Hung Mei was a Hong Kong actress born in Beijing, of reportedly Manchurian ancestry. She started her career in Shanghai cinema. Hung Mei first married Yan Hua, a famous movie actor of the period. Having migrated to Hong Kong with her family, Hung Mei (which means "red rose" in Chinese) became a widow in the early fifties but remarried later on with a producer who became father to Derek Yee. She was the mother of David Chiang, Paul Chun, and Derek Yee.

Apart from his acting career, she also coached many actors in the Mandarin dialect.
