I started watching this drama because of the cast mainly and i got to tell you it didn't disappoint me at all.

So let me start with the story, well the plot in this drama is one of kind because instead of adding action elements to the political part this drama has added a scientific element and i have to be careful when i say scientific element because in big part of read more the drama it's the main thing.

while the scientific part was brilliant and you can see how much effort the directors and the producers put in it the political part was kind of flat, even boring sometimes but honestly this didn't bother me that much, i still enjoyed the story and the plot plus the comedy moments in the drama were really funny ^_^.

How about the casting, well as i said before i watched the drama because of the cast and honestly all the actors were great starting with song il gook, kim sang kyung, lee ji hoon and my personal favorite kim do hyun who did a great job as lee chun and made me really like this character a lot.

Going to the music i have to say it was really nothing special, there's no Osts in this drama so don't expect much anyways there were some tracks which i really liked when they were played and overall the musical arrangement was good.

In the end i want to say that i really liked this drama, it wasn't perfect or epic but it was really fun and amusing to watch.

This was a fascinating drama about a great scientist of Joseon ~ Jang Yeong Shil ^^ Everything he did had to do with the stars and how our planet works, it was a awe inspiring journey through history.^^ I enjoyed watching him come up with new and exciting ideas for things I personally could never come up with - and they ways those ideas came to him was a wonder in and read more of itself XD [A leaf, a persimmon, a chime, and rolling iron weights to name a few]. I'm always so impressed with people who can think outside the box in almost miraculous ways like this. I am in no way an astrology major or anything close lol, I barely know about the "big dipper" lol XD Any dramas though where the characters are fascinated about the stars - always ends up peaking my curiosity and I end up looking at the stars more often myself ;)

Cast: Jang Yeong Shil (Song Il Guk) *I was so excited that SIG was going to be in a drama again!!!* I loved his character, his beliefs never wavered, and his journey through life wasn't easy - just when he was about to give up on his country, he gained a King and comrades ^_^ That made him fall in love with his country Joseon - He made up his mind that he would do his best to make it better for the people. (I personally like SIG better with the long hair lol rather than the "bun" he had to sport later in the drama). He played his character perfectly though, as SIG always does :)
Jang Hee Je (Lee Ji Hoon) my second favorite character in this drama ^^ He was run by jealousy and envy - and it was hard for him to see past that most of the time - He wanted to escape it so badly but he usually caved into it. *I want to say more but I'm afraid what I might say might be a spoiler so I'll refrain from saying it* I believed in him, believed that he could change - and I didn't let that hope go ^^ His character in a way was also quite pitiful :'(
Then we have King Sejong <3 Love this King <3 He was portrayed by Kim Sang Kyung (Who also plays King Sejong in 'The Great King Sejong' drama) I really liked the Sejong that was portrayed through this actor - he did a magnificent job! Through all his encouragement of Science and creating Hangul - He was truly a wonderful King.
Other characters I enjoyed: Ju Bu Ryung *she's so pretty & I loved her personality*, Lee Chun *at first I thought he was mean but after a few episodes I started to really like this character*, and King Taejeong - I was impressed with his role as well *can't wait to see him again in GKS* :)

Music: ... I honestly don't remember any songs... but all the background instrumentals that I faintly remember were nice and well suited.

Re-watch? Yes, I would re-watch this drama, but none too soon ;) and I recommend it to Saeguk lovers, Song Il Guk/Lee Je Hoon lovers and Science/Astrology lovers alike ^^

The only flaw of the drama (according to my taste) was Princess So Hyun - I didn't like her at all - or the romance they tried to push for - even if it was very sidelined to the rest of the story. I could have done without her.

Both are about sons of noble from a lowborn mother who will rise above barriers of social class, nepotism, scheming etc to do exceptional things in their field at their time and place. Political drama, jealousy, friendships, and underdog are major themes, YoungShil deals with astronomy and science while HurJun deals with medicine

Both are happening in the same time frame. In both Kim Sang Kyung and Kim Yeong Cheol are playing the same characters, Kim Sang Kyung plays king Sejong and Kim Yeong Cheol - king Taejong. In The Great King Sejong Jang Yeong Sil is an important supporting character, while in Jang Yeong Sil he is the main character.

this drama reminds me so much of professor umbridge "progress for progress's sake must be discouraged.."

If you dig science, you will definitely enjoy this. Jang Yeong Shil was like the galileo slash davinci of Joseon. i did enjoy the part where he create stuff but then he shares the story with King Sejong. They should have added political tag for this since its like 60% politics and the rest is Jang Yeong Shil's life. There's a little to almost no romance here. Was a bit dragging because of political plots, should have been made to 16 episodes. i guess they're trying to stick close to history/facts as much as possible coz i feel that the producers/writers hold back in their creative freedom to add fictional events in Jang Yeong Shil's life that can make the drama more exciting. 7/10 for enjoyment

Im not usually a big fan of these kinds of historical drama, but it was really great the last half of the series. It was cool to know about the era when I never knew the history. wished they had a bit happier ending for the main couple but I know that this was mainly about the science aspect. All in all a good drama

It started out well and was interesting but for some reason I found it really boring. The fact that I don't really know or understand science at all didn't help at all - made me more bored. I'm glad I forced myself to finish this finally. It's interesting for those who are interested in sciences and history but for me it wasn't the best one. I somehow felt the drama was missing "soul" and was really dry. I liked the cast though.

I'm at episode 13 and I'm not sure if I should continue. It's kind of slow.
Now at ep 16. No, not for me.

This drama would have been absolutely perfect if they didn't include that little bit of romance (was more of a side thing - so it doesn't impact the story much) but I didn't like it - It was a "romance" I couldn't believe in and they had no chemistry... but outside of that one very minor fact - I really loved this drama and it was fascinating! It's a very enjoyable drama if you love Saeguk's, Song Il Guk, King Sejong, and learning new things - like Science/astrology and such - If you're in for romance - skip it - but if you are into the others I listed then it's a great watch :D

This is another fantastic saeguk which I absolutely enjoyed until the very end. I have to say that I am biased towards science and astronomy therefore I found it particularly fascinating as I had no idea that Korea had such an amazing past in scientific studies.
The story starts a little slow and it is hard to get past the first introductory episodes but after that it really takes off and it is absolutely fascinating to follow the very contrasted and difficult life of this talented scientist.
I had never seen Song Il Gook before and I thought he was absolutely flawless in his main role so I will keep an eye out for his other projects. This drama is highly recommended to saeguk/science lovers like myself.

Can you tell me some more details, IS this story about politics? why do you love?

well the story does involve some politics but it mostly centers around Jang Yeong Sil and his love for astronomy and science. so far it has been about how he makes his way out of the servant class and becomes a key figure in history for joseon. the politics involved revolve around the king and his love for science and basically his desire to use science to better the lives of the common people. so far it hasn't lost my interest and keeps me eager to watch the next episode

She looks like Yoo In Yeong. She starred in Three Musketeers and A Man Called God. She had a supporting role in Empress Ki.

I noticed her too and liked her a lot - I'm glad she appeared in more than just those 2 episodes though :) I also thought she strongly resembled Yoo In Young - that was more of a reason why I took interest in her ^^ Loved her personality in this drama :) Yoo In Young and her should star in a drama together as sisters sometime lol (but not as rival sisters, but as sisters who love and protect eachother - like a good family drama).

i'm not entirely sure. It kind of gives the slightest impression that there might be a possibility of romance but I dont think it will play a very large role so I wouldn't watch it for the romance. It has a great story line though and it keeps you interested.
