Great chemistry and skinship but frustrating plot

I was extremely excited to start this show after watching the trailer and I just finished the last two episodes today. Let me start by saying that I was fully expecting a tragic ending. We all know how ill-fated lovers tend to turn out (I’m looking at you Tale of Love and Loyalty). So I almost didn’t watch it because i’m not a fan of sad endings.

This show had soooo many tropes that I hate but I just couldn’t stop watching it. Mostly because of the chemsitry between the leads. This show had a surprising amount of skinship, especially in episodes 25 and 26 and it was believable. The kisses were great. Acting wise, I thought the ML was really good for not having a lot of acting experience and this being his first lead role. The FL acting was great, she was very natural to me. Especially the more complicated emotional scenes. The 2FL, a.k.a. the villain is your typical scorned woman turned murderous villain. Her character wasn’t explored much since this is a mini drama and a lot of things get overlooked or left out of mini’s. So her reasons for doing all the horrible things she did is really immature and shallow. I thought the actress did a decent job playing such a despicable character.
Now, as far as the story goes, what frustrated me was the amount of misunderstandings. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the leads would get half an episode, maybe a whole one, of happiness and then another misunderstanding would pop up. And the biggest one that caused the most damage was completely unnecessary. If Ling Xiao had communicated with Wan’er about why he was doing what he was doing, a lot of misery would have been avoided but he chose the noble idiocy path and broke her heart beyond belief and that was the beginning of the end.
For the ending, since we got an open ending and Ling Xiao was still barely alive when Wan’er found him, I’m going to choose to believe that he lived and he found the cure to his poison and they lived happily ever after.
All in all, it was a good show but just be warned that you might be frustrated for a good portion of the show. I wouldn’t rewatch the whole show but I would watch the happy scenes between the leads again.
