If you want a BL, look elsewhere!

I am basically a very pessimistic person, always seeing the glass half empty and expecting the worst from people. This drama just comforts me in my world view. So bear with me while I gush about House of Stars!

The story follows the owner of a talent agency "House of Star" and the people (actors and managers) gravitating around her. Since some of the actors she manages come from out of town, she has them live in her house following her rules and having them filmed by security cameras. There are 8 actors she manages. The actors often rebel not understanding the reason behind the draconian rules she implements creating new problems until a mysterious death occurs in the house and the whole hell breaks loose.

The ratings for this drama are shockingly low and I probably would have given it a miss had it not been for a reviewer who described it as "a hot mess that makes sense". And I loved it. Binged it, paying attention to details since there are no useless scenes: everything means something.

The drama has been filed under BL. No! It is a murder mystery & a character driven drama taking place in the entertainment industry where some of the characters are gay. The poster for the drama also does not give the right impression: looking at it I'd assume I'd be watching a period bl. They really represented drama wrongly with this poster (which is beautiful but still wrong!).

First there is a couple of BL actors, shipped together by the public but not dating even though one has an unrequited crush on the other. That actor, Pitch idolizes the star actor of the agency, Gun and starts following him around, almost stalkery!
There is a handsome country bumpkin helped out by another rising actor in love with him. They are the cutest couple though I have a problem with the actor playing the country bumpkin: he looks odd and has weird mouth (sometimes I focus on unimportant details but they turn to be so distracting) and I kept wishing he would not smile, his whole face goes crooked when he does.
Then there is an established straight couple but the man is tempted by another actor, obviously gay. This threesome has an explosive relationship, the two vying for the third one's love. The actress and the gay actor know how it works and they keep playing dangerous games realizing they were very much alike by the end!

The owner of the agency, Miss Suzzie, looks and acts like a dragon, cold, merciless, strict and odious. We eventually find out why she is like that but she is definitely not a likable character throughout the drama.

The drama seems messy as there seem to be too many characters but if you pay attention everything is connected and everything has a reason. The depiction of the cutthroat entertainment world concentrated in the agency microcosme is rather superficial as the drama is mostly focused on interpersonal relationships between the actors and the secrets they are hiding. The plot is well written and there are no loose ends or holes. And even though it finishes on a cliffhanger, the main mystery is solved but the downfall of the revelations is not shown: everyone remains in a deep stupor.

The atmosphere is heavy and the feelings of oppression are well presented by sets and cinematography. The sets first! The house from the outside looks like a sunny villa in Italy but on the inside it is a different picture. It is a heavy victorian english gothic manor: dark walls, heavy dark furniture, dark curtains, oppressive and menacing. I would say that it serves as metaphor for actors: nice and sunny and perfect on the outside, dark and mysterious and flawed on the inside! The cinematography corresponded to the sets with dark colours prevailing, events mostly taking place at night or in shadows. When the daylight was there, the problems became evident and crisis management came into action: the daylight does not hide secrets!

The actors cast are a mixed lot: while the majority are really good, the one playing Pitch is by far the worst actor here (or anywhere for that matter. Sincerely he should think of another career!). The character he played was of a completely clueless Pitch but he played him in a monotone and with an eternally surprised expression immovable like a mask stuck on his face. He was really really bad. He performed so badly that the romance between Pitch and Gun was not convincing and they just left it in the background. (BTW, I wonder how he got the part?) In the beginning of the series he was one of the main characters but he somehow disappeared in the last few episodes. Fortunately! The character's mother got sick and he was gone. I guess the production realized they miscast. If they ever make a sequel, I hope they will recast the role.
The other actors were really good had great chemistry and were not afraid of skinship!

If you are looking for a serious, gripping show about human nature, do not look any further. It is an excellent drama but not a BL!!!!!

Cute fluffy, heartwarming drama.

If you finished a thriller/intense/ emotional drama, and want to watch something nice and cute, with not much load, lemme tell you, you've come to the right place. The best part is there is no scheming evil person.
The story is pretty much simple (cliché), about a bunch of highschoolers, who fall in love and have their happily ever after.
I feel this drama has certain similarities with few others, so 'Disclaimer for this review' I might go ahead comparing bits and pieces with other dramas. Acting and cast were fine ( It was a pleasure watching Ai Jia (form 'Falling into your smile' ) (? lol, I still call him that). Coming to music, that one song in english that plays in the later half (i guess), its amazing.

