Actress Youn Yuh Jung first South Korean to receive an Oscar nomination!

On Monday, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations list for 93rd Academy Awards and among the nominees was the veteran South Korean actress Youn Yuh-Jung, who received a nomination in Best Actress in a Supporting Role category for American film Minari.

Yuh-Jung became the first South Korean actress to get an Oscar nomination in 93 years. No previous actor or actress has ever received a nomination in acting categories, even when Parasite was nominated for gallons of awards, it failed to receive any acting nomination.

Yun, whose career spans over half a century rose to prominence for her role in Women of Fire in 1971 and continued to enthrall audiences with her stellar and breathtaking performances throughout her career.

Yuh-Jung has also been nominated and received several other international accolades for this film including BAFTA, Critics Choice Awards, National Board of Review, and Screen Actor Guild Awards.

It is also important to mention that four Asian filmmakers received nominations in Acting, Directing and International Film categories for the first time.

Korean born Minari’s lead actor, Steven Yeun, became the first East-Asian and Asian-American to receive leading Best Actor nomination, while Pakistani-British Riz Ahmed, became first South Asian and Best Acting nomination for his performance in Sound of Metal.

Chloe Zhao became the first Chinese filmmaker to receive Best Director nomination for Nomadland and Minari’s producer Christina Oh also a Korean-American received nomination in the Best Picture category as a producer.

MDL’s best rated film and one of the most popular Asian films in 2020, Better Days received nomination for Best International Film as an Hong Kong entry and not a Chinese entry, as the film's director is from Hong Kong.
