annoying characters

a frustrating show. ML FL and supporting casts are terrible. A bunch of unspoken situation that leads to misunderstanding. ML self righteousness tries to be supportive yet doesn't provide any support. I would not recommend anyone watching this. what a waste of time.

strong beginning, really disappointing latter half

the last few episodes just got more and more annoying? is probably the right way of putting it. feels like the writers had something good going and then they just went in some completely other direction. so much drama and so much people just saying 24/7 and I stopped caring. glad I've finished it now. quite a shame, not interested in watching the other seasons. really wish there were actually good jdramas about zombie apocalypses , as this was the main one and it turned out mediocre. basically nothing else out there to even try now really, except for a few movies I guess.

Great cast and acting, great chemistry, good story (one slight spoiler called out)

Overall
I urge you not to take the super low ratings to heart. This show has a lot of trauma, but also a lot of humor that really works. Watch it!

Give me those two leads and the same level of trauma as in Touch Your Heart and it’s a classic worthy of an 11 rating.

The Good
- The cast is great. especially leads.
- The leads are a beautiful couple and their chemistry is off the charts.
- The FL’s smile is dazzling.
- Comedic elements landed and were not over the top. Both leads (and the secondary characters) pulled the humor off very well.
- Tenderness between leads, during the happy times, was inspiring.
- There were some really nice Mercedes cars (LOL even though I am a BMW guy :-)
- We got some decent amount of happy times at the end, not just the last 15 minutes like in some series.
- The story was interesting, with the caveats below.

Sub-Optimal
- There are at least one too many time slips. It did get repetitive and frustrating, as others have noted.
- There was also too much trauma, which accompanied the too many time slips. I would have rated this a 10 if there was less trauma and at least one fewer time slips.
- Those two things almost pushed this down to a 7 or 8. But my love for the leads and the comedic elements saved it for me.
- The villain (I feel sorry for the actor, who did his job well) was somehow not compelling for me.
-v(Kind of a spoiler) They dIdn’t really show a marriage - well they kinda did, but not for reals. I’ll leave it at that.

A modern twisted fairytale with great humour.

For me this was, unexpectedly, a laugh out loud Rom Com. The absurdist humour was very good at poking fun of fairy tale romances. The setting is modern day Cinderella with the FL living with her step mom and step sisters with the twist that they are not bullying our cinders.
FL has realised, through a hint from her deceased father, that instead of trying to succeed in business she may as well nab herself a wealthy prince charming. this naive worldview is the basis for the drama. In reality it proves to be much harder to execute.
The ML is very quirky and also has a naive worldview "follow your Joy" is his catch phrase, however, as the plot unfolds we realise he has hidden emotional scars and is really hiding behind his wealthy lifestyle, including a fake fiance to keep husband hunters at bay.
Despite the light hearted frivolity and steamy kisses, real and imagined, the two leads do have good chemistry together.
I liked the twist where our FL decides to not wait to be rescued by prince charming but embraces her earlier memories of boldness and uses this to help heal the ML and win him over.

Story Review

This story is very good and interesting for everyone to watch. This story is full of interesting moments between two lovers. The storyline is very easy to understand and the acting is also very good both in terms of expression and tone of voice. In terms of the theme song is also very good and pleasant to listen to.

THE BEST!

I really didn't expect it to be that good! Such a moving beautiful drama every episode leaves me crying never felt bored while watching and the FL was UGH just perfection she did the role amazingly!
I am really sad that it ended I wanted it to never end I think it is one of the best jdramas out there.
And the directing was so unique and captured kawauchi sensei's feelings.
I really wanna watch it again.

Compelling writing set in an extremely unrealistic premise!

There's a decent amount complex topics addressed in the show, some of which are quite questionable to me even though I belong the gay community. There are certain good parts and quite a bit of bad parts in my opinion. But the overall premise felt extremely forced and unrealistic.

There's further the topic of incest, which necessarily isn't in technicality, but if someone has been living under the same roof sharing a rather fatherly than brotherly bond, the entire dynamics become a bit questionable. Though I'm not here to argue on this topic.