Plot : I found it kinda similar to the plot of the drama 'a love so beautiful' , but i think this one was way much better. We have a cute and cheerful FL, who fell for the ML first (love at first sight). But unlike the FL of ' A love so beautiful', she's not entirely dumb. She's strong, i.e., she can fight her own battles, she's not entirely hopeless when it comes to academics (she had her strengths) , but she does try to act cute in front of her love interest. The ML on the other hand isn't someone who's the pefect (but unrealistic) human. He has his own weaknesses , and difficulties in life. The way each of them help each other grow mutually & ultimately fell in love, was truely amazing. At no point it felt fancy, it was very gradual and smooth transition. And wathing them was a pleasure.

Anothe comparison, that I've come across is between 'When I fly towards you' and ' Hidden love'. Both these dramas have a special place in my heart, and I loved them both. In my opinion, both of them are unique in their own way. Hidden love talks mostly about love. I'd call Romance as its biggest theme, which was a bit more mature in terms of life struggles, stuff like that. But that's not the case with 'When I fly towars you', as it has a plethora of themes like : school life, friendships, romance, which makes it different, in a beautiful way. (I'll still give Hidden love some bonus point for none other than the gorgeous couple CZY &Lusi.)

The portrayal of friendships in this drama , was just spectacular. I'm sure many had been reminded of their school days. It was just too good . Being majorly a school drama, a huge chunck of it had lots of plot lines relating to high school and it covered a vivid variety of issues. The five friends hanging out , having fun, probably gave all of us nostalgia. The best part was that the plot incuded their life as grown ups, again covering quite a few slice of life topics, which made it more realistic. The proposal was so freaking cute .
Everything, pretty much . I'd call this the CUTEST drama I've ever watched.

WHAT THE JUNK?

The average for this was a 7.4 stars, but I was feeling nice and gave it a 7.5 stars out of 10 stars. This was so bad, it wasn't even funny. 6 episodes of pure disappointment. The cast was decent; the story was not the best; just the way they presented it and did it made everything just so much worse. I actually couldn't stand watching this. I had to force myself to finish this because there are only six episodes. I saw so many good ratings for this; in fact, I had to scroll like 3 pages to find the first bad rating, and it was a 4, rightfully so.

It's a mashup between Seinfield (I think it is spelled like that) and Dora the Explorer. Seinfield is a sitcom for reference, if you didn't know already. It's a pretty bad sitcom in my opinion; they have shit ass humor, they try to hard to be funny with the laughing in the back, and it is something you go to sleep with and not actually watch. This was that show. You will be better off just falling asleep than actually sitting down and watching this. I say Dora as well, because at the end of the six episodes, I didn't even know his name because I was so damn confused. Nott would look into the camera and make some reference to love, and then the episodes would just end. Like what? That was probably the best part because the lines were actually pretty good and stuck with me.

Acting was, I'd say, all over the place in a good way. I like seeing actors I am familiar with. It was a fun vibe, but the vibe of trying too hard to be funny was not a fun vibe. It just gets annoying, and it's like you are playing bingo with your grandma and trying not to fall asleep. That's how I felt watching this show.

The editing looked like it was done by a 6th grader for a group project that is due the next day. Which can be a good thing because Fish upon the Sky is like that, but they pulled it off. This did not. You can have trash editing on some parts, but you have to mix it in with some actual good editing. It can't all be bad because that just gets annoying after a while instead of being funny because it was random.

Step on Me by the Cardigans was their song. Like towards the end of the last episode, when Nott was having trouble saying what he wanted to say, like he had been doing for the whole show, it was just giving that song, and I had it in my head for the rest of that last episode.

Yeah, that's it. I posted a lot to my close friends, but every single story was just pure confusion, and I really didn't know what was even going on or why. I wouldn't recommend this because this was an actual dumpster fire. If you want to watch it, go for it; I am not going to stop you. Okay bye!

WASTE OF TIME

the story is so boring and stupid it's unbelievable. I'm proud of myself that I managed to finish watching this series.....
I recommend everyone to watch something other than this junk.
the story has so many mistakes and sometimes makes no sense at all. in the production you can see flaws.....
You could have fixed the errors in production if you had watched the series beforehand.
I don't understand how people can create such stupid characters. What was the writer thinking?
moreover, the acting of the main female characters is so bad!

