- A title is anything you can watch that is in the MDL database.
- Each title must be watched from start to finish between January 1 and December 31, 2023, UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE.
- Each title can only be used for one route in the challenge (tip: use a custom list to keep track).
- It is okay to re-watch titles you saw in previous years as long as you watch the whole title during 2022-if you started a show on December 30, 2022, and watched 2 episodes in 2023, you can ONLY use that title if you RE-WATCH those two episodes from 2022 (again, UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE).
Example: By December 31, 2023, you may have seen Imawa no Kuni no Alice in its entirety 10 times: 5 times in 2022 and 5 times in 2023. You may only use it once for any given year’s challenge (so if you used it in 2022, you can use it in 2023 but only for one route).
Treats
- Are found at the bottom of the challenge. It is up to you to come up with routes for these treats.
- May not cover anything mentioned in this challenge (but you may use previous years' prompts for inspiration).
- Every time you start a new stage, you will be awarded a new number of treats according to the table below.
- It is ok to save treats to use at the next stage of the challenge.
- How you distribute the treats at your disposal is completely up to you.
- The treats are a bonus feature, using treats is therefore optional.

- Habitats are groups of FIVE Routes (descriptions) for to finding Essentials (titles).
- Most Routes consist of TWO descriptions for you to choose from, you must choose one or the other in each route and find an essential (title) that matches the route.
- The whole Habitat (ONE essential per Choice of Route) must be completed to be counted unless stated otherwise.
- You need to complete at least 2 Habitats (10 essentials) to complete the challenge.
- The names of the Habitats and wording like essentials, routes, and treats are just there for fun.
- You may choose to complete any number of the 25 Habitats or number of stages in the challenge and may finish the essentials in any order you would like.
- You can move around essentials (titles) as much as you want on the worksheet while you are working on it.
- There is ONE exemption to the groups of FIVE routes and that is Habitat #25, Countries of MDL. Here you can choose to gather FIVE essentials (watch five titles) from FIVE different countries or gather essentials from all SEVEN countries found on MDL and get an extra badge to your challenge badge, the TIGER. You must also gather essentials from all 7 countries in every environment if you wish to get to the next stage (environment) of the challenge. You may not use treats in the international habitat if you wish to get the TIGER badge.

Titles that feature... or where a significant scene... can be a little bit tricky-it may be included among the tags or in the description, but being tagged or in a synopsis is, again, not required for this. While watching a title you are sure to notice if the title features what we are asking for or a significant scene shows what we've asked for. These, too, have voting lists where people can add recommendations for the routes that include the word “features" or "significant scene..." We have also added more specific text that explain what we are looking for in each voting list to help you out.
Awards: We have a list with awards here; you are free to use any award including a spelling award from 1st grade, just add a link.

Habitat – a numbered group of 5 Routes, most of which consist of two choices.
Route – a mission description that states the conditions there must be to be able to find the right essentials to include in the habitat.

