I wondered how many episodes you watched. From your list it seems you only watched first. In my opinion 2nd season has a different vibe in it because Pingjing is young and immature, but after 5th episode it well balanced with more serious Pingzhang. I don't know much about acting, for me it is more about can I feel character or not. I love all of Xao Tingsheng family, because they are real family.

NIF was brilliant not only because it has Hu Ge and Wang Kai. It's a completely different story, so it is directors and scriptwriter what really matter.

From what I see, they follow the history with some interpretation of facts. Sometimes they use poetry by Cao Zhi and Cao Pi, that was written later than actual timeline in the episode.
It's good historical drama. Characters are not one dimensional for certain. But it's not about love, romance part is minimal. There is heavy political plot. It's about aspiration in a turbulent era.
