It seems so strange to me that the Asian public is shocked/surprised/unforgiving about certain things that should be a given...given that we are all human beings; with feelings. We have good days and bad days. We make mistakes and not everyone is going to like each other. But the media feeds all this stuff to the public and netizens seem to go crazy of the slightest infraction by a band member or actor/actress.
I feel as if Asian people have such an elementary or outdated view of their idols. They expect too much. They think just because they act or sing or look pretty that they don't have the same rights or feelings as the regular public do. They seem to forget they are just people too! What is up with that? I will site examples.
1) Saesang Fans. Their ability to exist without sincere punishment and little things attached to this like... After being tortured psycologically by these fans Kim Jaejoong loses his cool and yet...he is the one who is looked down upon in the media. The focus is on his reaction rather than what horrible things have been done to him for months/years on end and he feels the need to apologize to the public? WHAT THE WHAT?
2) The whole apologetic tone of any Asian star who makes the slightest mistake. How the public reacts and basically attacks...often circling around the star like sharks in chum infested water. They say the most horrible things. Very unforgiving.
3) The Tone of This Article: The tone suggests that people would be shocked that not everyone in a large idol group would get along with everyone else. It seems to me they should realize by now that not everyone is always going to get along with everyone. What person lives in close quarters with another and ALWAYS gets along? In large groups of people aren't there always personality clashes? Why does the media foster this note of surprise to the public...like they should find this surprising news? Weird.
4) The Story of Korean Rapper Tablo: ....just, wow!
Who else has read media stories out of Asia that seem so damaging or even just silly or strange? Stories that illustrate the weird relationship or expectation between the STAR and the MEDIA and the FAN? ~ Discuss if you want.

i agree. i watched a documentary a while back, not about asia specifically but there was a 30 minute segment w/in the documentary about Sumo wrestling culture. there is a japanese term (cant remember the actual term) but it roughly translate as "what it IS and what it APPEARS to be." and basically it just refers to the fact that japanese officials will ignore things if it upsets what a thing "should" appear to be. the documentary specifically mentioned murders within Sumo schools that went uninvestigated b/c it would go against the appearance of honor Sumo is supposed to have. there was also mention of police not offically reporting or investigation some rape cases that they felt could not be solved b/c it would contradict the appearance the police are supposed to have.
what i also find REALLY odd specifically about korean culture is this idea that you have to be perfect ALL THE TIME. if you're not you are despised, but at the same time you're getting bashed for your behavior (like smokin' the wackey tabakey back stage..ahem g-dragon) and treated as if you killed some one, it is also possible for your parents/ hyung/noona/oppa/Unnie or sunbae to get bashed for not "teaching you properly" how many times have we heard that line in dramas? "you're his Hyung! what are you teaching him!" while getting beaten with a broom stick.
with the stars there is a strange dynamic, as if these idols BELONG to thier fans, not just thier public personna but their personal space as well. i heard TOP on one show asking fans to leave his ex alone. some how her picture had gotten on the internet and fans were not being nice. he said the things that were being said were "offensive" apparently he had been wanting to say that for a while and finally got up the courage. an american star would have grabbed the 1st TMZ reporter they saw and yelled "BACK OFF MF'ERS!"
heres an article i read that really skeeved me out.http://www.allkpop.com/2012/07/sasaeng-fans-install-cctv-in-the-parking-lot-of-park-yoochuns-home
for americans the concepts of individuality, personal happiness and personal space are so sacred they're LAW. for a culture that doesnt have that, i guess this is what happens.

Wow. So true. and I don't think it should be an "american" concept. I truly believe this should be a human concept. Personal Space and the pursuit of personal happiness should be LAW everywhere.
I often read some of these articles and the whole time I think... "How dare you?!" or from the star's point of view.. "Why in the hell are you apologizing right now?"
I joke around on MDL so much about (two in particular) Asian stars that I like; calling them My Ahjussi and/or My Baby. but Do I really for one second believe that? Would I ever for one second act in a strange way if I were to live in their hemisphere? NO.
I have seen posts on forums where a certain Idol has started dating or announced their engagement and the little fangirls go ballistic! They cry, feel inconsolable, bash the woman in question and feel anger or upset that their idol is now off the market.
and the whole time I am thinking .... Ummmmm...They have a right to their life! It's none of your business. Did you really think you had a sliver of chance? Really? They are aloud to date, break up, marry and divorce just like everyone else. That whole dynamic is so freaking strange to me. Do I adore SJS and Matsuda Shota? Hell yes I do. Do I also think they are human and put their pants on one leg at a time like everyone else? Hell yes I do.

I fully agree with you here. No one, idols included, should be treated this way. It's inhumane to do what these kids did to Yoochun with the CCTV thing.
I saw the whole new-wife-is-horrible-blahblahblah when Oguri Shun married Yamada Yu earlier this year. Even though I joked to a friend with a phrase like "aww...another one gone", I also know that I had no chance in the first place. Girls were calling Yamada so many horrible things, and I was shocked. I've always liked her as an actress, and I'm sure that before she married Shun, many of those girls thought so too.

