Btw, the older I am, the more difficult it is for me to watch Wuxia, even if I love watching Martial Arts. The heroes either constantly fighting against each other and allowing villains to run circles around them or allowing villains to survive time after time, is getting really tiring...
Well, it's a seriously overrated show; it's only one of the gripes easily found.
It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember struggling heavily until around 15 episodes - ADHD camera work, over-the-top comedy, mixing too many genres, Marty Sue ML with facial expressions of an evil eunuch, etc.. At that time, only FL's revenge interested me, but it was the biggest thing, so I was pushing on.
However, later things settled a bit; I even stopped hoping that ML dies every 5 minutes. But at the same time, the FL got progressively more useless (as they typically do). And the final episodes were rather weak as well.
I think if you don't like it by Ep 29, which is nearly the end of the drama, then you won't like the rest of it…
You should continue it because of the final rebellion, which is very nicely done (top 3 of c-drama rebellions for me). They even made the female lead somehow useful there.
Synopsis feels very Minglan-like. I'm sure the writers/directors will find a way to ruin it with an overbearing ML (or army of them bothering the female lead in the name of romance), but so far at least there is a reason to keep fingers crossed,

Glad to help. My personal preference is Yanxi over Ruyi, and it's not even close. Time is passing, and since I sometimes rewatch Yanxi clips, I think this drama is ageing very well. The same goes for Empresses in the Palace. I don't care much for Ruyi - not only because of the supposedly less historical truth regarding who is who, but also because the female lead there is way too passive for my taste, plus the Emperor's presence and acting are just so average compared to the other two. And of course, the cat-loving Zhen Huan is just an inexcusable idea.