So cute and I want a man like Ye Chan in my life

So cute and I want a man like Ye Chan in my life

I'll try my best to make this quick.

I loved this show a lot. It was quick and straight to the point.

Chan did a lot of cutesy stuff...that if it was any other character would be cringe. But for some reason whenever he did it. It was the most adorable thing I have ever seen.

When Yul got hurt and Chan was constantly taking care of him even though Yul was fully able to take care of himself. My heart melted.

What I especially liked about this. Yul wasn't ready to admit that he liked Chan yet so he shut him down when Chan confessed. But Chan being the king he is did not want to give up. And I don't ever really see that in dramas. So to see that finally happen. It makes my heart happy.

Who was that white man with the beard? He was doing too much. But he was kinda funny so it made up for his crazy personality. Im so glad Chan didn't listen to EVERYTHING he was saying. Because Bro was definitely on something.

YE CHAN RANT:
I need a man like him in my life right now.

Because he is:
- buff
- strong
- very dense
- tall
- cutesy
- down to earth
- so baby girl
- and doesn't give up easily

Is Ye Chan in real life too much to ask for?...I guess so.

I gave the music a 7.5/10 because why every time something dramatic was happening would that really intense crab rave music start playing? Like no sad piano. no violin. no crying. just crab rave.

In the end, I gave it a 9/10. It was cute and quick to watch.

Sorry for any grammar or spelling errors. English is my first language, I'm just bad at it.

Comfort Drama

I picked this on a whim just to try one episode or so (I don’t usually watch c-dramas, much less contemporary ones)
Three days later and I finished it all. I don’t remember the last time I actually wanted to binge a drama, with ‘Hidden Love’ I just couldn’t stop.
It’s such a comfort show. It’s so well done. It’s incredible how perfect the leads have portrayed their respective roles.
It’s also so calming and healing not having to constantly wait for the other shoe to drop.
I loved every bit and I don’t think I’ll watch it only once.

Great Story, Good Actors, Nice Ending

This drama's been in my watch list for quite sometime, but I never planned to watch at first because I hought this would be cheesy teen romance. I finallly started to watch after saw some reviews here.

So I must say eventhough most of the setting is in High School and College, but this drama is quite mature and nice to watch

I love how this couple face all their difficulties together and always supporting one another in their own particular ways

Julia XHZ is very good, she could play all the role as High Schooler, College Girl and mature woman smoothly

The drama with the most fascinating character

At first I feel skeptical about this drama, since I heard that the novel was just another idol fantasy romance. But towards the end, the story become emotionally engaging and the characters become interesting.

Story:
I'm not fond of this kind of story. I feel like the story is too bland, too basic for costume drama. The story that more suitable for audience who was beginner in fantasy idol drama. However, I like most of the characters, especially the mains. The reason why I like them is because they are not intoxicated with love. They still can think of others, their family, friends, despite they have deep attraction for each other. When the trope of mentor-disciple usually fall into passionate love pit, in this drama they really stand for their position as the mentor really guide and teach lessons, the disciple also diligently learning then make her an outstanding one. But, other than these points, I don't think the plot is unique and refreshing. The court politics is shallow, the other characters didn't have an impactful development, the back story of war between races also didn't have depth explanation. So it's hard for me to feel connected to this drama at the beginning.

Acting:
Xiao Zhan's acting always has a big impact for every drama he played. Including this one. At the peak of this drama, his acting was so emotional hence made me unstoppable sob. Although he supposed to be aloof character, but his eye-expression can tell what's in his mind and his feelings. Undoubtedly, he is the soul of this drama and he really can act.
Ren Min's acting also not bad. Her crying scenes was particularly contagious. Instead of her just ordinary face and appearance, she can act well and suitable for her character as cute, smart and kind person. Well, for actors, you really can change your fate with your acting, good actors depend on their act, not only their face.
Aside of the mains, the side characters such as Zhi Yuan and Chong Ming have an interesting part. Chong Ming is cute and hilarious, and Zhi Yuan as the love rival actually likeable and truly a strong candidate to compete Shi Ying's charm.