Gah! See!? That is so weird to me. To me, If you are truly a fan of this man and his body of work and you admire his acting/his looks/his personality, then you should be happy the man has found love and happiness. How are you a fan if you are bashing his wife? His Wife?! The woman who he loves and who loves him? What the hell is that? Wish him well and be done with it! Sheesh.
Wow, I knew all about saesang fans and all but still...
People can be really crazy when it comes to their idol, I mean CCTV, seriously
If you want another example, I know that the actress Shin Se Kyung had to close her mini home page because she was insulted by a LOT of Jong Hyun fans when she was dating him
And about Tablo... that is just wrong, what's the point in doing this... don't they have other things to do
You should read this, it's about JYJ' saesang fans.

yeah...I read that a few months back when the story exploded and we were posting our outrage about this in the JYJ thread here on MDL!
I am glad you linked it here to. It fits with the topic. And after you read that and see the pictures it's like the CCTV is just another crazy, privacy invading piece of shite on top of all the other crap those Saesang fans subject them to.
I said it in the JYJ thread and I will say it here. How does the word Fan even fit them? How can they torment these people and consider themselves fans? It boils down to this: Those "saesang people" are making it their life's work...24/7 to make the lives of these people complete misery. That is it...That is their whole life. Making these people miserable. And they know this is what they are doing. Without conscience or remorse, sanity or humanity.
How they can even sleep at night is beyond me. How they are not in jail and/or punished severely is also beyond me. Crazy.
I think the media and fans, especially those effing and nonsensical netizens they blow issues way out of proportion. The fans also forget that this idols, celebs and what have you are still human beings, that fact that they are idols doesn't mean they've become gods and incapable of making mistakes....... Sure, they always show us their fans their brightest, coolest, funniest and whatever sides; they are always trying to portray a good image.
The media doesn't help matters also, they go around publishing every single report, every story an anonymous person tells; they don't even bother to clarify or check if the story or whatever jargons they've released to the outside world is correct or not.....
I think the artist themselves needs to express themselves more, there's no need to cover or butter up a situation - Okay, I know they don't have such rights, since they need to confirm with there CEOs and managers before they say a single thing; but still, I think they can still utter what and how they really feel to an extent........

I remember when I read the article I was like WTF o.O
I was sincerely shocked. I was like seriously?! there are actual people who are doing this?
And I also read things about SuJu saesangs, man those one... wow, just wow
The thing is that the majority of saesangs are under 18 and cannot be punished by the law, if I read it correctly...

I really think they are just utterly jobless and they basically have no LIFE, because if they do, they did worry less about someone's else life and face theirs.... When any of those idols or actors are in a relationship, I feel happy for them, because they really do need it. Firstly, they don't really have much friends, due to their schedules and all..... I think they now have someone that they can call, someone that can encourage them and someone who truly understands what they are going through as an idol....
All those sesang fans need to be locked up in a psychiatric home, seriously, do they think they are doing those idols any good?? What they are doing is classified as madness in my own dictionary....
I had to go smoke a cig after reading a couple article's about Tablo just now.. I had wondered what had happened, but didn't want to look it up, just in case I would get ticked.. and I did.. I found out about him because of that YG special on Strong Heart, found a couple of his music video's and liked them.. but to see where those songs came from, is a testament to his strength, and his art. I don't know how he did it, but am glad he did..
I am confounded by the length fans and anti-fans go to with just about anyone be they idol or not in Japan and Korea. To me it makes me wonder if any of these people are sane. Take for instance, a couple years back(I can't believe it's been that long) Jin leaves KAT-TUN, and I swear you would have thought the world ended for a lot of fans. I read so many, words just can't describe the level, of crazy & hateful comments. And all because he chose to follow his dreams, musically, without the limitations of an idol group, wth is so wrong with that. And then he goes and gets married, and his wife is pregnant, wow, the hate people threw/throw at him for that one.
This whole idea that idols belong to the fans in every way shape and form makes no sense to me, and the media spurs it on, like watching this show Immortal Song 2, when the MC is asking certain questions, the singers actually have to think before they say something, and you can tell what they are saying isn't how they really feel, but they are scared of the Netizens. I would want to kill myself if I were some of these Idols/stars/entertainers. But, the Idols, don't help any when they portray this "always available for anything" type of image. They need to just be themselves, a lot of the musicians I have admired, have been the type to do their own thing, and yeah sometimes they get famous, and sometimes they stayed under the radar, but one thing is the same, they did what they loved, and what they wanted so they had no regrets..
Let's not even get started on the "trainee days" with the entertainment agencies in Japan and Korea..

That law needs to change...and fast!
This really is scary..
Always when I think about those fans that are upset over their idol getting a partner, I consider it really egoistic. I mean you all fans have the right to find somebody next to you, fall in love and be happy... why doesn't he?! Idols have already stressful lives, of course they had their dreams come true, but what's the price? Korean idols don't have time to live normally, they don't even have time to sleep enough! If, during their hectic shedule they somehow find somebody they like, it should be considered a miracle and fans should rejoice, not bash them.
Devoting ones life to stalk a person is one thing, but to devote yourself to hate them? That's another level of craziness.
Recently I found a post at Ask a Korean ( great blog BTW), where he tries to explain the anti-fan phenomenon:
