! Main Characters ML & FL are very well crafted !
it's a shame every one else is a little one-dimensional and on the nose ! it's a collection of classic characters simply moving about ! And quite a collection at that , made the drama long with so many moving part that could easily be clipped without affecting the general outcome of it all!
Actors are on point though ! no flaws in anyone's performance!
The tone is lost and the tension fails to rise as the story lingers a bit too long! It is a well crafted story , i blame production !
Could be better !

Every scene every twist is amazing how the ml destroy mafia gang is absolutely amazing.
Ml friendship with rao sheng is like they become brothers but later when Rao sheng find out his real identity that scenes is worth watching.
Chemistry between the leads is ok bcz there relationship is something else it's a big twist and secret, and that's cool
I really like the fact that ml is always ahead of his enemies and truly mastermind
You guys should watch this amazing masterpiece

Slow burn plot.

ok we're just an episode away from the final so here goes -

long story short, this is a slow burn drama. there isn't any strong passion romance if that's what you're looking for. the plot and action builds up slowly, and (really) systematically toward the eventual finale that we're seeing or expecting for. i hesitated if i should write a review for this show because i can't call it a LIKE, but i wouldn't say i dislike it either. there're loopholes in the plot for sure, considering how it's a battle between the black (drug syndicate) and the white (cops + undercover), and how the ML and FL seem to always have everything under control (the drug dealers can't be that oblivious, are they?) but i supposed it is truly a show where you would keep on watching just as the episodes keep running.

as we would already guess, the ML and FL are undercover for the police force and they used to be lovers, except that the ML was kept in the dark throughout — at least up until the last few episodes — because he thought she had died in an explosive incident caused by him in the past (wow such a turn it up in the plot you'll only find in c-dramas honestly). in a twist of fate, the FL went through surgery and became an undercover too, hiding the truth from everyone, including the ML and her brother, who's another cop.

just as long as you sit tight and get through the first few episodes, you're pretty much set for the remaining of the show. i can't deny that the FL's entrance in the show, before we actually figure out her undercover identity, is slightly annoying. she leeches onto the ML and with her princess attitude, it was pretty much a no for me. but it all went well once we put the pieces together and made sense of her character. their pairing worked out decently (of course, she knew him since forever!) and it was a comfortable watch. at this point, i've also got to give kudos for the relationship between the ML and SML (mu qing and li ruosheng), this brotherhood would be such a painful one to watch once the SML faces the ML's betrayal (i'm guessing it's in the last episode).

all in all, this drama focused a lot on character build up which is much appreciated for a theme like this. i'm quite glad it didn't jump into all that c-drama romance. it's definitely a slow burn so if you're looking for plenty of action and quick progression, this probably wouldn't be for you. but otherwise, this should be a decent one to past some time, and for a slow watch.