Production: I think this drama has one of the finest audio visual from all the costume dramas which aired this year. The CGI is top notch and the music soundtracks are all very suitable for the scenes. The costumes too are stunning, specially Shi Ying's ones.

Overall: I recommend to watch this drama until episodes 15 before you decide to drop it. The beginning's pace is pretty slow and not very engaging, and I admit Ren Min's appearance was a little bit bothering, compare to other female characters who were prettier that her. However, as her character grew, she became more likeable and intriguing. Then you'll know why this drama become one beloved fantasy romance costume drama of this year.

Love at first sight, reconcile 10 years later between two Individuals of Noble Profession.

It’s love at first sight for ML in their teenage years, both 19. FL reciprocate the love but wasn’t brave and strong enough to defy her family. She left him but her heart never love again. ML tried but FL’s family is powerful, influential and did some unscrupulous act to harm ML, leaving him broken. But he also never gave up on his love for her and he choose to never love again. Till they reconciled by accident 10 years later, she is a medical doctor and he is a firefighter. Fate and time and time they were brought together and their love for each other continues to grow. FL wants to pursue ML but she still struggles with lack of bravery and courage to break her family ties thinking she is indebted to them. She is an adoptive child and was grateful of her adoptive parents providing for her, hence she struggles with intense guilt, till she discovered what her adoptive mom has done to harm ML and their love for her is conditioned and not genuine. ML is also an adopted child by his uncle’s family. His own father was an alcoholic who died in accident and his mom abandoned him, however his adoptive family provides secure and healthy love allowing ML to grow up with a lot more courage and resilience, hence he understands FL struggles and wanted to be her strengths. The catalyst of their relationship happened from ep 25 onwards, due to a major earthquake, both learnt they can’t live without each other and reconciled finally. After that, the rest of the series, there will be a few more incidents involving change in FL’s adoptive brother and parents. I love that at least this drama didn’t make an ultimate villain out of FL’s adoptive family. It gave the audience a chance to learn how they can also change and reconciliation is possible. Both leads’ love strengthen over time and their passion in their profession continue to flourish.
Although the romance is the core, it’s not the only emphasis here, be prepared for the slow burn, but worth the wait as their romance from ep., 25 onwards is steaming hot!

Verdict:
A well written story of growth, finding your own voice and believing in love. Of all the other drama with firefighter as profession, I would say this is the best! With brotherly love, family values and love, relationship and character growth, as well as believable rescue mission. Of course strong message on the pride represented in the profession too.

Some thoughts:
Faithful love is hard to come by. It does feel that the story stemmed from showing the FL’s perspectives as victim and flaws in her character resulting in her needing ML more. ML is just purely one track mind and obsessed with her. That’s the only part I find unrealistic, ML’s obsession for FL, he can easily find another woman, but he didn’t as script requires. He just have eyes for her, and it does feel that his existence is a blessing for FL as he truly rescue her from her dysfunctional family and help her grow. As a viewer I can see that FL has strengths but was uncovered because of ML. As mentioned in the drama, at an earlier ep. 11, FL feels and said she doesn’t deserve him, and she will harm him as she is not brave enough, which is very insightful and true in some perspectives.
However as the story progresses, it shows her growth in character and strength, learning to attune to her own needs and learning to love, as well as learning to be an independent adult through various events and experiences of her profession. ML to me, written here was flawless, I may be bias as because he is Yang Yang. Lol! Although ML was slightly rebellious in young age, he grew to take responsibility for self, family and the profession he hold prideful of.
Both Yang Yang and Wang Chu Ran are a beautiful pair. Chemistry is great.

The drama does have a lot more emphasis on the firefighter profession and medical doctor. Seeing so many of these theme in drama recently, I can’t help to wonder China really needs people to be inspired to take up this profession. the rescue mission were quite well filmed and realistic. The cameo of many familiar faces from cast of Glory of Special Forces were fantastic, can see their good teamwork with Yang Yang. And then the surprised good few episodes portraying strong brotherly relationship between Zhang Bin Bin and Yang Yang were very heart warming.

