God, yes! She was loveliness itself. I basically only watched it for her and the synopsis made me quite wary, but it was better than I expected.

Ooh, the only thing I've watched is Yurigokoro, which I liked. Have been meaning to watch Last Life in the Universe, but I'm waiting for the right mood. Thanks for sharing :)

As for weird but good movies, I loved "Love Exposure" and "Memories of Matsuko". "The Taste of Tea" and "Survive Style 5+" are also quite weird, although I didn't love them as much as the previous two.

And if you don't mind older movies, "Kaigenrei" is also pretty weird--mainly for the way it's shot. Sometimes you'd have a character just on the far left side of the screen, while the rest of the screen is just blank wall or something like that. And two of the director's previous work--"Eros + Massacre" and "Heroic Purgatory"--are also rather weird. I guess they're just too dense with ideas that just watching them made me feel so stupid and smart at the same time, if that makes any sense :p

I think here in my country he's mostly known as that guy from Takeshi Castle. When I did find out that he's also a director with a bunch of well-regarded movies under his belt, some of them are supposedly quite violent (haven't watched Hanabi and Sonatine, but I will!), I even told my mother about him, and her reaction was, "Really? Who would've thought?" which I guess says something about comedians and how people perceive them.

Oh, and on another note, I really liked his acting in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. That last scene really breaks your heart.

On another note, I'm surprised Karei Naru Ichizoku gets another adaptation. I shouldn't be, I guess, considering that Shiroi Kyoto (based on a novel by the same writer) was recently adapted again by WOWOW.

It still hasn't sunk in, tbh. Like with Miura Haruma, it only really hit me that he died when I finally watched his last drama. There are tons of Takeuchi's work that I haven't watched, and I kinda suspect that it's not until I watch one of them that I will really, truly understand that she's gone.

Thank you for writing this. I can see that you've put a lot of care and thought into the article.

I've never really used tags myself, and I only added tags for the most obvious stuff ("based on a novel", say) or the potentially triggering. I don't particularly like the weak/strong FL tags, tbh, because they're just too subjective. Like you alluded in your article, an inconsistently-written (badly-written?) female characters can have the trappings of being strong, and I imagine there are also well-rounded, well-written female characters who seem weak or perceived as weak.
