If you want to enjoy a fast crime/action, with three great actors, this is the right movie to pick. When a serial killer accidentally chooses a gangstern as his next victim things went south. A cop eager to catch the serial killer is willing to team up with the gangstern and use any kind of method to close the case, the life of these three characters become entangled in a succession of gangstern fight and car chases, like in a cat and mouse game.
The investigative part is managed in a sublime way, ranging between normal and fast-foward scenes that show you the progress of the investigation without stealing time from the action. The pace of the show is very fast, there is no time for character development or for an in-depth analysis of why the serial killer is acting like this, but the combination gangstern/policeman creates amusing and dramatic situations, specially towards the end. Needless to say that the acting is excellent, while the soundtrack is not memorable but it does it’s job being fast and incessant. The ending is epic and poetic.

YOOOOO

So first I gotta say my man Ma Dong Seok played his part FLAWLESSLY! He may be a really miscellaneous role actor but he's never failed to deliver to me. If you're looking for something that'll make you wince in imaginary pain, you've come to the right place. As someone obsessed with serial killers, I'm aware of where the law stands on the death penalty and I'm rarely satisfied with court rulings on any murder case. This movie is a perfect example of how poorly the law handles stuff by doing everything "the right way". I'd definitely do good as a mobster lol There's so much blood and profanity I couldn't help but be entranced with it all! If you love action with a side of psycho, you'll love this movie as much as I did.
Enjoy...

A Hollywood level Korean must-see film

Ma Dong Seok will never disappoint. From the very beginning, the film engulfs you, especially Dong Seok, as a cruel gangster, attracts the viewer. The action scenes were brilliantly filmed. The director and the cinematographer evidently played around with different styles and angles while filming which had a positive effect on the overall quality. I liked the idea of collaboration between a gangster and semi-rogue detective to catch the killer. The idea was great and well done. I'd say it's one of the Korean action "classics" and wouldn't be scared to say it was of Hollywood quality. I definitely recommend this film, especially to action lovers.

"The Cop" is Super Annoying

This movie is entertaining thanks to the acting. "The Gangster" Ma Dong Soek is fantastic as usual and the actor playing "The Devil" Kim Sung Gyu is brilliant. I havent seen him in anything else but I will. There really are just evil people in the world. Kinda wished they would have given a little more background on the killer's motivations other than the standard abused as a child scenario. I thought they showed he might have been married but then didn't expound on that. "The Cop" was super annoyng and really got on my nerves from the moment he stepped on the screen.

This is overall an enjoyable film and the ending was perfection!

Ma Dong Seok is a big teddy bear with a badass attitude but a softie at heart - at least that was my image of him when I first saw him in the role of Park Woong Cheol in "Bad Guys". In "The Gangster, The Cop and The Devil" he reprises pretty much the same type of role: a gangster that is very tough on the outside, bordering on cruel in some cases (but hey, a gangster would not be a true gangster without a good portion of evilness inside), while also being considerate with his affiliates, with a good instinct on when to take the attacks on him seriously or not. He played his role flawlessly, with just the right amount of ferociousness towards his enemies and good will towards his allies; simply put: seeing his character in action was a true delight.

"The Gangster, The Cop and The Devil" is otherwise a great crime / action movie about a gangster who is attacked by a serial killer, who then teams up with a cop in order to catch the murderer. It's not a black / white situation of bad guys collaborating with the good guys, since everyone in this movie is pictured as a certain shade of grey. The filmmaking was in that regard outstanding, often waving the lines between the gangster group and the police squad, having each of these two parties mirroring the other's way of doing things, mixing them together or even reversing the roles. For me, it was extremely entertaining to watch.

The story doesn't drag at all, it's suspenseful until the very end and the investigation bits are done in a very concise and dynamic manner, leading to a fruitful collaboration between the gangsters and the police, and to a very satisfying resolution of the plot.

