I struggled with them coming across as older/too mature for the role in ep1. Ep2 was better because I can now see them as characters. I purposely say 'as characters' rather than 'as THE characters'. I don't know if I see them as the characters yet.
I'm ok with this adaptation being different from the original in terms of the comedy, upbeat-ness and other elements as long as they have a good grasp of the direction they are taking it in and will execute it well.
In terms of adaptations, the remake of Addicted/Heroin started off not great imo because they were trying to copy the original and they were failing at it but once they found their own voice and their own story they wanted to tell, it got infinitely better. Like night and day. It's one of my favourite BLs now. The Cherry Magic remake for me started off amazingly. Probably the best first episode of any Thai bl I've seen thus far. Up until around ep.8/9, it had the ideal elements of the Japanese original and the Thai flair but after ep.9 it became the generic Thai bl.
It may be the case that the story of My Love Mix Up only works with the energetic and charming style of a Japanese production. After ep.1 I didn't think I'd be watching this series for long but ep.2 has shown me potential. As you say,... we'll have to wait and see.

I am in the minority (it seems) that preferred episode 2 over episode 1. Everything being mentioned in the comments about ep2, I found to be the issue with ep1. I actually found this episode much more 'in character' with the story and the characterisations of the essence of the original. It even somewhat reminded me of A Crazy Little Thing Called Love. I think this is because it finally feels like a story about first love and I can now feel the essence of youth.
Last episode, I felt like although I know Fourth and Gemini are good actors, they did not seem like the characters to me. In one instance, they felt much too mature for the roles they were playing. In the other instance, they just appeared like themselves acting in a bl drama. However, this episode they felt more like characters.
I don't think the pacing was good or bad. I found it neutral (aka not much to comment on). I actually felt like this episode signalled to me that the creators have a handle on the story they want to tell and how they want to tell it. The creative choices seemed deliberate and well thought out (unlike a lot of Thai bls). I especially liked the inclusion of the musical numbers in the play, which didn't feel out of place at all. In fact, whoever wrote the entire script and direction for the school play scenes have shown that they understand storytelling. The songs were not just there as a throw away to flex Fourth and Gemini's singing chops or as an afterthought but I was pleasantly surprised to see that the lyrics to the two mini solo songs were very intune with the events of the play and serve as a way to cover a lot of the story to move the play along. Just like in actual professional musicals. During their two solos I was thinking to myself, "following this with a duet would wrap this up so perfectly." To my surprise they did just that.
Someone on this Thai adaptation team really knows what they are doing. They really understood the assignment this episode. I wouldn't even be surprised if the writer responsible for the play scenes is different from the main writer. These scenes felt a bit more elevated in quality to the scenes in the overall drama.
The only point I'd say I agree with the consensus here, is that the revelation that Atom likes Kongthap now, seems a bit rushed. We could have done with seeing him fighting these feelings and stewing on them for a bit before accepting it first.
The unpredictability of a Thai bl series is that you never know if it's going to stay good, get good or become bad, so I'm always prepared for this in the back of my mind. I know that just because I liked this episode doesn't guarantee that I'll like the next one. And it's not like I think that this episode was fantastic. I just thought it was good and better than ep1. Right now it's at about the same level as an average Japanese bl (which I guess is above average for a Thai bl) but certainly not anything to write home about. Anyway, we'll see how future episodes go.
Speaking from a purely analytical perspective, TVN must be really happy right now as each of the three dramas have made history and have given them some really insightful data in terms of multi-audience popularity (Queen Of Tears), international appeal (Marry My Husband) and competing as a streaming service (Lovely Runner).
I must say, I do like these Q & A style articles. I hope MDL will be able to provide more of these in the future from different reputable sources. I'm especially keen to see director or screenwriter Q & As. I always want to know more about their vision and their interpretations of particular scenes and creative choices.
It took me the longest time to finally watch Train to Busan. My only regret was not watching it sooner. I can't wait to see this new project. Hope it's just as good.

I'm coming back to this for the second time after watching it years ago. I opened an MDL account not too long ago to keep track of my Asian dramas and movies. Every once in a while I come across a blast from the past and I HAVE to watch again. I absolutely loved their younger days which had a coming of age feel to it. It made the future hardships feel like a loss of innocence but the story is so beautiful and emotively powerful that it doesn't linger in sadness. It also has one of the best explorations of morality I've seen,, showing how toxic rigid values can become and how victims can become perpetrators as well as how the 'heroes' turn around and exact the same horrors they supposedly fought against, as soon as they are the ones in power.
Coming back to this drama again because I saw that they had an edited version of the main leads' storyline. After watching that one, I had to go back and watch the original full length version and it reminded me of why I fell in love with it in the first place. Even as a BL fan, I wasn't aware it was supposed to be a BL when I first watched it and although I noticed the romantic undertones of their friendship/relationship, unlike other censored Chinese BL dramas, this didn't even frustrate me because I was watching because I was so captivated by the story, the filial bonds, the music, the scenery and the emotional performances. It was just so beautiful. The 'love story' became almost incidental for me. This is easily one of the best Chinese (I'd even say Asian) dramas I have ever seen let alone BL drama. I'm not exaggerating when I say dramas like this one come once in a lifetime.
Beautiful summary. I picked this series up again in the form of the condensed 20 episode version and it reminded me of just how spectacular this drama is. You hit the nail on the head about how it masterfully conveys the human condition at its core (love, family, choices). I feel like the best pieces of cinema are the ones that tell us/remind us about ourselves as humans and awaken depths of emotions in us that penetrates through the surface.
Like yourself, The Untamed touched me on a deeper level than I was prepared for and surprised me by how quickly I flew through the 50 episodes like they were the nectar of life. I had no idea about the story beforehand or who these actors were before going in. It was completely a blind watch for me and a decision I can say without exaggeration, that changed yet again, the way I view dramas. No other Asian drama has touched me so deeply. Though others have come close. I haven’t felt that depth of emotion since I was 10 years old and watched the first movie that made me realise the power of storytelling.

The way I understand it, is to think of it like three objects in a gravitational pull or a whirlpool at sea. Anything within that pull, its movements are hard to predict and manoeuvre as it isn’t following any patterns. All the variables are random, every time. Anything outside of that pull, you are more able to interact with and predict. If Earth found itself within that ‘gravitational pull’, it would become a four body problem as its movements would now become unpredictable/unstable. Someone likened calculating the movements of the suns to cracking a 1000 digit passcode that changes every micro second. As in, it’s an impossible task as the time it takes to enter the code (provided you crack it) is longer than the time it takes for each code to change.

The OST is top tier. I’m still listening to it today. I’m currently in love with the smooth disco 80s vibe of ‘Mint’. The hook/chorus is really addictive. 😁
