Too Much Angst
Eternal Love is one of the first suggestions for those looking for something similar to Love Between Fairy and Devil. While the two dramas certainly had similar elements, I found Eternal Love to be too dark and depressing. It does have a happy ending (for those that need that reassurance), but at what cost? The characters go through some truly traumatic experiences; the villains are almost mustache twirling obvious; and the pacing of each arc felt drawn out and overwhelming. While I may not have enjoyed the overall plot (or, at least, the way it is told), the acting and OST are top notch. Yang Mi and Mark Chao had some electric chemistry on screen, and their romantic scenes sizzled. Mark Chao, in general, completely impressed me - he played two very different characters in such an effortless and graceful way. I would say give this drama a chance if it sounds interesting you, but be willing to drop it if it doesn't hit you the right way.

I watched the story of Fengjiu and Dijun first, and found this confusing since there are now two different versions of them now. Dijun is also much colder and I like the other version better. However, I just enjoy watching Yehua chasing Bai Qian and getting his heart broken by her ignorant words more than Fengjiu desperately vying for Dijun’s attention. Her case is so pitiful it’s difficult to watch and feel happy, even though there are funny bits. Yehua is much better, as he is a male. I can’t understand why. Both dramas are great though, and don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. It’s just that Eternal love is funnier when Yehua is chasing Bai Qian, and Eternal Love of Dream is funnier when Dijun is being thick skinned and teasing Fengjiu in ways we could never imagine. Lots of great stuff and one character I could do without
Epic fantasy with lots of action, conflict and slow-burn romance. Great characters to power the 58 episodes....with one notable exception.I know some people are fans of the hyper cutsey Dilraba, but she plays the same character and it gets on my nerves. This time, her character seems like a bubbly, selfish doll with the mental age of 13 who wants to get their way no matter what damage it does to others. A-Li is far more mature. To me, no one is cute enough to get away with the selfish stuff she does so I started to roll my eyes whenever her character was on screen. Also, she’s so immature, it’s kind of icky when she’s chasing relentlessly after someone who’s got the gravitas of great grandpa. Ick.
Luckily the main romantic conflict works with a couple of the usual misunderstandings and such.
Also, there is the most adorable child in the story which is just too cute for words.
Overall, I enjoyed the story though it feels a bit more by-the-numbers. Aside from the one big fault (that some people actually like), I liked this one a lot.

Eternal love was not my first chinese historical drama i watched but it still struck me. The main characters were so well complimented with each other it was endearing to see. What i loved the most about this drama was actually the second lead couple. I will not spoil anything about them but while watching them you will just cry and hope that they end up together. Overall the drama had an amazing storyline that let you begging for more. Also there are so many amazing actors in this drama it is just amazing to see.
I will say the drama is long but you will fly through the episodes really just give this drama a chance and you will start begging for a season 2.

Plot vs. Plot Triggers
To start with, the world-building was a little confusing, but it definitely definitely grew on me. I grew to enjoy the different rules, aesthetics, and customs in different Clans — it's sad that we rarely see all of the groups get together because so much of the story is focused on individual characters, but as a backdrop they were still great to see.The characters were plentiful but not confusing (at least not once you got used to them) and I particularly liked the female lead Baiqian, who was a strong female lead both in name and in personality. The relationship with Yehua was also great — a male lead who was so faithful and never wavered is always so satisfying to watch, even though there were some scenes where he was forceful and it made me uncomfortable.
Other than that, there is one thing that really bothered me and that's how the plot points were triggered — always by the cliche backstabbing, jealous, second female lead trying to sabotage the main leads' relationship. I've always been very annoyed by how the misogyny present in the writing of second female leads, and it was so obvious in this drama. It felt like there was an entire magic world and a faction war out there and yet everything was triggered by the pettiness of female characters. There had to be over three of them, and I honestly can't think of many female side characters that were genuinely good and important. I'd rather have the Ghost King or another antagonist be the main plot-driver.
Still, I think this drama played on tropes pretty well — while amnesia and time jumps usually bother me a lot and still sometimes felt convenient or rushed, I understand how both of them were an essential part of the plot and were explained generally well.
