Best Moments From the K-drama “Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow

It's only a matter of time till we bid adieu to the fantasy K-drama "Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow". And I must admit, the end of the drama will leave a void in my life. The fantasy rom-com made us laugh, cry, and - at times - had us surprised with its refreshing storyline, thereby keeping us glued to our screens throughout.

So, to recall those good times here is an article that reminds you of some of the best moments from the K-drama that will live in our heads rent-free. Though this is not an exhaustive list, it certainly has a few moments which are everyone's favorite.

Note: The article contains spoilers from the drama.

1. Bu Yeon Asking Jang Uk to Marry Her

The first few episodes of the drama itself show us that Bu Yeon (Go Yoon Jung) is not our typical shy and coy female K-drama lead. Instead, she is among those who do not hesitate to speak their minds. Throughout the drama, Bu Yeon never fails to surprise us with her words and has a talent for deftly turning the most cringe scenes into the cutest moments.

One such moment is when she asks Jang Uk (Lee Jae Wook) to marry her. In episode 1, Jin Bu Yeon manages to escape Jinyowon and decides to confront her already-chosen husband to retreat from the marriage. But on her way, she meets Jang Uk and confidently asks him to marry her.

Just like anyone would be, Jang Uk is surprised by such a bold proposal. Bu Yeon even goes on to explain why he is the perfect husband material because of his power and ill relations with Jinyowon. She even tries to convince him by considering her for her looks.

Bu Yeon's frankness and unrelenting spirit, definitely put her on the list of the cutest K-drama female characters of all time.

2. Park Jin's Students " Savouring" His Delicacies

If there are any Park Jin (Yoo Joon Sang) moments that we will always remember, it's him serving his delicacies, especially to the Songrim mages. In ep 1, Seo Yul (Hwang Min Hyun) visits Songrim three years after the tragic incident that dropped on Daeho. He is joined by Jang Uk and Park Dang Gu (Yoo In Soo). And Park Jin just couldn't miss the chance to showcase his cooking skills and treat his students to a meal.

The trio try to gulp down the food and they couldn't have looked more adorable. The scene turns hilarious when Seo Yul politely refuses to have any more of the food, and Dang Gu clings to him while Jang Uk gives a subtle scornful look.

3. Bu Yeon Mistaking Seo Yul For Her Betrothed

In episode 2, Bu Yeon seeks Seo Yul to break their marriage and convince him to stop the search, without even realizing that Seo Yul isn't her betrothed.

She honestly says that she would not have run away from the wedding and married him had she met him earlier because he is handsome. But when she learns Seo Yul is not her fiance, she candidly says that she is relieved because it is now easier for her to give up on the marriage since the good-looking Seo Yul wasn't supposed to marry her anyway. Seo Yul is amused by her honesty.

Though Bu Yeon is upfront about her feelings, she manages to make the entire scene endearing with her cuteness. Go Yoon Jung gives the right amount of dramatization to her character which makes Bu Yeon lovable and bewitching.

4. Jang Uk Summoning Fireflies

In episode 4, Bu Yeon unintentionally breaks the stone tower Jang Uk built for Mu Doek. She decides to fix it which takes her the entire day. On her way back, she finds it difficult to navigate her path through the dark forest.

Bu Yeon is lost and in a state of despair because she learns that Jang Uk loved someone very dearly and built the stone tower for her. Frustrated by Jang Uk, stuck in a dark forest all by herself, and scared of the wild creatures that roam free, Bu Yeon starts crying.

And just then, fireflies come surrounding her and lighting up her path to guide her through the darkness. The beautiful setting and the melodious music made the scene enchanting.

Bu Yeon initially thinks her powers summoned them. But when she meets the servants of the Jang family, the fireflies start retreating. At that moment, she notices Jang Uk and realizes he is the one who assembled them. He has been furtively watching her and guiding her safely through the dark forest.

Despite his cold demeanor, Jang Uk is warm at heart and even modest, as he does not show himself to Bu Yeon while secretly helping her.

5. Jealous Jang Uk

While season 1 portrayed Jang Uk as an immature and picky young master, season 2 gave us a mature and responsible Jang Uk. But despite the transformation of the character, he can still be a kid from time to time, especially when Bu Yeon is friends with Seo Yul.

In episode 6, Bu Yeon tells Jang Uk that she thought it was Seo Yul who she was supposed to marry. And if she had met him first, she wouldn't have run away.

Later in the episode, Bu Yeon even tells him that she will be going to Danhyanggok with Seo Yul to find out more about her true identity. Jang Uk says out of jealousy that Seo Yul agreed to go with her because he is his friend, and Bu Yeon shouldn't be friends with him.

Jang Uk’s reaction was a treat for our eyes. He also accidentally made a subtle confession and hinted that he seriously considers Bu Yeon as his beloved.

6. Naksu’s Confession

Episode 8 finally gave the moment we all have been waiting for - or maybe the second-most awaited moment after the upcoming scene where Jang Uk discovers Bu Yeon’s true identity - i.e. Naksu recollecting her lost memories. When she realizes she is the infamous assassin Naksu who inflicted grave pain on her beloved, her spirit is broken. And she decides to leave Jang Uk and return to Jinyowon Jang Uk is confused by Bu Yeon's sudden change of behavior.

Bu Yeon tells him that she remembers her past and there was a man she loved dearly, even more than he loved her. Her eyes brim with tears and she gives a heartfelt confession she never got the chance to make.

It is agonizing to see Naksu confessing to Jang Uk without him even realizing it. This scene will definitely stay with us forever.
