The opening of the Chinese version of the novel is different. That part takes place closer to the middle. But yes, I agree with you if they take that out then the story impact will be vastly diminished.

I think 3Body is a phenomenal story but I really feel bad for anyone trying to adapt it. From what I have seen so far, the Tencent version is not that friendly to non-book readers. That said, I doubt Netflix version can do better. I didn't like many chunks of House of Dragon - I found it super misogynist with gratuitous incest and violence and excessive gory childbirth scenes that can only be intended to discourage women from having babies. I hope it gets nominated for the trash can. That said, I although the The Boys is also shockingly violent, it has a brilliant dark humor to it that I feel HoD lacked. I also found The Sandman pretty good. I enjoyed the The White Lotus most out of my 2022 dramas but it is not SFF. In terms of c-dramas, I keep a list ranking them by year under my profile. My top 2 for 2022 were The Wind Blows from Longxi and Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty. I know Reset is highly praised but I don't enjoy time loop stories. Its well written and acted but the repetition always does me in and I dropped it about 10 episodes in. It does close off most of the important loops. There are also good book reader comments on the ending but you need to scroll back further on the thread.

Well the first book is all about setting the stage in terms of the scientific premise and how someone is so disillusioned with humanity that they set these terrible events in motion. The antagonist motive so far is skipped. In the Chinese novel it is explained about half way through but even setting that aside the order of events is quite changed and not in a coherent way.
The visualisation of some of the hard science concepts is very cool and well done but... so far unexplained or not yet well connected so if you didn't read the book... The characterisations which are already weak in the novel are even worse here. Wang Miao and Shi Qiang have zero chemistry. Zhang Luyi in particular seems to be delivering an oddly insipid performance so far. I can accept a change in the order of the storytelling but if they skip Ye Wenjie's entire motivation then this is a fail.
