I hate to admit I watch this drama. I want the daily dramas to be entertaining and usually the initial storyline is really good. I always marathon the first 90+ episodes based on the comments I read and the reviews. However, I must admit the story is interesting, but the execution is lacking. I will probably write a review after I finish the last of the 120 episode series. I just wish these long drama writers would stop sending us on merry-go-rounds in their story progression. -- In for a penny, in for a pound.
I just read the review by Claire and agree 100%. This was at best your average drama. Overacting, fight scene, extremes beyond reality, and a couple that did not have much chemistry. The storyline of a corruption at the highest judicial level was not entertaining and those Hawaiian shirts cliches..
Watched but not impressed. There is nothing endearing about the teenager and all of her actions are atypical and worthy of sharp criticism and correction. The friends -- or "called friends" are portrayed in a positive light by the writer. I don't want to add any spoilers, but the story is strange at best. The description of the story is basically correct. If you watch be cautioned not something for younger children to see - especially impressionable teens.
Not the best, but not the worse either. Draggy story that could have had stronger themes other than family loyalty. I agree that the story was disappointing and unless you have lots of time to waste -- I agree with Sohan - save your time. This was purportedly the number one watched drama in China. I can only imagine how boring viewers felt with the increasing lack of substantive development of story.
I laughed so much during this drama. It is the reason time travel dramas should be restored for general production, The female lead in this drama carries the story with her awkwardness and boldness blending the old with the new. I finished the first season in a weekend. Can't wait to see whether they are able to complete the second season with the same comedic value.
I forgot to say -- ABS -- I don't mind -- but some of these actors need to work on them a little bit more before going shirtless. If not a six pack - leave shirt on.
Second lead syndrome (as if all women have two admirers at the same time).
Alcoholism as a given in almost every drama. Women too drunk to stand and riding on the backs of guys or puking all over the place annoys me. Men that drink because it is the "man" thing to do -- in excess always.
Daily dramas that repeat the same storyline like a merry go round for 120 plus episodes No originality
Police and lawyers are incompetent in majority of dramas
Secondary storylines that are incomplete and leave you wondering what happened.
Rushed ending after dragging out story for 95% of episode - then abrupt rushed conclusion-- no pacing of story.
Not enough extras to even fill seats in a restaurant or just walking by.
Just a few of my pet peeves when watching Kdramas.
Discovered this on Amazon Prime this weekend and really enjoyed. Reminded me of Towering Inferno and 9-11 combined. The movie was intense. Great Saturday night movie with popcorn. I would give it a 10.
While I am enjoying the show, i do spend a lot of time wanting to force feed lee joon gi. That boy is so skinny…
I feel the same way -- I call it the "sheet of paper look" that I noticed in many young Chinese men starring in dramas. More precisely the drama Untouchable Lovers. I want to feed all of them. I was shocked at his change in appearance, but he is so handsome I disregard because the drama is interesting -- with flaws. If he were a woman we would all be commenting that she was "sick."
I am sure there will be two schools of thought about this drama's ending -- I loved it - my husband hated the progression near the end and quit mid episode 18 - while I enjoyed it to the end. I recommend watching because it was a different approach and the acting was extremely credible - from the kids to the adults. Everyone probably would like to write their own ending to this story -- if you have seen LaLa land -- then watch this drama you will have the same vibes.
My husband and I both watched this and we both agree with your assessment. The story was all over the place and truthfully made no sense. Stuck it out watching faithfully to the end because we invested so much up front time. Even used my technique of downloading the cast and their roles to keep track through Wiki so I would not lose track when there were so many storylines going on. The actors were good -- and yes, you are correct in your review. Nothing really made any sense and I am a history buff as well who likes to do follow up research of historical characters.
I agree 100%. I felt tortured to finish it and the story was not well written. I started out laughing because the camera had me leaning to the right -- then leaning to the left and it seemed to be a "budget" production. That red outfit annoyed me throughout - not flattering.
Your review is good so I decided to wait a few weeks then marathon episodes. This drama is awesome -- couldn't stop watching and watched 14 episodes over three days. As you mentioned this drama is so realistic and it has mature love relationships. How many failed relationships do you have to go through before your parents stop micro-managing their children's lives? Can't wait for the next two episodes. This drama is very complicated and may not be understood by the young at heart who have never gone beyond the "first love stage. Aging and dating unsuccessfully over almost 15 to 20 years helps the viewer understand Jin Ah. Pure love is such a challenge and the writers must be given credit for highlighting pitfalls of being a single female in the workplace. The actors and actresses are doing an excellent job. Best drama this year for me (second My Mister).
I was a little reluctant writing this article because I was not sure if people would find it too negetive. But…
I feel your pain. That is my catharsis after a total commitment of time and energy being mindlessly toyed with by bad storylines that lure you in then trample over you with lackluster story development or acting. I write reviews and give bad ratings so I can just release the tension of frustration and my bad habit of not dropping early enough to save face.
Thank you for the article. I thought it was only me that was suffering from "groundhog day syndrome" with this drama. There is nothing new or interesting about the plot and the more I watched - which is 32 episodes so far I am asking myself -- is it something wrong with my choices after 5 years of endless repetitive storylines and plots? I have a hard time dropping any drama that I spend more than 10 hours watching so I may last until the end. I have to remember to WAIT for substantial comments and viewer ratings before diving in -- however, I was tricked by several high rated dramas as well - great beginning --- stretching boring middles and complete jump off the cliff finishes that had me pulling the last few stands of hair I am holding on to. Again thanks.
Really started as a strong and interesting drama, but failed to deliver in the end. The story line began to lose steam in the last two finishing episodes -- but overall it was worth finishing the drama and not a total waste of viewer time. The acting was strong and credible, but the script was weak.
I am actually embarassed to say I watch this daily drama. However, I realized it has everything you don't like in a drama going on and it feeds the inner need to complain and criticize. The drama drags and makes you angry, frustrated, and you literally hate half of the characters because of stupidity --- but it is this stupidity that keeps the daily morning drama "need to watch" energy flowing. After a cup of coffee and this drama - reality sets in and life isn't as bad as you thought it could be -- just fantasy drama land. On episode 100 and yes -- I can't wait to see the ending. Just hope the writer doesn't do the "repair and redemption theme on this drama". No violins are needed.
This was a 12 episode story that is stretching the viewers patience. The see saw romance and lack of real chemistry between the leads because of the nature of the story line is sad. This drama started out as a romance lovers dream and is dragging to the point of unbearable. I just wish writers were a little more creative and realize their shortcomings in substance in the story -- there is no shame in ending when an end is appropriate.
