Ryu Seung Wan-directed Smugglers has received an invitation to compete in the Orbita section of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival.

Renowned as Spain's most famous film festival, the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival is a cinema hub for movie enthusiasts.

In the upcoming 56th edition, Smugglers is set to captivate audiences in the competitive Orbita section. This section features movies from genres of suspense, action, and dark comedy, showcasing the most remarkable cinematic works of the year. The recipient of the coveted Best Film trophy will be determined through audience voting. Angel Sala, the festival's executive director, commented on the reason behind inviting Smugglers: "Smugglers is a fun and moving Korean action/adventure film with unique female protagonists. Ryu Seung Wan once again infuses his unique touch into Korean action cinema".
Smugglers is a gripping crime drama set in a tranquil coastal village on Jeju Island, where a group of female divers faces a threat to their livelihood from a chemical factory.

Looking for other sources of income, Chun Ja (Kim Hye Soo) decides to employ her skills in smuggling, collecting shipments cast into the sea.
She goes on to extend an offer to the leader of the female divers, Jin Suk (Yeom Jung Ah), to join her. Despite being aware of the dangers, Jin Suk dares to take the plunge. Amidst this backdrop, a life-changing opportunity to become rich comes to the fore. After premiering on July 26th, the film drew in a staggering 3.78 million domestic viewers so far.

Apart from Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, Smugglers has also received an invitation to Toronto International Film Festival's Special Presentation section.
