In the West, Chinese director Zhang Nuanxin is best remembered for her arthouse film Qing chun Ji/Sacrifice of Youth (1985). A native of Mongolia, Zhang studied at the Peking Film Academy from 1942 to 1962, and not long after graduating, returned to teach there. During the Cultural Revolution, she was sent into rural China. Zhang made her feature-film debut with Sha Ou/The Drive to Win (1981). Having learned French while exiled in the countryside, Zhang went to Paris in the late '80s to further her film studies. She occasionally returned to China to teach and direct such films as Beijing Ni Zao/Good Morning, Beijing (1991) and Yun Nan Quiu Shi/The Story of Yunnan (1994). (Source: AllMovie) Edit Biography
