Yuan Hao killed the divine envoy who had trained the cranes to follow him and self immolate. This is to spread fear among the people that Yuan Hao has angered the gods and has thus lost divine support, undermining his image of invincibility. In China the ruler is always believed to rule with heaven's mandate. When divine birds like the crane abandon him, it is an ominous sign. My guess is his downfall will simply follow history.

Well I guess most of them will survive until at least 26 or 27.

And one of his fundamental teachings is not to worship him or idols. Nothing Yuan Zhongxin said that offended you so much was untrue or blasphemous. But by all means continue to enjoy or be offended by Chinese dramas in ignorance via the narrow lens of your worldview and beliefs.

I am enjoying it but I think it helps to skim through S1 before starting if you watched it long ago. There is a recap in Ep1 which should be enough if you watched S1 fairly recently.

It sounds like you more than anyone else are more bothered by the attack on religion. I am watching this with my drama group, 3 of whom are mainland Chinese. None of us are in the least bothered by this drama - we find it hilarous.

Folk religion in China basically means ancestor worship which is widely practiced and not what was mocked in this drama. The drama's depiction ties in with the government's efforts during the Song dynasty to stamp out certain unhealthy folk religious practices. You can google it and you will see what I mean.

According to official govt stats (and even US govt estimates), ~75pct of the Chinese population have no religion or practice folk religion/ancestor worship.

If people are offended by the depiction of religion in this show, they wouldn't rate it 8.2 on Douban or rank it so high on Vlinkage. In fact, the only thing I find offensive is that you have some idea that our religious beliefs today are still so archaic and steeped in really dumb old superstitions that we would be offended they are mocked. We are part of the modern secular world today, not stuck backwards in time thousands of years ago.
