"Lee Min Ho and Kim Soo Hyun applied for an extension and both have been granted a one-year reprieve"

Do you understand anything? Reprieve? But Lee Min Ho (born 1987) and Kim Soo Hyun (born 1988) haven't to enlist THIS year. Was it a canard?
I think they were called to go and were supposed to go, but because professionally it was bad for them, they asked for an extension and it was granted. Until those news I didn't hear anything about Kim Soo Hyun, I think, but everyone was commenting about Lee Min Ho. I guess that's what happened...
OMG! Physical injuries!

Mighty Mouth’s Sangchu and Kim Moo Yul to Complete Military Service Despite Injuries

Military service is a hard job! They have to take more care of their health.
But half a year in a hospital? Hmm.
of course i know absolutely nothing about the korean medical establishment but in several dramas i've seen people admitted to the hospital for weeks over simple broken bones, two examples that spring to mind are the female lead's lengthy hospitialization in unemployed romance and that girl with the broken leg who hangs out with gu jun pyo in BOF. even if that's an exaggertation it suggests that they take it a bit more seriously than we do in america.

I still think 29-30 is too late age for active service. They have to do it earlier.
BTW did you read these articles. They try to clarify the situation.

I wonder, is it possible to equate being in hospital to active service? I mean - can this criticism lead to serious trouble for Sangchu?

as an american it's so hard to decide where i fall on the nuances of the south korean military. part of me thinks it's absolutely attrocious that these guys are forced to serve against there will but another part of me feels like sang chu shouldnt get any special treatment.

Well, technically, here in America males over 18 are required to put in their info to the military, even though there has been no draft since the Vietnam War. (At least, they used to have to. Not sure if they are still required anymore.) I think it's just in case there ever is a need in the future to reinstate the draft. In South Korea, they still live with tbe threat of North Korea trying to attack again, so with that in mind, I don't see their mandatory military service as a bad thing.
Has Lee Joon Hyuk been discharged? It says March 2014, but I don't remember hearing any news about it?

Can't wait until Yoo Seung Ho is released. I heard that JYJ and Yunho are enlisting this year.

Yoo Seung Ho and X-5's Ghun have the same date for discharge - December 4th.
