Cute but not cringy

I'm sick and tired of the cutesy cdramas where the girl is a complete brainless ditz and the guy is a super achiever, super handsome ass who has never heard of manners or consent.

But this show despite being 'cute' is alot of fun and has surprisingly alot of depth. The girl has spunk, grit and has great growth outside of the love angle. Her focus is not on getting the 'master' to love her. In fact he is the one who keeps looking for her attention so we are spared the customary fawning over the male lead. Despite the outlandish premise, the characters feel like real people.

The acting is also good. Both the leads can act well.
The actress does not go into the annoying cringy territory and pulls off comedy with ease. Also all these cold tsundre type of characters are usually played with actors with zero skills who think barking at the girl and having no facial expressions is acting. But here the actor is wonderful. He has amazing expressions and does not let the character fall into the cliche category.

In the last month I've seen atleast 10 super popular young love cdramas (lockdown) and 90% of them are just rubbish. This one is good. Really good. Not a complete 10 bec the last 3-4 episodes are useless, sappy, and badly written. But everything before that is A+

How could you not like this drama? It had the charm of a simple cliche cdrama that sometimes fall a bit flat, but you love them anyway, BUT but this one didn't fall flat. It was done very well, where you have loveable mains from start to finish, a silly cliche plot, and chemistry that you couldn't help but love. And this drama knew exactly what it was, and I loved the little disclaimers in episode one basically stating that this drama is supposed to be silly and cliche and not to try cross-dressing to play on a collegiate team. That this was a comic and none of the events are real or would happen in real life, so don't take the drama too seriously. The writer knew the direction they wanted to go with the story and didn't want the viewer to worry about "fact-checking" and just sit back and relax and laugh at a romance between a cross-dressing girl and a hockey star who has face blindness.

But I couldn't help but compare this drama to its cdrama brother, Skate Into Love, that came out this year, only because of hockey. Don't get me wrong, both of these dramas are two of my favorites from 2020, but for different reasons. I felt that Skate Into Love was more of an ode to colligate athletes wanting to be better in order to represent and bring China glory, with a little romance between two winter athletes who became one another's support system and motivation. My Unicorn girl, even though it had more hockey games and scenes, wasn't about hockey. It was about a quicky romance between a freshman hockey player who has face blindness and secretly seeks out his mother's approval and to acknowledge his passion for hockey, and a girl who cross-dresses to make money playing hockey to support her brother, and accidentally makes the men's hockey team at the same university that rejected her from the figure skating program she tried out for. This drama was also about the relationship between the freshman hockey team including the two mains and a "brotherhood" that was built and motivated everyone. I loved how the drama was 90% about the two mains and their relationship, but it was about their relationship being built alongside their team members. We got to know some of the backstories of their teammates and how those backstories became motivators in their playing today.

It added to the love I had for this drama - there have been many dramas in the recent past where I didn't enjoy the side characters whatsoever and it lowered my score in my review. Even the minor, minor characters, I loved, including Miao Miao who was one of the first cdrama actresses I was introduced to and loved. She was a random surprise and a random confidant in this drama and was needed even if she was in 2 or 3 eps. It was hard not to like certain characters. I will say though, I wasn't a huge fan of Sang Zhan and Meng Na's relationship, BUT I was a huge fan of them separately, and did appreciate that it didn't come off forced.

I think I couldn't give this drama a perfect 10 was because I felt like the drama revolved around Wen Bing and Sang Tian's relationship, but the writer tried to make it about hockey. Yes, Wen Bing was passionate about his playing, but I felt that the drama focused more on him figuring out his face blindness. Yes, it would help him play better, but I feel like if he was passionate about the sport, he would have figured out how to be a better player with it. Then there was that HUGE game in ep 24 with their rival school, but I felt that the game wasn't played up like the competitions in Skate Into Love, and ultimately, it was a lame showcase. The final game showed me that the characters didn't grow as better players, but they grew as better team players? Which should go hand in hand, but apparently Wen Bing forgot that his biggest issue was not being a team player unless he was playing with Sang Tian...which...told me he didn't improve whatsoever. But I know that this drama wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, but I just didn't enjoy their final showcase.

But with only that one thing, this drama was surprisingly really good! I loved the relationship between Wen Bing and Sang Tian throughout their journey. Typically, I am not a fan of the male leads who pick on female leads, but at the most, I thought Wen Bing was teasing Sang Tian and seeing how far she would go with her cross-dressing. WHICH was one of the other things I really appreciated about this drama. Right from the beginning, Wen Bing figured out that she was cross-dressing and decided to watch over her and keep her secret, but also tease her in the process because she was lightweight fun to tease. But it got to a point where I felt that the main actress wasn't even trying to keep her secret and everyone was chill every time Bing and Tian would accidentally kiss. I'm thinking everyone just thought that Tian was a feminine guy and loved him anyway because Tian was a great friend and teammate. I would say though that my favorite character in this drama was William. I honestly would love nothing more than to have a Wen Bing or William like me romantically.

