In historical c-dramas they had lighters???

I see them using these small bamboo tubes with lids on them, they pop the lid off and blow in it and it makes a small fire.

Is this a real historical chinese thing?  If so, does anyone know where I can find out more about the science and history behind them?

I think it's called "huo zhe zi" or "flame stick".