Here we have gathered some information about the challenge, the animals, our process as well as the choice of words for this years challenge.
The MDL watch challenge started 2017 by Hessa, when she adapted MAL’s 2016 Anime Watching Challenge to fit MDL.
2020: The challenge was handed over to Old Anime Lady, kdoramalama, and Dramaworld.
2021: The team included: Old Anime Lady, Dramaworld and Poia who introduced the block system with about 200 titles, 40 blocks and 12 levels of participation.
2022: The team working on the challenge was Old Aaimee Lady, Dramaworld, Elbee (who had helped out from the early days, Shiro and Sam. This account was also created.
2023: Rien was invited to join the team and we added stages to the format
How did we come up with this years theme?
We asked people on feeds as well as the discussion thread for suggestions, and set a date for final submissions. Once the date had passed we discussed the pros and cons for each suggestion and the group then chose animals as the main theme.
The words used in the challenge:
Habitat: " A habitat is a place where an organism makes its home. A habitat meets all the environmental conditions an organism needs to survive. For an animal, that means everything it needs to find and gather food, select a mate, and successfully reproduce.... ..The main components of a habitat are shelter, water, food, and space" (Source)
Essential: This would mean a habitat consists of 5 main essential conditions: Food, Space, Water, Shelter, and a Mate. Some would also include weather conditions among these. Essentials seemed to fit the task best, but we did have other ideas along the way.
Route: A route is a way or course taken in getting from a starting point to a destination, by using this word we get the option of chasing how to get to the places where you can find the right conditions and hopefully see or create a habitat for the animals in the challenge.
Considerations while creating this years challenge
We make several considerations when choosing what to include in each challenge.
1. The basics: Part of the aim of this challenge is to let people get to know MDL better and explore the different function on MDL + the countries of MDL + favourites and awards. These are always present in one way or another.
2.We also try to keep it fresh with prompts that fit the theme
3. We check the suggestions people sent us over the year.
4. Explore peoples extras, are there any extras that are more frequent than others, we try to look over how we can fit in as many of the participants ideas as possible while keeping some kind of structure that makes sence?
5. We check if there are any prompts that have been less popular, were there any prompts that bothered people.
Why give people different choices when there are treats and several habitats to choose from:
Sometimes there are different paths to the same destination, we want this challenge to be open for all no matter what preferences, age, or baggage they have with them. By making sure all routes have options we even out the playfield while still making way for the routes some may want to avoid.
Adding stages: We wanted to make it easy to make it a bit shorter and easier to navigate, but also make sure it could last all year for those who watch a lot of titles. That is how the idea of a never ending circuit came up along side the stages .
The animals
The process:
You may think that we just pick a bunch of levels because they are cute, however we do actually put quite a bit of thought in to choosing the animals for the challenge, we want them to be ecstatically pleasing (cute) but we also wanted all animals unique to each of the countries of MDL and be interesting in one way or another.
| Finding information about this bird is actually a lot harder than one may think, f you try to google it you will end up finding a bunch of pictures or things related to BTS: "Even though the word crow tit has a fixed meaning, its usage, particularly within Korean culture, has changed and evolved over time. Originally, crow tit referred to a small, puffy bird; however, after being used in a Korean proverb, the term crow tit came to refer to someone who is trying too hard to fit in by becoming something they aren’t. Using this latter meaning, the Korean band BTS released a song where they called themselves baepsae, which is the Korean name for a crow tit. The song delves into some of South Korea’s social issues and explores how different generations view each other." (source) We chose this little bird because it is light, fluffy and for it's Korean cultural value . |
 | "Taiwan blue magpie is the sacred bird of Taiwan aborigine Tsou, Thao, and Bunun peoples. " "are scavengers and omnivores. Their diet includes snakes, rodents, small insects, carrion, eggs and chicks of other birds, plants, fruits, and seeds. They also feed on food waste of humans." They are also said to not be very shy. their biggest threats are cars and humans. (Source) This bird was was chosen for its cultural significance and beauty. |
 | "The Japanese dwarf flying squirrel (Pteromys momonga; Japanese: ニホンモモンガ, Hepburn: Nihon momonga) is one of two species of Old World flying squirrels in the genus Pteromys. During the day this squirrel hides in a hole, usually in a coniferous tree, emerging at night to feed." (source) We fell for their fluffiness and yet again cuteness. |