Also, can we talk about that WILD breakup scene that was super intense and didn't fit in with the rest of the drama? I think it was one of the most intense break-up scenes from any cdrama I've ever seen and I cried a bit. But it also showed how strong both characters were regardless that they are in a silly cliche storybook drama.

Overall, I am happy that Darren Chen is finally the lead in a drama. He did very well and I feel in love with him. His little mannerisms and facial expressions made me laugh and smile the whole time.

Don't overthink the plot! Super Cute :)

I went into this with zero expectations and only discovered this show by accident BUT...I really, really enjoyed myself. Darren did such a great job! I haven't seen any of his previous work but he was the perfect fit for this role. Although the kisses were on the tame side - it did not detract from the overall cuteness...I will say the last two episodes were very cheesy and they literally threw in every cliche in the book LOL :)

I would recommend this if you want something fluffy, cute, little to no angst, and a fantastic ML. I normally do not watch shows that have not finished airing but I made an exception for this one and I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm bit sad it's over and now I'm on the hunt for the next silly rom-com to keep me smiling during these tough times.

Melt my heart away , cute and simple love story

This drama is amazing !! AGAIN !!! I HAVE TO SAY 24 episodes is the perfect amount!!! This drama was so cute and sweet, I might get diabetes lol jk.. but definitely a joy to watch. I remember the male lead as Hua ze lei, that character is so different. Fell in love with the male lead after this drama lol. He's cute when he smiles

1) the chemistry was phenomenal!!! like even though many kissing scenes were just a peck on the lip, it was super cute and you get the tingly feeling. haha maybe because they are roommates and always spending time together, so its believeable !! lol within 4 episodes they peck on the lips twice :)
2) Storyline is kinda cliche but its light hearted and sweet. Female lead Sang tian some how gets into her mother's alta mater but not through the major of ice skating. She instead gets into the male ice hockey team. This is where she meets the male lead Wen Bing. Wen Bing from day one already knew that she's a girl. ( I cant stand gender benders when the male lead is dumb af,, like doesnt know she a girl until like later episodes, but this one is good because he knows from the start). Sang tian basically is Wen bing's only cure for being able to see faces clearly. They kiss and he sees clearly for a bit. The story revolves around them in the hockey team how they first when from bickering to falling in love and helping and supporting each other, and also developing friendships from the team and having competitions. Every bit of the story fit and flowed perfectly.
3) second male lead is cute too hopefully he will be a main lead in a drama someday >_<
I give it a 10/10 !! can't wait to watch maiden holmes

Light-hearted comedy worth watching

I find the first two episodes too cliche but gets better from there.
The FL and ML pulled it off very well. ML is a person who does things for his team mates in secret. He also keeps FL's identity a secret and watches out for her. She is a selfless friend and team mate. She helps ML out when she discovered that due his condition (Prosogpagnosia) he is unable to recognize faces during a competition. He can recognize people's faces for a short period of time every time he kisses her. FL is a person who will stand up for her team mates . She's willing sacrifice her happiness for ML as long as ML is able to fulfill his dream as an ice hockey player in Liuye University. FL and ML are adorable together. This is a light-hearted comedy. I would have loved to see FL do more of figure skating . Few funny moments. Thoroughly enjoyed this drama, more than what I expected when I started the first few episodes.

Cliché but well done

Story: The story for this drama is no foreign to viewers, but how it was plotted through the entire series, it was nicely done.

Acting: The acting was good. I loved their characters.

Music: The songs were lit! The music scoring was also well done. I loved every song in this series. My fave was the soundtrack Be There. I downloaded it because the melody of the song was just so nice. I just can't get it off my head.

Rewatch value: I'd probably gonna rewatch this some time soon if I want to watch some cutesy typical drama series and I'd prolly choose this one.

Overall, nice and good.

Heartwarming

Everything about this drama was so heartwarming and healing, I didn't expect to enjoy it so much, i thought there would be episodes where I would skip part of the minor characters. But each love story was so unique in its own way, the pairs were all meant for each other wouldn't have paired anyone differently. Cried a few times over their touching friendship scenes. Healed me in many ways. will watch again.
If anyone is looking for a heartwarming cliche drama I would strongly recommend this, I personally never felt it was so cheesy, it was just sweet reaching the right level not even going overboard. The story didn't only focus on the main leads and their development all other pairs had an equal share and no relationship felt rushed we were all able to see how other couples slowly fell for each other which is usually quite rare. I liked how they had episodes focusing on the other team members as well other dramas would just focus on the leads and how they would go through struggles and problems together but this one focused on each individual member, their struggles and hardships to be apart of the team. The friendship between the team members made me tear up quite a few times. PLUS the OST, hits at the right moment, "i'll be there for you" is like my new wedding song. LOVE LOVE LOVE

Sweet, Sweeter& Sweetest

Just the right amount of fluffiness. Each character had their gradual development and each member of the cast has done a great job at making us feel the often cheesiness. Realizing dreams, supporting dreams, reconnecting with families; this mixture was portrayed without excess coaxing. Though the ending feels like rushed but after the long, 'When will they exchange their secrets and confess?' the timeframe cut short actually blended in. The Ost of this drama is as soothing as the drama, especially given the fact that I watched it after a series of power struggle in historical dramas. In short this drama is actually the sweetener like the leads character name: Tian as in sweetness.

