5 Overly Used Items from Dramalnd
As you all know, there are several differences between Western TV shows and Asian Dramas – that’s why most of us love them so much! It’s exciting to watch how things work in a completely different culture. But as we watch more and more we start to learn the similarities between the different dramas, and this includes the objects we recognize. Whether it’s delicious dumplings or watching a cellphone battery being thrown out of a phone for the ump-teenth time, there are definitely some objects which are repetitively used throughout Dramaland that we had never even known existed (or known they could be used that way!) before we entered the wonderful world of Dramaland. So, I’ve compiled a small list of 5 objects I’ve seen throughout my time in Dramaland again.... and again..... and again.

SPOILER ALERT: Most of the Drama examples I have used should not spoil the plot for you, but there is a spoiler for Rooftop Prince.

The common handkerchief in Dramaland is completely different to its use in western TV. Rather than being used to blow your nose it’s used for pure evil. The Handkerchief is most commonly seen over an innocent character’s mouth strangling them until they pass out. The use of the handkerchief is usually followed by the passed out character being taken away and/or trapped against their will somewhere unknown.

The chest binding bandages are something I never even knew existed until I first visited Dramaland. These are most commonly seen in gender-bender dramas by female characters trying to flatten out their chest in order to disguise themselves as men for one reason or another. Interestingly, in Dramaland when the chest binding bandages are paired up with male clothes and a short haircut this completely protects the female’s identity as a woman – no one will suspect a thing no matter how girly her face is or how high her voice is.

In almost every drama that I’ve seen someone gets drunk at some point - and it’s often Soju that does the job. Soju is most commonly seen with characters who have never touched a drop of alcohol in their life before. There are many different effects that Soju has on characters throughout Dramaland. Some of these include: making them confess their love/hatred to a person, making them accidentally kiss someone, making them pass out or to make them awkwardly throw up in front of a possible love interest. Soju can also take other forms throughout Dramaland these are generally Sake or Beer.

Couple Rings are an object I believe is relatively new to Dramaland, but they are nonetheless just as important and overused due to the fact that in older dramas they are usually seen in the form of a necklace. The use of Couple Rings in Dramaland is crucial though because they show us that the characters wearing them are now serious about each other. This usually means from this point that no crazy stalker, evil mother or any other obstacle they’ve had to overcome will ever break them apart. If it somehow does break them apart, the characters will repetitively look back at their couple rings and flashback to memories with each other.

Ramen (also known as Ramyun or Lamian) is probably the most commonly seen thing in the whole of Dramaland.  The use of Ramen is vast and can appear as simply as instant stuff cooked in a pot to as hardcore as a whole freaking shop owned by one of the characters. The use of Ramen in Dramaland makes our stomach groan in desperation to eat Ramen too. Ramen is usually consumed in huge amounts throughout the drama, and enviously in the realm of Dramaland it possesses the magical ability which enables you to eat as much as you like and gain no weight at all.

Examples of uses in Dramaland:
  • Gokusen/when the boys help with Kuma's family's Ramen shop
  • Dream High/when Jin Gook walks in on his hyung making Ramyun from a pot

You may notice that these 5 overly used objects are primarily from Rom-Com. I will admit that yes they are as I have mainly only watched Rom-Com Dramas because I enjoy them very much! So my question to you guys is: are there any overly used objects in Dramaland specific to other genres? Or did I miss any out from Rom-Com? What springs to mind for you at the mention of objects from Dramaland?

Thanks for reading :)