It was boring. To be honest, I wasn't even keen on watching this. The synopsis alone screams its going to be a usual gang-type movie. I just watched to give it a try. I liked the last movie I watched with Ma Dong Seok (The Outlaws). But this one couldn't be saved by him. I almost fell asleep watching it. The plot was predictable. and the actor playing COP was really dull and lousy, trying hard to act cool, rude and whatnot but doesn't have an ounce of charisma as a police officer. Had they casted a better actor, this movie could make a pass for me. Don't waste your time, it is not worth it 6.5/10

Pass

Pass, that is how you would probably feel after watching this movie. My expectations were high because of the ratings, and the reviews. But something was wrong. Maybe the pace, or the absence of connecting the characters when you expected more, or both.
Acting has taken the lead part in this, hats off. Otherwise, it was not the best story, it was not great action, and again, it was not special suspense. You won't feel connected to the characters or the story if you trust my review. If you want to make up your mind on your own, watch it if you have nothing else to watch.

Entertaining

LIKED

- It is based on a true story but the events were dramatized nicely
- The lead actors performances are decent
- The screenplay is fast-paced, and gripping until the end. The mixture of betrayals and partnership was thrilling.
- The action sequences have been shot and executed quite well.
- The film's end is quite an unexpected turn.

DISLIKED
- most of the action sequence happens during the night, which gives crime a dark thriller, but the fight in dark is not my type.
.
REWATCH: Low, cause am not a fan of action crime

The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil is an entertaining and decently made crime action film that is worth and learn to be safe and alert at all times.

Gave a real kick in the head !!!

A good & a pulpy crime thriller from Korea of well-worn plot tropes and slick production values.
Supposedly, this was inspired by real events from a decade ago, but, while the 2005 setting is mentioned, it’s barely relevant.

The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is sure fire hit for fans of this genre. The film doesn't dig too deep, but works because it doesn't get lost in the some of the deeper trappings of the genre.
Yes, it's car crashes and fight sequences and dry jokes, but it's a mix that will make you wow, wince and guffaw in just the right amounts, all carried off with a gritty style.

VERDICT _ A solid, if not quite exceptional, time-passer.

Watch this for the acting and - some of - the story and direction

Enjoyable serial killer chase, with a novel (to me) factor of alliance between (semi-rogue) police officer and gangster.
Plenty of violence, but none of it overly graphic
Well enough written though there is no writer named here, well directed
I enjoyed this : its strongest point are the acting and character work
I find car chases, and chases through random areas rather boring, and of course quite few screen minutes were devoted to these, which I disliked. I also found some of the fight scenes pointless and time-wasting. FF was well used for those.
Some of the plot devices - even though I may not have seen them before in quite this form - felt hackneyed and fake. The internal conflict between police officers suggests (if realistic) that the Korean police system is both flawed and undisciplined. That these were breaking out into fist fights ... well, that felt very artificial and simply like a device to make the film longer without adding any value.
Much more could have been made of forensic investigation, with proper work conducted on the various lairs. and crime scenes. The techniques and lab work didn't need to be shown on screen, but the absence of any such investigation made this drama even shallower
There is no explanation on how the police and prosecution service dealt with the rules of evidence to initially justify retaining the killer, and secondly secure a conviction. Even though the conviction was based almost entirely on the witness statement in court, there were valid arguments to challenge the ID, and that he actually stabbed the witness. No such defence was offered.
So, while enjoyable, the plotting was too shallow for my liking, and leaves the drama less satisfying than it could have been if, say, most of the chase scenes were replaced by evidence, reason and argument.

My favourite korean movie ever

I watched it because of Kim Sungkyu, because he is my favourite actor. So i was a little nervous about the movie, because i don't watch a lot serial killer "theme" movies. But it worth it! It was amazing! I loved how Ma Dongseok acted the badass gangster, it was really his role! Kim Muyeol was amazing too! But Kim Sungkyu, woooah dudeee, such a talented young man, (I mean he is 35 soooo nvm) i think the reason why they casted Sungkyu for Kyung Ho's role was that they wanted a hot villain you know lmao :') Anyways i rewatched it for six times and i enjoyed it always. If you like serial killers, gangsters, action or crime i can recommend it!