Live upon the name!!

arranged so well slow progressed, characters strt affection to each other is very defined and not that abrupt. ending is predictable with so many twist and turns but if you watched more of these drama you can guess what will happen next

and the promise made in childhood fulfilled in adulthood this is the main theme of the drama that's why i give it live upon the name THE LONGEST PROMISE!!

the actors put lots of emotions and affection in this you can tell with their work, but the story is like solving the puzzle coz it was about love between master and his pupil like they are attracted with each other without knowing their feelings

its like forbidden love coz they were master and disciple and when he decided to end the curse by killing himself from zhu yan's sword it was very emotional then zhu yan decide to give uo her half live for him by turning the yin yang curse that moment was worth of watching and when shi ying decide to give up on priest hood for her that was amazing

although the ending is not that much fascinating but they when shi ying appeared by the flower leaf when zhu yan decide to leave that was predictable and satisfying that shi ying appeared in front of her not a very happy ending also not sad ending it was good enough for make us smile...

very grateful for actors and directors for the work amazing !!

Quite enjoyable drama

Only know Zhang Yi from this drama as i watched the other drama which he acted as "An Xin' and thought this guy's acting is pretty good and his past dramas should be 'good' as well. Along the way, admired other actors/actress from this show.

The Glorious Era is the crackdown between The Communist and KMT. 1st episode may be confusing with all the rush and hush and with so many unfamiliar faces and names. Subsequently you will get to see them again in following eposides, it has 46 episodes in total.

The drama involves among the good Police, the spies, the traitors, greedy people and also the helplessness. It mainly features the beginning of CCP managing the new China while still cracking down on KMT after the Liberation. KMT is already at the losing end and you can see their belief, loyalty, the struggles, betrayal, helplessness in the name of their party.

The story is not always tense and boring, they do have some cranky and happy/funny moments. I dont find the drama slow, quite a good steady pace in fact. Apart from Zhang Yi's usual rightful character, his brother Zheng Chao San is mature with cool and charming charisma, unfortunate and insecure Zhao Di, good partner Bai Lin, Ginger is older the spicier Duo Ye, 2-sided Zhong Xiang Fang, annoying but good to have him around Qi Lala, innocent and pretty Xiao Dong Xi and all the casts, i think this is relatively a good drama to watch. But of course if you are looking for pretty boys and girls then you will be disappointed as the Glorious Era carries a formal theme with a more matured cast, probably except for Bai Ling and Xiao Dong Xi which also may not be your cup of tea. Overall it is a nice and decent drama.

Simple and Refreshing

I just don't understand why people are hating on this drama for being smooth and not having any kind on twists..... This is a smooth sailing drama.... and I perfectly love it.... if you want twists so badly then I guess this drama is not for you.... try watching some thriller...... This is the perfect blend on Romance and Comedy..... I just love the chemistry of both the leads and everything is going soo perfectly.... I don't want any kind of heart breaks.... breakups etc etc like any other drama.... even if they are included in the upcoming episodes.... I will be okay.... bt seriously..... what kind of twists do you want in this drama.... The storyline is just going straight.... and it is the best for the ones who just finished watching some serious thriller or dark dramas or with many heartbreaks.... I guess then they need something refreshing and this drama serves that....

I personally loved it and will recommend it to the ones who loves RomCom with simple story lines..... The actors did a great job.

Excellent Execution of a K-BL

Gosh, so many Korean BLs are surprising me this year with their quality, their production value, their longevity, and their importance. I won't say all of them have, but the majority of them that I've enjoyed have, and this one is not shy of it. The Eighth Sense is gorgeous, it's truly a beautiful piece of art from the bucket of K-BLs we've gotten this year, and I'm proud of the story it committed to telling and the clear and concise ending to a perfect drama.

Let's Dive In.

Now, because I saw that this series had so much hype and popularity around it, including that it's much more dense and intricate than others, I will be very nit-picky, just an FYI. But I'll start with what I really liked.

The setup of everything was just absolute perfection. What I love most is such a natural introduction of the characters in their natural habitat that doesn't feel awkward or forced. And the chemistry, urgh, the chemistry is breathtaking. I love slow burn, I love tension, I love strangers to friends to lovers. Now this was probably the fastest slow burn I've seen (and a complicated one), but nonetheless, I yearned for them to be together and I got that and that's all I wanted.

I can say without a doubt that all the side characters played an important role in this series and weren't just added-in characters to take up screen time. They helped move the story along, get our leads together, and did so also having their own personal character growth. Aeri, Joonpyo, Yoonwon, and even smaller characters like Bitna were so involved with the overall objective of the show that it all flowed smoothly.

