So basically what the movie is about just in case someone is curious but can't find it in the future. It also helps me process what I've witnessed.
It starts out with Yaji and Kita waking up from a nightmare and making out. Very recently Yajis wife died so that's what the nightmare is about. Her body is found by others and Yaji & Kita decide to travel to Ise and meanwhile hope to cure Kita from his drug addiction.
They travel around by motorbike and train and eventually stumble upon a village filled with men. They assume they're all couples too but it turns out all the men have paired up to form comedy duos since comedy is required for certain services like crossing the border. Kita is full on hallucinating from drug withdrawal and gets flashbacks to his childhood where he was laughed at for wearing make up. He hallucinates that a laughing god has come to save him but gets scared by him in the end. Because of his reaction its discovered Kita is a junkie and only Yaji is allowed to cross the border.
Yaji wonders the border alone and meets an addicted comedian who lost his son while crossing the border. Meanwhile Kita at the other side of the border meets the son of the comedian. The addicted comedian and Kita both enter a supernatural space through hallucinating and here the comedian is fooled into taking drugs while Kita is able to stay clean. Through this Kita is able to pass the border and meets Yaji. The comedian dies and is found by his son.
Yaji and Kita reunite and meet up with a group of highschool girls who are obsessed with some dude. They finally meet the dude but the highschool girls fall for Yaji instead and he distracts them by throwing his underwear in the air which they chase. They die from falling off a cliff due to this. A detective team who is searching for Kita and Yaji finds the dead girls and continue the persuit.
Kita and Yaji arrive at a restaurant where they meet a girl who can't sing in tune. Kita falls in love with the tonedeaf girl and tries to cure her singing but she loves Yaji so he is rejected. Kita loses sight of reality. He gets a flashback of how he was assaulted as a child and goes to Yaji where he fuses his arm to his own arm. Then at a later time he stabs Yaji with excalibur sword. Yaji dies.
Kita suddenly is in a movie theatre and sees the film we're watching play out. He meets one of the cinema workers and the lady allows him to rewatch some scenes. It turns out Kita had killed Yaji earlier in the movie. Kita regrets killing Yaji and wants to go back, the lady advices him that anything he fantasizes about becomes reality so he can just create a fake Yaji. Kita fantasizes a fake Yaji with the help of his sandles and eventually finds a bar in the forest where he drinks to allow him to fantasize about Yaji longer.
Meanwhile real Yaji is dead and a soul. An old lady finds him and advices him how to get back to life so they get in a boat to travel. They visit an afterlife spa where they meet a bunch of the characters that had died in the story like the comedian and the highschool girls. Except they all have the same form in the afterlife of a guys body. Yaji accidentally triggers the souls by saying something about returning to life and gets chased.
Yaji and the old lady end up finding a giant crying soul guy. Creating an entire river with his tears. It turns out its his wifes soul in the afterlife and he has to talk about her death with her.
Meanwhile Kita is succumbing to a mushroom disease at the bar and loses conciousness. The bartender turns out to be a fake person too and fake Yaji doesn't know what to do now. The detective team arrives but suddenly the fake wife of Yaji materializes. She threatens to kill mushroom-diseased Kita.
Soul Yaji remembers how his wife died. She always used to do chores and got sick of not being loved, then Yaji confessed he actually liked a guy. She got in a fight with Yaji and ended up stabbing herself by accident. His wife forgives him and allows him passage to the world of the living, meanwhile fake Yaji and his fake wife dematerialize too due to the matter being settled. The detectives leave after having seen the fake wife ''alive''.
Yaji meets up with Kita again and Yaji gets high from the mushrooms growing on Kita. They ride away on motorbike together and thats the ending.
Basically its a movie vaguely portraying childhood trauma, drug addiction, seeking forgiveness and love. Where the border between reality and dream is often difficult to find.