The acting by Chris is spectacular and quite gripping, but the rest of the cast felt like 2D characters in a comic strip, even Xiao Yuan, his character doesn't seem realistic at all. This show follows almost all typical tropes of BL dramas and even though there's enough emotional depth, fails to make it relatable and is rather unconvincing.

The pacing of the show is pretty slow at times and does get really boring at times where you feel like when is this going to end, especially the last episode was a complete filler.

Adorable! The kisses are lit!

The actors and the characters are such good fit. They all did such a good job on this one. The costumes are also so beautiful. This is tiny bite that I won't mind rewatching a few times. The lead couple were terrific and adorable. I wonder thought what he was doing down there for 100 years, would have liked seeing some flashback to the time he spent there.

I didn't take her being the demon realm's ruler seriously as there was barely any depth to that aspect of her character. It was supposed to be a light hearted drama and it did so damn well in the genre. The kissing scenes were done just right.

I read a review that this was Xianxia without Angst, and I thought okay I want to watch a adorable short & sweet romance like that. There was just a pinch of Angst that would have had me going for the Yin Mo Ting neck, but all is good since he did not end up consummating his relationship with Lin Qian Yu.

Nangong Xin Lan / Lin Qian Yu reminded me of Georgina sparks, the looks and the entire vibe she has going on for the drama.

wow.

never have I watched a bl that has made me use my brain this hard. maybe it's the source material but the writing and execution of parallels and hindsight (every time the connections between scenes clicked I was floored) was extremely well-done. love the rough style of filmmaking and also spectacular soundtrack choices.

this one's gonna stick with me for a long time, and I don't know if I like that.

Realistic, *Almost* to the point of being boring.

As a student who also graduated in 2020, this was very relatable, although the lockdown and fear was even more intense than shown, but maybe the situation in China was contained more efficiently compared to other countries. It's not particularly a drama i would recommend due to its heavy, realistic theme, but the drama of families with last-year students at the time of the covid outbreak really did get me invested and each story was quite moving and well acted. The least realistic thing must have been the parents admitting their faults and apologizing after messing up 😂. A shame that it doesn't have decent english subs out tho, i tried online video auto-translators and they made more sense compared to the iQiyi subs.
Almost rated this 8/10, but overall, it is a decent watch with especially great actors.

A movie that released 14 years ago, yet the sentiment lives on like the fresh blooming of a hawthorn flower. My nature has scarce attachments to true-story films, but I stumbled upon this film out of boredom. I wanted to feel something, something new. A few things bothered me at first: there was barely any background music, the lighting was dark, and the slow pacing inclined my impatience to check the timestamps every 10 minutes. These impressions all dispersed in an instant by the hands of the plot's historical and emotional insightfulness. Sun and Jing's love story gave us a glimpse at life during China's cultural revolution movement. I harbored little memory of it from my history course, but my eyes have truly been opened to just how scant their freedom was. Having an opinion could put you in jail or under probation. One wrong move, thinking of a future is the last thing people think of. Everyone sacrifices a bit of their humaneness just to see a tomorrow. But ironically, humans will still yearn ways to stay human. I was at the edge of seat watching Jing and Sun's love story unfold. My heart especially goes for two scenes. First, the scene where Sun cuts his arm so Jing could receive medical care on her foot. The show initially displayed wholesome interactions between the two, so imagine my surprise when I watched this guy start to bleed quite a lot just for a girl he had met recently. Secondly, the ending. Sun dies of leukemia. I cannot tell you how tearjerking this was. He stuck a photo they took together previously up on the ceiling before his last breaths. His body was pale and inhumane, yet he shed his last tear after hearing Jing's voice. It was an ending I never expected, but still realistic considering the medical knowledge they had back then. One last note: I really admired the touch of characterism they gave for Sun's mother. How before she ended her own life, she wanted die looking pretty. It meant his mother cared about her reputation, but I guess it was just too unbearable at some point. Overall, I think all walks of life should watch Under the Hawthorn Tree once in their life. It reminds us of our roots. Even if you may not share the culture, the message remains universal: to realise gratitude for the freedom we swim in everyday, which was unfortunately something Sun and Jing never had.