Urgh, again, just so much good chemistry, so much good physical contact, so many beautiful moments. The writers did an incredible job showing the details of their relationship, but did an even better job at diving below surface levels to give our mains actual motives and objectives and obstacles and development. My favorite of them obviously being Jaewon who's so friendly yet facading all of it with hidden trauma that we see him actively working through with the therapist. I immediately loved his portrayal of being the shoulder his friends can lean on and that the surf club can trust, to seeing him in therapy and his eyes weaken and even his posture exhausted. Jihyun is the only one who's able to see through it when they get closer, and you can see Jaewon change and grow with the way he smiles as they interact or make eye contact. And I loved all of it. Down to the very end, actually, especially the end because I definitely needed power bottom Jiyun's energy and he gave just that. (the writers are HELL for giving us that "let's-put-on-our-surfing-suits" scene! the sensuality of it all, like I was literally biting my nails it was so fucking good)

Conan gray music?????? 1000000/10 already. And even besides that, I love the soundtrack in TES. It was hippy and happy-go-lucky and feel-good music, not the typical ballads I'm used to hearing in K-BLs and I loved it.

Okay, so moving on to what I'm choosing to be nit-picky about. Eunji. I get it. She was here to play the evil ex-girlfriend who wants her boyfriend back and will do anything to get him back no matter who she hurts. Okay cool. Except, I didn't hate her, I only felt sorry for her. But my problem with this character is not her actions, but that none of her actions had a genuine motive other than the repetitive ones I'm used to seeing. This K-BL is deep, it's complex, is complicated, and yet they only scrape the surface of her character and I hate it. Really? The only reason she's bitchy is because she wants Jaewon back? It's just too simple for me. I almost wish that Jaewon maybe did something to her, or maybe we see her backstory as to why she tried so hard to get him back, family matters maybe, or something deeper than that. It just looks lazy and tacky to me for her not to have some more complexity to her overall objective. And then try to throw a redemption arc on us? No, thank you.

While I love Jihyun and Jaewon, there is so much from their relationship that showcases it won't last very long and I mean communication. It all starts at the beginning when Jaewon kisses Jihyun on the beach, and then from there on we don't get an explanation as to why or Jihyun never asks, and it's aggravating. They move past it and go through a little conflict, then almost kiss, go through some more complicated feelings, then get intimate on a beach, some more deeper conflict, and boom , it's fixed with a kiss. I wish we heard more from Jaewon, cause we see so much of Jihyun trying, but for Jaweon it is up to him and it's his decision on whether or not to avoid Jihyun or just one day decide he wants Jihyun and runs to him. To me, that's not fair to Jihyun that communication is only gifted through Jaewon's decision. Then they get together and all of the conversations they desperately needed to have were pushed aside for lovey-dovey dialogue. Jihyun doesn't know that Jaewon suffers from depression, which I'm sure he gathered, but I would've loved a conversation with Jaewon explaining it to him. Just the little things that you can detect in a relationship and know that it'll potentially be the couple's downfall.

Something really nit-picky, but in episode 2 or 3, Jaewon and Yoonwon go to a bar and there's a non-Korean bartender who asks Yoonwon her order in English and she answers in Korean, and he looks confused and says, "Sorry?" in which Jaewon had to order for them in English (great English btw). But my problem is that if you're going to work in Korea, especially in a bar/restaurant, then knowing enough to get by seems important. I just hate how confused he looked at someone speaking Korean to him when he works in a Korean bar in Korea.

Ratings:

Story: 8/10 - Amazing. Truly. I was entertained episode by episode, and didn't want to miss a single line of dialogue. some nit-picky things that don't give the overall score of the series higher than an 8 for me, but nonetheless, really really good.

Acting: 9/10 - Really great acting. Some great character depth from Jisub (Jaewon). Jihyun was a tad lackluster going against Jaweon, but still really good.

Music: 10/10 - Conan freaking Gray!! nothing else to say!

Recommendation Value: 7.5/10 - the only reason the score is not high is that this series does have a sense of sadness to it even though it's not a tragedy, so I personally wouldn't recommend it to everybody unless they want something deep and complex and kind of sad. but it's highly recommended for anyone wanting something intricate as it is!