It is featured prominently in the culture of the indigenous people of Palawan. The bird is also depicted in the official seal of the city of Puerto Princesa." " Peacock-pheasants are highly invertivorous, taking isopods, earwigs, insect larvae, mollusks, centipedes and termites as well as small frogs, drupes, seeds and berries. They are strictly monogamous, renesting yearly. The female usually lays up to two eggs. Both parents rearing chicks for up to two years. Males act as sentinels of nest sites and are highly pugnacious during the reproductive cycle." We chose them because they are beautiful and Endemic to the Philippines. (source) |
| "Japanese martens live in boreal forests in much of Japan's mainland. In the winter, martens tend to go to the forests where they can get the most prey. They tend to choose well-established forests because of the ways the creatures have specialized and due to their long lifespan. As such, martens likely are valuable in assessing the health of the forest. However, in the summer, their habitat and diet become much more generalized, allowing them to live in a much more varied environment" We chose it because it is just so cute and ) is a marten species endemic to Japan. | "Macaques of Hong Kong are just everywhere, especially in the branches and trees of Kam Shan Country Park in Hong Kong. Also known as Monkey Hill, here, the long-tailed Macaques and the rhesus macaques are most prominent, swinging from this way to that." (source) We chose this one because we could not resist its charm and for being common in Hong Kong, our other strong option for Hong Kong was the Pink Dolphin (among others) but we could not find a good enough picture of one. |
| The red panda (Ailurus fulgens), also known as the lesser panda, is a small mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. It has dense reddish-brown fur with a black belly and legs, white-lined ears, a mostly white muzzle and a ringed tail. Its head-to-body length is 51–63.5 cm (20.1–25.0 in) with a 28–48.5 cm (11.0–19.1 in) tail, and it weighs between 3.2 and 15 kg (7.1 and 33.1 lb). It is well adapted to climbing due to its flexible joints and curved semi-retractile claws. We chose it because it is a panda, sweet and brings a lovely red to the paltete. (Source) |
| The sika deer (Cervus nippon), also known as the Northern spotted deer or the Japanese deer, is a species of deer native to much of East Asia and introduced to other parts of the world. (source) This deer was chosen for its size, beauty and for inhabiting many of the countries represented on MDL. |
| The Formosan black bear (臺灣黑熊, Ursus thibetanus formosanus), also known as the Taiwanese black bear or white-throated bear, is a subspecies of the Asiatic black bear. It was first described by Robert Swinhoe in 1864. Formosan black bears are endemic to Taiwan. In 2001, they were voted the most representative wildlife of Taiwan in a half-year-long countrywide voting campaign. They are also the largest land animals and the only native bears (Ursidae) in Taiwan.[2] (source) However there are several types of black bears in the region, this one was the easies to spot. And was chosen for its size, cuteness and for being photogenic. |
| "No list of the most unique animals in Thailand could possibly skip the Indian elephant. This hulking beast of nature is a veritable symbol of the country, and one of the most celebrated creatures in the whole region. They are native to all of South Asia, ranging from India through to Vietnam, with the biggest numbers of wild elephants in the Land of Smiles centered around the north. Sadly, it’s now listed as Endangered by the IUCN and numbers have plummeted due to habitat destruction and poaching in the last few decades. In the early 1990s, an estimated 3,000 elephants lived in the wild here, but that’s since been cut by up to two thirds, while the number of elephants in captivity is estimated to have doubled." They have at one point existed in the wild in all the countries represented on MD but have been extinct in The Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan. rumour has it the population of wild tigers is growing in Thailand and that there are a few tigers left in China.  | The Panda is pretty much our mascot, chosen for it´s popularity among us and other users on this sight. "The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca, sometimes panda bear or simply panda), is a bear species endemic to China.[4] It is characterised by its bold black-and-white coat and rotund body. The name "giant panda" is sometimes used to distinguish it from the red panda, a neighboring musteloid. Though it belongs to the order Carnivora, the giant panda is a folivore, with bamboo shoots and leaves making up more than 99% of its diet.[5] Giant pandas in the wild occasionally eat other grasses, wild tubers, or even meat in the form of birds, rodents, or carrion. In captivity, they may receive honey, eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges, or bananas along with specially prepared food.[6][7] The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in Sichuan, and also in neighbouring Shaanxi and Gansu.[8] As a result of farming, deforestation, and other development, the giant panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived, and it is a conservation-reliant vulnerable species.[9][10] A 2007 report showed 239 pandas living in captivity inside China and another 27 outside the country.[11] By December 2014, 49 giant pandas lived in captivity outside China, living in 18 zoos in 13 countries.[12] Wild population estimates vary; one estimate shows that there are about 1,590 individuals living in the wild,[11] while a 2006 study via DNA analysis estimated that this figure could be as high as 2,000 to 3,000.[13] Some reports also show that the number of giant pandas in the wild is on the rise.[14] By March 2015, the wild giant panda population had increased to 1,864 individuals.[15] In 2016, it was reclassified on the IUCN Red List from "endangered" to "vulnerable",[1] affirming decade-long efforts to save the panda. Help each other out and add titles that are educational. These are the types of titles where there is a clear teaching aim, such as learning how to play Go Stop or Mahjong, sex education, teaching about important historical cultural places or practices, LGBTQ rights, parenting guidance, religious teachings, climate change, insight into medical conditions, meditation, forest preservation or how to fly a kite, forage for mushrooms, play an instrument, or just improve a practical life skill… This is not the same as the school genre, but it is possible there may be dramas set in schools that aim to teach viewers, too. While you are at it, why not vote for the ones you like! Feel free to explain your choice in the comment section or send us a link of your own to a list with titles that fit the description to this Essential.