Very touching and sweet

At first I avoided this because of the storyline. Most female cross dressing dramas make me feel uncomfortable for the male lead. Seeing his discomfort as he falls for someone he believes is a guy makes me uncomfortable too. But the male lead finds out she’s a girl very early on so I really liked how they handled that aspect of the story.

The other thing I don’t like about modern cross dressing dramas is how unattractive the female lead often looks when dressed in male attire. I can’t help doubting the male leads attraction to her when she’s dressed in men’s clothes with super short hair. But this female leads outfits look like something a cute tomboy type of girl might wear. And even though she’s in a wig for most of the drama, her long slender neck makes her look very feminine and graceful. Her small delicate oval face also gives her a very dainty appearance. I think she looked just as cute with the wig as she did with her long hair. And that’s saying a lot because I usually absolutely hate it when someone wears a wig in a drama.

When I heard that the male lead picks on the female lead a lot I was worried I wouldn’t like him. Boy was I wrong! He doesn’t pick on her in a mean way. You can tell he likes to tease her because he finds her reactions adorable. His cute little smile he flashes us every time she gets all feisty or does something he finds cute is so endearing. I think his adorable smiles made him so appealing and charming. And the way he always took the blame for her when she was about to get in trouble was so sweet.

I also really appreciate that the female lead isn't weak or easily pushed around. She’s feisty and stands up for herself. And when she retaliated by putting wasabi in the male leads toothpaste I just about died laughing. It was made even cuter when the male lead laughed about it too. You just can’t help but love him.

This drama has a lot of great side characters that you can’t help but root for. You can feel the warmth and friendship of this group of friends as they help each other through various trials. The underlying theme of how fate and destiny play a big part in our path in life is intertwined throughout the drama. And they did a great job of incorporating the unicorn theme into it too. The unicorn symbolizes the courage and strength of youth. But when the male lead tells the female lead that the unicorn also symbolizes unwavering love and gives her a unicorn necklace, I won’t lie, I got misty eyed.

What I didn’t like about this drama was the excessive amount of cliches. It was overloaded with them. And sometimes it got a little cheesy. But they redeemed themselves by putting a refreshing twist on the cliches. And the acting was outstanding which helped tone down that little bit of cheesiness.

Overall this drama was very touching. When it ended I was left feeling really emotional and very touched. It’s been a long time since a drama has made me feel that way. Don’t miss out on this gem.

Great story

This story had she is the man vibe! A girl who unexpectly change to a boy and became a icehockey player. FL did a great job acting like a guy. All the cast had a great chemistry. I really liked how the ML used his facial expression. It was on point! And the sound from the cat was really funny.

The icehockeyteam members where all really great. They all had there own rol. Also the relationship between the coach and uncle from ML was a nice extra.
When you watch this you will slowly fall in love with the main couple.

The story starts off with a male lead that's a hockey star that seems arrogant but isn't really and your average cinderella female lead that is just trying to live her life and fulfill; not so much a promise, but a quest she's given herself to fill her mom's shoes. The two cross paths and the rest is history. They're connected in every way; they bond really well, they have great chemistry, but like most cross dressing drama's, she's a "guy" for a majority of the show lol even though it's just something that's obvious and well, it's fine because honestly it worked out, everyone was nice about it, I really liked how the story flowed; I was laughing out loud and cheesing like crazy at a lot of the parts; so even though it was truly a really slow burning romance, the chemistry was there, the feelings were there and all in all, it was a great and positive watch.

I adore Darren Chen; after watching him in Meteor Garden, I've never been disappointed. I've seen him in reality shows and he's just good with his emotions and he was all around a goofy guy. Absolutely blown away by Sebrina Chen's acting, I've never seen her in anything I don't think and she was so positive and up beat; she played such a good actress and I loved the two together. Oh man, I really really liked everyone; even though some people didn't, I enjoyed the side stories. Li Jiu Lin played a great "best friend" lmao, I loved the brother and best friend; they were so supportive, I even kinda liked the annoying figure skater girl Na Na. And let's give it up for my girl Zhang Yu Xi that honestly played just a small part but she played such a big impacted part for our main lead; she's such a good actress in everything she does, it was a nice add on to this show.

I liked the music, it was a switch up between an average OST but then throwing in some English, it was kinda a banger tbh.

I don't think I would rewatch it right away but I would; when I need something goofy, fluffy, a pick me up show.

As a drama watching vet; this is your average, cliche, cross dressing drama but it's honestly such a classic story and feel; that it just feels right. Lol. I was thoroughly surprised how much I enjoyed this show because it was really like a filler but it was something even more over the top. It was overall...just good. I was laughing, I was surprised, I was bingeing the whole show; I literally was like on ep 5 and suddenly I'm ony ep 16 because I just kept watching it all day long. It was an easy watch, it was entertaining, it was a nice change away from wanting to take a break, it made me want to keep watching more shows on my list
