The book and the special are based on a real criminal case - named "Hikari City Mother and Child Murder Case". We learn the story from the perspective of the journalist Kitagawa, who tracks the trial of a teenage perpetrator of the crime. Special was cuted in to two parts. In real life, case received a lot of attention, not only because of the fight for the perpetrator to receive the death penalty, but also because the trial stretches from 1999 to the present day, an another appeal is underway.
